Been watching lots of events. Love when unexpected countries win things and we have already had a couple great ones.

Ecuador winning the Road Race and Tunisia getting a gold in swimming!

NBC just cut the final like 20 minutes of Skateboarding Final for a 5 hour Women's road race.
What the eff. They showed all of the pleminary stuff and all of the final up until this point.

Also, USA Skateboarders kinda choked at the end, one did medal though. However the guy who wins 57% of the tournaments he enters and has been winning since he was 10 choked HARD.

Canada's silver over USA in the women's 4x100 freestyle relay yesterday was so fun to watch. Australia was untouchable for the gold but the battle for silver was pretty intense.

Big day in the pool for the United States where they won six medals. This allowed them to shoot up to third (second by total medals).

Canada also got on the board with two silver medals

Yeah it was fun to watch but the top guy definitely disappointed.

Oh jeeze, I just realized ROC is the Russian athletes. I've been thinking it was Taiwan (Republic of China) for the past couple of days. I know they're Chinese Taipei, but I just figured they'd changed it again.

I saw Skateboarding for women. Not only were 2 out of 3 tries falls which seems strange for me BUT 7 out of 8 athletes were under 18 and half of them were 13. The only adult was a 34 years old American woman who ended in the 4th position. I know Skateboarding is for youngsters but damn it! 34 is considered grandpa there it seems!

Hungary and Tunisia fall off while Great Britain and Kosovo moved into the top 10. China had the biggest medal haul, but none of them gold including missed opportunities in diving, table tennis and weightlifting. Japan leads the medal table with 8 gold medals.

The United States was always the big favourite to win the most medals, but China did have a slight chance in the gold medal department. Today did not help their case. Lucky for them the United States isn't dominating the pool as much as they would like to and if they struggle in gymnastics like they did in the qualification round then that could give China the wiggle room they needed

Kosovo and Italy drop out of the top 10 while Canada and Germany enter. Italy has won 12 medals, but with only one gold they are unable to crack the top 10.

Japan is making the most out of their medal opportunities winning gold in 10/18 events. The United States lost two great opportunities for gold in women's artistic gymnastics and women's softball while China made the most out of their opportunities today as all three of their medals ended up being gold

All eight of Canada's medals so far are from the women, they're doing so great.

Most of Canada's chances (probably almost 75%) are in women's events. It also doesn't help that none of the men favourites have competed yet (just a few who had outside chances)

No talk about Simone Biles dropping out due to mental health issues? That seems to be the big sports news of the day.

Yeah, I slept through that and was shocked to see Russia with the gold medal. After looking into it, Biles withdrew after the first rotation. Hopefully she can recover to compete, but I think she might be done. There has been tremendous pressure put on her by the federation partially due to the lack of depth (relatively) the United States is experiencing for both the men and women.

A rough way to retire but she can probably get a book and speaking/advocacy tours out of it.

Technically she could still go on Thursday for the individual finals but it'd be a pretty shitty look to step away for the team meet and then be fine to go for the individuals. My guess is that she declines in the next 24-36 hours in order to give one of her teammates the ability to step into her spot.

If she withdraws then the spot for the final goes to the next highest ranked athlete. So the United States would only retain the spot in the individual all-around and the vault, though if Biles decides to take on a reduced schedule I suspect she will compete in the vault.

It's funny, yesterday NBC showed an interview with Biles where she was saying how at 24 she's "old", doesn't recover as quickly and thinks more about the consequences and injury potential of what she's doing.

I don't think that's a great mindset to have for someone at the top of their sport, even though I understand and agree with everything she said. You've got to be single minded and a bit ruthless at the pinnacle because the margins are so razor thin.

NBC did a piece on the U.S. Men's backstroke swimmer (sorry, don't remember his name). He got this letter from some of the older gold medal backstrokers, who were telling him that while medals are great it's about enjoying the experience, friendships you make, etc. Naturally right after that he went out and "only" got the bronze, breaking the U.S. streak of winning every gold since 1992 in that event.

I thought after that piece, "with a mindset of not getting gold is okay, he's not going to win". And so verily it did come to pass. The acceptance of failure (relatively speaking...) as an option is the death knell of an athlete.

The United States would have won the last Olympics without a single swimming medal. Though yeah, the United States greatly benefits from the fact that they are the best at the two sports with the most medals.

I mean she is still the greatest gymnast ever. She had a "bad" day in the prelims and was still the all around highest scoring gymnast.

As people have been saying it was Biles vs herself and turns out she couldn't beat her own mind this time.

Canada drops out of the top 10 while the Netherlands has entered it. Italy currently has 15 medals, but only 1 gold.

Japan continues to make the most out of their medal chances winning three more golds. Struggles in the pool and Biles most likely out in gymnastics along with medals being awarded in badminton and table tennis probably means the United States won't get a chance to lead the gold medal count until the second week at the earliest.

Not the best example (Obviously everyone would just trade in 1 medal if it meant the rest turn Gold).

Imagine 55 Total Medals but most are Bronze and only 1 or 2 of them are Gold, compared to 22 Medals, 12 of which are Gold.

Personally, I'd prefer a system that counts all medals but that weights the better medals higher. A lot of the sports world tends to have a "winner take all" mentality, but I wish people celebrated 2nd and 3rd best more often, because most of the time, that's a really huge accomplishment.

I feel like a bronze is closer to a silver than a silver is to gold. I'd probably say 3-2-1.5 or something like that.

when I watch, I tend to root for a medal. Gold is obviously great but there's just a huge difference between competing and getting a medal.

As a non-American I'm happy whenever my country performs better than usual or surprises at disciplines it doesn't normally medal at.

So I'm p happy seeing Japan even doing this well, outside of men's gymnastics how often are the Japanese seen as world class athletes? It's only occasionally and nowhere near the number you see from other powerhouse nations.

More often than not Japan is up there. They aren't USA/China/Russia tier, but usually hang around the other top 10 nations.

I mean we have seen people crying from joy or cheering in excitement because they won a silver medal at these olympics so that is certainly not always the case.

Silver does have that weird case in direct competitions (tennis, badminton, etc) where you get the medal immediately after losing. You win the gold and the bronze, but you lost so you get the silver.

Thanks to picking up their second gold, Italy has broken into the top 10, replacing the Netherlands. China has equaled Japan's gold medal haul to take over the top spot. The United States has extended its total medal lead to 7.
