I was watching a Youtube channel I like playing it and it seems REALLY overwhelming. There's so much going on in that UI it seems like.

I think I have that from PS+.

Like 98% of those games, I've never played it, though.

When I hear my friends talk about stuff that happens in that game I think they're just making shit up and trolling me. No way a game is that fucking obtuse and micromanagable. But I guess it is lol

My impression of the game is that you can create a society of psychopaths who run the engine of their life on blood and human suffering.

It's really not that complex. You set colonist jobs and then just kind of let the game play itself. Minor micromanagement required during combat but even then it's extremely simple.

Fucking fantastic game. It's a "story generator" unlike any other.

I'm not super familiar with Dwarf Fortress so I can't say for sure but having odd story-focused things happen, like your colonists carving a statue to commemorate one of them getting bitten in the nuts by a rabid squirrel, isn't unusual.

Yea I've played it a lot, but it gets really hard on the default settings IMO.
Here's a video with simplified info for how to start the game and the basics. It doesn't go too in depth into anything so it shouldn't be too much

Dwarf fortress is more complex, in terms of features and controls.

Rimworld is like a more approachable DF-lite.

I have hundreds of hours in both if anyone has more direct questions.

Rimworld also has one of the most insane modding communities I've ever seen. Makes for an almost endless amount of content, it's ridiculous

Me and my girlfriend put about 500 hours into Rimworld during lockdown.

Once you realise that most of the micro-management doesn't matter, it becomes relatively simple. A lot of the detail is just there for flavour, not that there's anything wrong with that.

This is a feature lifted directly from DF basically. DF simulates hundreds/thousands of years of history before a world starts. This gives genuine rises/falls of empires, heroes, monsters etc. Legendary named monsters were normal mobs but obtain enough kills to become legends, basically. It's nuts.

Dwarfs use that for inspiration but anything your fort or dwarves do is also added to the world's history.

Also there used to be a fun bug with carvings/statues: http://dwarffortresswiki.org/index.php/Planepacked#Creation_Details
