That actually is a good song, but it's so overplayed everyone is sick of it.

Agreed.

But yes I am also astonished at home much people can listen to the same shit for fucking decades, uninterrupted.

If you're talking Pop/Mainstream, I'd agree.

But there's a lot of really good music out there, in every genre, right now just not getting mainstream airtime.

Theres a big difference between what music sounds like today and what it sounded like a decade ago and so forth. Every decade music evolves. Its not evolving to my liking so my bias of liking the last 40 years of music compared to today isnt a bad thing lol.

Interesting theory I heard about the era individuals consider the "best music" and how it tends to be whatever they were listening to right around the time they lost their virginity, mostly because people tend to hold dear to them the things they saw and heard during what is considered the best years of their lives.

Pop definitely took a big decline. I have been told many times Rock music is still good you just have to find it. Thats not a good thing lol. Anytime someone links me to a modern rock band (my preferred genre) I cant find a new band I enjoy to listen to. Either the singer sound too similar, I dont like their voice, or the instrumentals are similar. Rock music today just sounds so generic to me.

Best years of my life was the 90s and I enjoyed the 00s rock the most growing up. Then I branched out over time and discovered I really enjoyed rock from the 90s, 80s, 70s, and 60s as well.

I feel like it really hasn't evolved much in the past 20 years.

Like, the 70's, 80's, and 90's have a very distinct sound. Even within the genres, you can tell the difference between "70's rock" and "80's rock" and 80's Hip hop" vs "90s hip hop".

I feel like the last 20 years, across all genres, has basically all sounded the same.

No Stairway! Denied!

I know this topic isn't exactly about this, but people who say all new music sucks are ridiculed, rightfully so, while people who say all old music sucks and just calls every band "overrated" don't get the amount of ridicule they deserve. That's lame. Just something I've noticed.

Was watching this guy on youtube describing this Osmonds song called Crazy Horses. He was hyping it up so much saying it's so fucking good comparing it to Zeppelin and shit. I figured this must be good and holy shit it was terrible, so fucking bad. So as with any generation there's good and bad music you just gotta look for it.

False. 2007 metalcore is nothing like 2021 and 50 Cent was not a triplet-feel trap rapper.
If we take like the last ~8-10 years, than yeah it got somewhat stagnant but theres still new genre-defining/bending artist that pop up.

Id say the very mainstream is way worse now though. Theres no way trash like Billie Eyelash, Pop Smoke, Lil Baby, Taylor Swift, Kanye, Migos, Imagine Dragons and 21 Pilots and 5FDP are better than the awesomeness that were MTV videos, nu metal, grunge and post-grunge, Eminem, gangsta rap and cheesy but endearing girl and boy groups and Britneys. And then there was the whole British rave scene and various electronic and industrial movements.

It definitely looks like modern music is less complicated and sameish with more vicious marketing practices and ways of targeting people than music of the past.

I'm not sure what popular artists forgo these methods either.

Then again it seems like the arts have been on a general decline for the last 200-300 years since the days of Mozart and chopin. How many famous artists have there been in any field that are that level of famous with that amount of talent and or skill?

As someone who mainly likes 90's-early 00's music, saying there's no good music nowadays is insane. There is lots of great music out there, but at the same time, thanks to the internet, there has never been more shitty music out there before. At least back before the internet was popular, most music got filtered through several layers before hitting the broader market. Nowadays, any untalented shithead can dump garbage out onto soundcloud and youtube and have it available to the general public.

I'm not saying they're doing it intentionally, I'm just saying they can't tell and it'll happen whether you like it or not. Do you think all the good old classics are songs that were instantly considered a masterpiece when they were first written? A lot of older songs that were very big/praised back in the day are totally forgotten now and there's no reason the same won't happen again, leaving the actual good songs with real staying power to be remembered in a few decades

Yeah, I'm still surprised how many classic rock radio stations are still around. It was old when I was a kid, and now that music is around 60 years old but it still hangs around. I dknt remember hearing 1930's music stations in every city in the 90s.
I'm sure the big reason is that the majority of people have switched to some type of streaming service, leaving behind 60 year old farts to listen to classic rock on the FM dial
