Netherlands returns to the top 10 while Italy drops out. A huge day for China where they won 9 medals, including 4 golds. They are now one medal behind the United States for total medals. The United States are now down 5 gold medals against China. Russia and Great Britain also had a good day winning six medals each.

Germany fell out of the top 10 and was replaced by New Zealand. Italy is now up to 24 medals, but only has 2 golds. Both China and France won six medals today. China has caught up to the United States in terms of total medals, but with athletics starting up it will be difficult for them to keep pace. China currently holds a 5 gold medal lead over the United States.

Huh...I think the exact opposite. When I think of the winter sports, it's a lot of time trial like events such as skiing where it's very tough to gauge who's doing better/worse. With the summer sports you get the direct competition of swimming and track where it's a lot easier to get excited.

Canada in general skews a bit more favourably towards the Winter Olypmics than Summer Olypmics but overall still prefers Summer. Although, that's largely carried by the older generation, since below aged 40 or so Winter is slightly more popular.

Winter ones are awesome (I actually just discovered them like 10 years ago, lol), but considering how much more varied the Summer ones are in terms of disciplines, categories, countries, and number of athletes, as well as overall attention and coverage from every corner of the planet (and not only from the north hemisphere), + reporters meeting tourists and showing off the lifestyle and curiosities of each host country... The Summer ones are just my favorite sport event out of any other one, because it gathers almost all of them at once.

Italy enters the top 10 while New Zealand falls out. Massive day for the United States as they won 13 medals including four golds. Australia made the most of their four medals with all of them being gold, allowing them to move up to fourth, but with swimming ending they may struggle to keep up with Russia and Great Britain.

So it's not only a national thing here, huh?

My family and I used to joke a lot about that exact same thing TV coverage is usually so poor that they just show beach volleyball whenever there aren't huge events taking place live (Swimming, Athletics, Gimnastics, Diving, etc.). And the worst thing is that they are often plain replays. Maybe it's just a fairly attractive sport that doesn't cost as much money as other events, idk.

It hasn't been an issue anymore for us, though, since we've all been watching multiple disciplines live through a YouTube channel called Marca Claro. It has covered pretty much every event live (except for Skeet and Shooting... but oh well).

In Rio 2016, we had a very nice coverage as well through Fox Sports.

Fun question.

There's around 13,000 athletes across all disciplines (50 total). If every discipline had only one category and 3 individual winners, the minimum would be 150 medals. Multiply them by Male and Female competitors, it's 300. But most of the disciplines have multiple categories, somewhat around, say, 6-10 average; I think Swimming has the most (35), so the average can wildly vary. Lastly, around half of them are individual, while the other half is comprised by teams of 2, 3, 4, sometimes 6, a few of them 7/8, and lastly a few big teams of around 11.

Ooph...

I'm gonna make a wild guess and say:

350=150 (individual medals)
1502=300 (individual male & female)
3006=1,800 (total individual medals across all disciplines, average)

(3002)1 + (3003)2 + (3004)2 + (300[7+8+11]3)1 = 4,250 (total teams medals across all disciplines, average)

1,800+4,250=6,050 (total medals)

Let's see how far off that number actually is.

Germany enters the top 10 while Italy drops out. China had a big medal haul today with 11 medals, including 5 gold. They now lead the United States by 7 golds and are only 2 back in terms of total medals.

Currently 80 nations have at least one medal, we are 7 away from the record set in 2008. Additionally, 57 have won at least one gold medal and we are currently 2 away from that record set in 2016.

So as Greece we have now 3 medals, 2 of them are gold and one is Bronze. Nice for us of course. But here is the thing. When the winner of the Long Jump who is one of the 2 Greek Gold Medals entered the stadium he did a movie that everybody thought was something of the Sumo wrestling.

BUT when I watched it again it remimded me of something else but I thought no way. BUT when aftter the event he spoke of what that move was I was correct. That move he did is the one that Luffy from One Piece does when he uses his 2nd Gear upgrade mode! Damn! Now that is awesome!

@Maniac64 Do you knojw what I hate? I have found some videos BUT not on Youtube. On another site which I don't get it and it is called Glomex? Strange. guess they haven't put anything there? If you want seach Long Jump Intro and you will see the Athletes coming out after their names are announced. You will see our guy under the Greek Flag. Or at least they put someting on Youtube.

Hockey > basketball/soccer
Speed skating/skiing > track and field
Snowboarding > skateboarding

Curling is terrific. Hockey is strictly superior to soccer. Not sure I agree with the other stuff though. Too many winter races arent run against competitors. Speed skating is cool though.

My mother and I really laughed when we saw Curling for the first time, because it showed a replay of a player slowly moving the thingy towards the board (or whatever it's called) and then immediately drinking Gatorade. Such an extreme sport, lol.

Speaking of which, it almost physically hurt me seeing the Swedish guy missing what could have been at least a Silver medal by doing such an extraordinary final jump but not counting by a mere centimeter. I don't know how far he jumped, but it looked even farther than the Greek.

Curling is great. I learned to play and was part of a league for a year, much tougher than I expected and sweeping is an awesome cardio workout.

No one fell off the top 10 today. United States won nine medals while Great Britain won eight medals. The United States extended its total medal lead to four while China extended its gold medal lead to eight. Japan picked up two more gold medals which greatly increases their chance at finishing third on the table.

South Korea drops out of the top 10 while Italy enters it. United States won six medals, but only one gold while China won a single silver medal. They now hold a nine total medal lead while China holds a seven gold medal lead. Great Britain jumps up to fourth thanks to winning two gold medals, but Japan countered with two golds of their own so it looks really good for them to hold onto third.

With fewer than 100 events remaining lets take a closer look between China and the United States and see the chance of the latter catching up to the former. Currently, China holds a seven gold medal lead. Lets go sport by sport and see who still has chances at winning gold medals.

Artistic Swimming (1 event remaining)
While China is very likely to get a medal, it wont be gold unless something happens to the Russian team.
Medal Chances: No golds

Athletics (24 events remaining)
A quarter of the remaining events belong to athletics. The United States hasnt gotten the greatest start, but if they are going to top the medal table, theyll need to win a number of golds in the second half of the event. United States still has gold medal chances remaining in mens 400m, mens 110m hurdles, mens 4x100m relay, mens 4x400m relay, mens shot put, womens 400m, womens 4x100m relay, womens 4x400m relay, womens high jump and womens pole vault. China isnt as strong in athletics with its best chances being in the mens 20km walk and womens 20km walk.
Medal Chances: United States 10 golds, China 2 golds

Baseball/Softball (1 event remaining)
Baseball has a weird format, but the United States lost to Japan in the tenth inning earlier. Theyll need to defeat South Korea before facing off against Japan. Both will be hard matches, but if the United States wants to finish atop of the medal table it may need this event.
Medal Chances: United States 1 gold

Basketball (2 events remaining)
Both teams from the United States remain. The mens team is a bit suspect after their loss to France earlier in the tournament, but I feel both teams have a great chance at winning gold.
Medal Chances: United States 2 golds

Boxing (10 events remaining)
Of the remaining events, the United States has three boxers with athletes in the mens featherweight and super heavyweight in the finals and one athlete in the mens lightweight semifinals. China has two boxers with one person in the womens welterweight finals and another in the womens middleweight semifinals. Among the five I think the womens middleweight athlete has the best chance for gold, but honestly all of them have a realistic chance for gold.
Medal Chances: United States 3 golds, China 2 golds

Canoeing (8 events remaining)
The United States pretty much only has the womens C1 200m as its only gold medal chance. China is competing in more events and could win medals, but in terms of gold medals I feel only the womens C2 500m would be their best chance.
Medal Chances: China 1 gold, United States 1 gold

Cycling (8 events remaining)
No one has a great chance, but China could grab a womens individual sprint gold to go along with their team gold won earlier.
Medal Chances: China 1 gold

Diving (2 events remaining)
China is on another level in diving. Even if one of their divers mess up the other will likely take its place.
Medal Chances: China 2 golds

Equestrian (1 event remaining)
Both nations are competing in the team jumping event, but based on their individual performance neither team really has a chance for gold.
Medal Chances: No golds

Field Hockey (2 events remaining)
Neither nation can win a medal
Medal Chances: No golds

Football (2 events remaining)
Neither nation can win a gold medal
Medal Chances: No golds

Golf (1 event remaining)
Golf can be quite competitive, but Id give the United States a much better chance at winning gold than China.
Medal Chances: United States 1 gold

Gymnastics (2 events remaining)
Its very unlikely that either nation will win gold in rhythmic gymnastics.
Medal Chances: No golds

Handball (2 events remaining)
Neither nation can win a medal
Medal Chances: No golds

Karate (8 events remaining)
One of two sports yet to have started. China has two athletes while the United States has four. However, both of Chinas athletes have a good chance at winning gold while for the United States I can see them medaling, but winning gold is a tall ask for any athlete. Given the nature of the sport Ill give the United States one gold medal chance just because they have so many chances.
Medal Chances: China 2 golds, United States 1 gold

Modern Pentathlon (2 events remaining)
The other sport which hasnt started yet. Nether nation has a chance at winning gold.
Medal Chances: No golds

Skateboarding (1 event remaining)
The United States has a good chance at winning gold in mens park which will hopefully make up for a relatively poor performance in skateboarding.
Medal Chances: United States 1 gold

Sport Climbing (2 events remaining)
The United States has athletes in both finals, but it will be quite unlikely for either of them to win gold, though a medal is possible.
Medal Chances: No golds

Swimming (1 event remaining)
Just the 10km mens open water race remaining. Technically the United States has a better chance at winning gold because China isnt competing, but it would be a hard gold to win.
Medal Chances: No golds

Table Tennis (2 events remaining)
China is a huge favourite to win both team events, along with diving these are Chinas most likely gold medals out of the remaining events.
Medal Chances: China 2 golds

Volleyball (4 events remaining)
The United States still has teams in the womens indoor and womens beach volleyball events. Both have a good chance at winning gold.
Medal Chances: United States 2 golds

Water Polo (2 events remaining)
The United States are the two time defending gold medalists in the womens event and have a good chance at winning a third.
Medal Chances: United States 1 gold

Wrestling (9 events remaining)
China has eligible athletes remaining in three events while the United States has eligible athletes remaining in five events. While China has medal chances in all three events, it would be quite difficult for them to win gold. The United States on the other hand has more serious chances. As I did for karate, Ill give China one gold medal chance due to having a number of smaller chances while the United States could benefit from two golds.
Medal Chances: United States 2 golds, China 1 gold

Overall
Based on what I listed above, the United States still has 25 gold medal chances compared with Chinas 13, which gives the United States an overall five-gold lead. The caveat is that Chinas fewer chances are more likely to happen than the United States, especially in athletics where the gold medal is quite competitive in the remaining events.
