Do opening credits count? If so, Bakshi version.

Edit: turns out the piece I was thinking of is the end credits theme. So definitely Bakshi

The best song in an LotR movie:

Damn it, you're stealing my gimmick.

Though honestly, my #1 song from the Rankin-Bass cartoons is probably this one:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1rsEJgjks7o

I 100% prefer it to the version they used in the live-action movie. Though I'm willing to admit that might be nostalgia. But I mostly just like that it's more melodic and sort of wistful. The live-action one is closer to a dirge (which also fits), but in a way it's like the difference between something once lost but which may once again be found, versus something that's lost and gone forever.

Though my favorite song over all might be this one:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AT18OJEPU9Q

Mainly because I DO feel a ton of nostalgia for that one. That was basically my first introduction to LotR, and I absolutely loved it and watched the crap out of it as a kid. To the point where I can pretty much quote the entire movie from start to finish from memory even today.

I voted for it, but to be perfectly honest Into the West (RotK) is probably the best of the three as a standalone song. The one from Two Towers is closer to incidental music.

I'd love to see those old Hobbit and LotR cartoons.
Are they even legally available anywhere?

I tried YouTube but there were only snippets of them that I could find.

I liked that Smaug scene from the Hobbit 1977. He kinda looked like a cat in that one lol

Looks like The Hobbit (Rankin-Bass) and Lord of the Rings (1978) are on YouTube if you're willing to pay (the Buy or Rent option).

You can buy all three as a DVD set on Amazon for around $60 (though obviously you might not want to commit to that if you don't know if you'd like them, or don't have a DVD player).

No clue if there's anywhere to watch them free online, but if there is, it likely wouldn't be legally.

I saw the Rankin & Bass version of the Return of the King when it originally came out. I was about 7 years old and I recall seeing it with my grandparents. I had really cool grandparents.

I was totally blown away. It was a cartoon, but it was about elves and dwarves and orcs and wizards and magic rings, and it was totally unlike any other cartoon I'd ever seen.

Yeah I refuse to use Amazon so I guess I'm out of luck and I'm not gonna download them either because I want to watch them legally either through physical discs or streaming on Netflix or something.

It would've been nice to have the DVDs/Blurays on my film shelf though.

People always crap on that, but I always thought it was cool.

Of course, people always crap on FMV, and I thought those were cool too. So I've apparently always been a bit more cinematically lenient than some people.

It's fine in moderation.

It can look a little jarring when the characters use really exaggerated motions all the time, though.

Fire and Ice was a fun movie but I found myself giggling at the animation half the time
