Board 8 > Cleveland baseball is changing it's name to "Guardians"

Just gotta say, this name does absolutely nothing for me and I don't know how they got to it.

The name change itself was overdue but it feels like such a bland and uninspired result.

There is a series of statues that are near a bridge entering the city that are referred to as the Guardians of the city or something like that. It's pretty whatever but at least there is a reason.

Yep, most team names are accepted without a moment's thought because they have generations of history.

I thought Golden Knights sounded dumb as shit. Still do, actually, but it's grown on me in only half a decade.

Yeah they're from a time before the name also had to be a brand. They were small local institutions primarily and that is true around the world/Europe too (hence Barcelona just being FC Barcelona, Bayern Munich just literally being the name of the place etc). MK Dons - essentially a rebranding of the club once known as "Wimbledon FC" after they relocated in 2004 - is the only one to follow the more "branded" naming convention that dominates US leagues.

British leagues founded more recently that are more desperate for market share like our basketball and rugby leagues (both types of rugby) use "branded" names like giants, thunder, jets etc.

So a US team doing that would be an interesting kind of throwback I guess

Guardians works for me. Cleveland Spiders would have also been interesting and has deeper history to Cleveland baseball, but some people are freaked out by spiders.

A lot of MLS clubs do the "Euro" style names: NYC FC, Orlando City FC, Nashville SC, CF Montreal, DC United, FC Cincinnati, Toronto FC, Inter Miami CF, Sporting KC, LAFC, Minnesota United FC, Real Salt Lake, Austin FC, FC Dallas. Hmm, 14 of the 27 teams. But that comes from just copying what the bigger/better soccer leagues do.

Real Salt Lake honestly made me laugh every time I saw it for a long time

But yes, MLS does have a big mix of US name-branding and Europe-style "simple" names.

Guardians is a great name, I love it. There's a very tall, very old, very useful, art deco bridge, 50 feet away from the stadium, that has a bunch of old statues on it, called the Guardians of Transportation (as seen in the picture above), so it is a cool meaning. Cooler than the meaning of most team names, anyway.

Spiders would have been good too, because of all the visual baseball stuff you can do with webs and catching things.

I'm from Cleveland and still live here!

I'm from the suburbs and still live in one of them.

I didn't care that the team was called the Indians, and I still don't. The change displeases me because I'm going to have to buy new t-shirts. Much like Slider (the team's mascot), the name will get booed until we all get used to it or get distracted by the mustard and ketchup races.

Aren't they having to change it now specifically because they can't market it? I know not too long ago they were unable to get a trademark or whatever because "Washington Football Team" was deemed too vague.

I can't see a world where anyone besides an extremely small group of mentally deficient people are ACTUALLY offended by the "Cleveland Indians", particularly actual natives. Anecdotally, I remember asking a native friend from university about this exact case and his response is "Who the fuck cares?"

The more that unemployed, low IQ Twitter users bitch and moan about meaningless platitudes, the harder it is to address actual instances of inequality or racism. It's the boy who cried wolf problem, and shit like this just makes things easier for actual racists to get away with shit.
