Do you think the University should have accepted her "exemption"?

18 y/o Olivia Sandor, an incoming college freshman was DENIED admission to her dream school and lost 200,000 smackers in SCHOLARSHIPS because she REFUSED to get vaccinated due to a "pre-existing" medical condition!!

Her dream school was Brigham Young University-Hawaii and was denied fall admission due to state and college requirements despite the fact that they already awarded hundreds of thousands of scholarships

She has Guillain-Barre Syndrome and went on her friendly network, Fox News and spoke to Sean Hannity to explain how she got an exemption from the school's vaccination requirement after her team of medical providers advised her against getting the shot but the school denied her exemption and told her to re-enroll when she is vaccinated

She got GBS after getting the "influenza" vaccine in 2019 and was paralyzed from the waist down for over a month

BYUH was her dream and the risks associated with covid does not outweigh the reward as she does not want to relapse and isn't worth it to her

Turning Point USA released the letter that said "Because of her medical history, i believe a COVID vaccine or other influenza vaccine will endanger her health and possibly her life and that she should avoid ALL vaccines indefinitely",

But it was met with denial at the university and said "After careful consideration of your request for a medical exemption, we regret that we cannot accomodate your request. Due to our unique location, diverse student population and daily interaction with international tourists at the Polynesian Culture Centre, we must take extra precaution to protect our campus and community"

They said she should consider attending agian when vaccinated or attend another church university

Now she doesn't know what she's gonna do without college as all her scholarships are gone and doesn't know what to do next

GBS is very rare and serious condition that affects the nerves and is thought to be caused by the immune system where it attacks the body's nerves rather than infections some COVID-19 is not one of those that triggers it according to Dr. Nicole Saphier

The CDC does not include GBS as a precaution for vaccination and said those who previously had it may receive the vaccine as no cases reported from those who have had it has had any interactions except for those with the Johnson and Johnson shots but she is one of the high risk groups who should be vaccinated.

But she still refuses and said "Despite what the internet says, i truly believe vaccines are not meant for me and if you feel that it's necessary for you to get vaccinated, then by all means, i have nothing against you but i do not feel that those with medical exemptions should be punished and you cannot force me to take this to attend university"

Do you think they were right to deny her?

It's certainly a weird situation. I don't think there is any definitive link between vaccines & gbs, so I can understand the school's stance, but at the same time if I took a vaccine, then got gbs after I would certainly be wary of vaccines. Regardless, she should've researched other schools before this. Bureaucracies tend to heavily weighted to the word "No" when usual circumstances arise. Losing out on that much money seems like a waste.

idk, I hope they'll at least honor it next year or the year after when COVID fears have somewhat subsided... although, honestly, I think we're in for 5+ years of COVID-related nonsense.

Getting an extremely rare side effect to a completely different vaccine is not grounds for medical exemption. This chick is off her rocker if that's her claim. What about all the other vaccines she was probably required to receive throughout her life for school? Or was there a "medical exemption" for those too?

I'd absolutely be wary of vaccines too if I had a complication with one I had received in the past but it's a stretch to turn basically turn fear into a medical exemption.

It was recommended by her doctors that she avoid all vaccines in the future. So yea, there are justified grounds for her exemption.

Didn't see this part, but you're right. There is a doctor's written notice that she should avoid vaccines in the future. I'm not sure if universities are within their right to legally deny admission for medical exemptions like this, but they are a private university.

It should be noted that while getting a flu vaccine is associated with triggering GBS, having the flu is an even more likely trigger for GBS. For the COVID vaccine, there is an association but no causal relationship with GBS (for the J&J vaccine only, the Pfizer and Moderna vaccines have so far not been associated with GBS at all).

blu posted...

I'd also be wary of taking the vaccine. But I probably wouldn't go out of my way to get a medical exemption. If that was my only episode of having GBS and there hasn't been any associated instances of GBS with the COVID vaccine, I would consider getting it. But I also have the privilege of being in the medical profession and understanding these illnesses (and firsthand being involved in treatment of patients with GBS), so I can understand why an 18 year old would be worried about getting it.

Previously having GBS isn't a reason for avoiding the covid vaccine. If anything, she should know the damage GBS causes, and be first in line for the vaccine because a viral infection (such as covid) incurs orders of magnitude greater risk of GBS than the flu vaccine. Last I checked there have been no GBS cases attributed to the covid MRNA vaccines in clinical trials.

You understand that a number of people who are for vaccines, but even questioned it, have lost their job, right? If I had to bootlick to not make my years of schooling a waste, I probably would, too.

On a world scale, really it just comes from the top couple of doctors. And at any rate, even the official numbers dont make flattening the economy worth it. And yeah, I do care about people, but I also care about myself and my family, and dont want to see them in hardship because of others. Thats how I weigh it.

Unmasked hordes of BLM supporters aside -- who government didn't have the balls to ask to mask (probably because they'd seen BLM scare the police out of a police station which they burned to the ground) -- the guidelines were pretty well-enforced and most people seemed to follow them. That's why the exceptions made headlines, like when Pelosi decided to unmask.
