I'm waiting for Mario or Godzilla to make an appearance.
Or Link to come out fighting human sized Corona virus particles.

But I'm being informed (by my Japanese wife) that Nintendo have a bad relationship with the promoters and won't be a part of it.

That's disappointing if true...

I checked the rosters of each country. I know USA is good and all but over 600 people? Not even Japan that is hosting the event has these many people! Man USA's athletic systems have to be really good. Impressive.

What's also interesting is that that 613 doesn't even include American territories like Guam, American Samoa, and Puerto Rico. I don't know if funding is the same though, but I'd imagine it's still higher than a similarly sized country.

I get the feelings that Americans take athletics much more seriously from a young age than do most other countries. I know Japan is crazy about high school baseball, and I presume that European and South American kids take up soccer from an early age, but Americans are like that with tons of sports.

Kids (usually ones with means) are encouraged to take up sports like soccer, tennis, swimming, and gymnastics from an extremely young age. Once they progress beyond primary school, they'll enter high schools where the students skilled in football, basketball, soccer, baseball/softball, swimming, track, or wrestling occupy the top spots of the social pecking order. All of these sports have organized teams, leagues, competitive schedules, and funding. Youth athletics are just an ingrained part of American life, and I'd wager that things we just assume to be normal here (like "pep rallies" and "rival schools") might be weird as hell in other countries.

Anyway, you take all that time, effort, and money spent on several different sports, grow it up a few years, and you're left with tons of athletes who'd naturally qualify for the Olympics (without the need for large-scale national organization like you might see with China or Russia).

Not everyone does, but I *vaguely* recall the figure that about a third of American high school students play on at least one organized, competitive sports team (many students play on multiple teams, depending on the season). Considering that the US has the third largest population in the world... that's a ton of people taking athletics and competition seriously from a young age.

Rest assured, we have tons of fat people too. It's a "country of extremes" in many ways.

I think the host nation gets an athlete in each event but there's a limit to the maximum number of athletes you can have in each event.

There's 339 events and some of those are team/doubles so you're probably only guaranteed about 400 spots as the host nation.

I can't be the only person who has zero interest in this year's games. Besides the questionable decision to move forward in the middle of a pandemic in a country with ridiculously sub-par vaccination rates, there's the fact that many athletes could/would not attend the games because of the pandemic. Throw in a little bit of the old IOC idpol getting in the way of athletics and you have what will probably be the biggest tire fire olympics since 1980

They are DESTROYING Japan at Water Polo. Though it's fully expected. USA is going for a 3-peat and Japan is well...new.
Lots of spectators for this bike race, at least some people get to see something...it's nice to see. Neat course through the countryside and now going up Mt Fuji.

I don't think that Americans have any sort of Olympic advantage because of kids playing sports, etc. The reason we win so many medals is because the US is by far the most populous developed country.

We actually *under*perform when taking all that into account. At the last Olympics the US won 3x the medals of Germany and France, despite having ~4x the population of Germany, and ~5x the population of France. Look at any other similar Western country and the US almost always underperforms in the medal comparisons relative to population.

Edit: The US does very well in Athletics and Swimming, which give out the most medals, which makes the underperformance worse if anything, since doing well in those disciplines should theoretically be helping to make up ground.

Haven't thought it by that way. But I guess you are correct. I mean 370 million live in one of the strongest and richest countries. So yeah lot of chances to do stuff.

Some Greeks passed on the next rounds so all are fine by the way. Since we win very few medals every medal is a big deal for us here.

Medal Table (After Day 1)

Rank. Name - G - S - B - Total
1. China - 3 - 0 - 1 - 4
2. Italy - 1 - 1 - 0 - 2
2. Japan - 1 - 1 - 0 - 2
4. South Korea - 1 - 0 - 2 - 3
5. Ecuador - 1 - 0 - 0 - 1
5. Hungary - 1 - 0 - 0 - 1
5. Iran - 1 - 0 - 0 - 1
5. Kosovo - 1 - 0 - 0 - 1
5. Thailand - 1 - 0 - 0 - 1
10. Russia - 0 - 1 - 1 - 2
10. Serbia - 0 - 1 - 1 - 2

Only 11 events on the first day, but China wins three of them. Among the top 10 from last games, there are currently no medals for Australia, Germany, Great Britain or the United States while France has a single bronze. Obviously, things are early with all likely to at least challenge for the top 10 during the games.

I mean this is kinda true but think about if the US was split into, say, 5 different countries. Would you expect those five countries to get more individual medals or fewer? I think youd get more just by virtue of being able to potentially send more people overall to compete. Medals involving team sports could take a hit in that case, theoretically, since talented players might be split up.

Yeah, using a per capita of measuring medals is unfair for large countries because there is an upper limit to how many athletes a nation can send overall (or even in one event)
