Someone explain the point of those long... things... long bones... on the back of the Xenomorph.

And why it has such a ridiculously long head.

And why it even needs that tiny little almost useless retracto-mouth. (even the Queen's couldnt get Ripley)

Xethuminra posted...

Quite simply. Its art. Judging from HRs progressive concept of the monster (in collaboration with Scott) ~ Theyre supposed to be rudimentary wings or perhaps some kind of vent, or phallic symbol. Or just alien *shrugs* The mouth is probably to create fear, and is definitely a phallic symbol. It may have been for impregnation. Think of it like a snake, so perhaps that is how it administers some toxin. Something like that. Theyre a lot like spiders or cockroaches!

Bear in mind this is a creature drawn from an abstract piece of artwork & they didnt offer or I imagine really even conjure a concrete explanation for many of these things in the original. In that way, you could say it can be whatever you want.

Maybe its another baby (Queen) and the current Xeno is just a host for that creature, and the things on its back help form the carapace pod when it dies.

or they may be vestigial arms of the Queen DNA. Queens have more than 2 arms.

another possibility is that it uses it to penetrate armored surfaces in such a way the jaw cannot, like a piston.

Or, more likely is they are vestigial arms of the facehugger DNA

https://news.google.com/articles/CAIiEPLZulFwf8oeudMD9qqWHVgqGQgEKhAIACoHCAowrq6BCzCw9PwCML_YyQY?hl=en-US&gl=US&ceid=US%3Aen
Once in the nest, the original story seems to plant the seeds for a creature we would eventually see in 1997s Alien: Resurrection an albino alien. Instead of the bone-white, alien-human hybrid like we saw in Resurrection, this beast is pure xenomorph and is a carpenter of sorts (yup), with a probe that excretes a resin used to build the Hive that other aliens attempt to evacuate by removing eggs laid by the Queen. Cameron also introduces a caste of alien warrior drones; they are armed with tubules that allow them to bypass the facehugger stage and directly implant chestbursters into reluctant hosts.

The mouth thing I can overlook a bit as just a fear inducing thing for he sake of movie horror. (even though I am not sure how it helps anything, especially food down throat digestion. (lets not even get into how fast they magically grow after bursting from a fully living human that they only rip apart uselessly, or what they are eating between humans... which they often just murder and not eat?)

The long head MIGHT have been useful if the retracto mouth was reasonably longer. But that doesn't seem to be considered.

I still can't really forgive the back spike things. The reason being it totally doesn't look like it helps anything when I have seen cosplay xenos. Looks cumbersome.

It even gets in the way of the long head.

AND, worst of all, it would be totally annoying when climbing through tight shafts to get around a ship or at pesky escaping humans.

I just bothers me :p

My best explanation is that they need those to extrude hive building material? Hives don't construct themselves.

Doesn't quite work for an explanation but ... Long standing pet peeve. Meh.

Eh

I love your idea about the relationship between the mouth & head. Its entirely possible that the head contains larva which the Xenomorph was supposed to have been able to implant, or is otherwise related to its intelligence & ability to communicate with the hive or utilize hyper-sensory functions. I would also imagine that the head produces digestive fluid & acid, while the organs of the thorax are related more closely to supplying energy that powers its superhuman physique.

Another idea is that it has 2 brains. 1 copy of the human host to syphon memories from & learn off of, and another fully formed Xenomorph brain that controls it.

in almost every other depiction of the Alien creature besides the corporate syndication sequels, they have been associated with gods & a godlike intelligence.

On that note, I do stand by what I said.... that the features of the Xenomorph are directly related to the facehugger DNA. The throat-tube became the 2nd mouth, the tail became the tail, and the extra arms of the Spider-like facehugger became the appendages on its back.

In the first Alien, we actually see that it encases the captain in hive material, so thats possibly what the things on its back can do. Exactly. Forming the Queen carapace as I put it.

Another possibility as stated is that they are rudimentary wings & likewise its possible the large head is related to dormant ancestral human DNA which the Xenomorph utilizes. As far as moving through vents, I really dont think thats the Xenomorphs intended environment.... but they could actually be malleable instead of rigid as depicted or its feasible that the Xenomorph could collapse or retract them back inside. Another thing that we dont see from the original film is whether or not the Alien got to its final metamorphosis. I believe several things in Prometheus & Covenant imply that Scott & Giger imagined of it taking newer, higher forms beyond the standard Xenomorph.

another idea

Is that they are for intimidation. Many creatures have large protrusions which they use to scare other animals away.

They could also signify rank & standing to other Xenomorphs

  • Or, in attack/prowling stance, it forms a cage that protects the head & can excrete acid in case someone gets on its back.
  • its possible that the Xenomorph would be able to jettison its back-tubes to crawl in right spaces or simply form without them.
  • I am convinced that Xenomorphs eat metal. Theres nothing else on the ship that it could have used to gain sustenance.

actually, haha, partially inspired by the Thing here.... I love the idea of Xenomorphs violently reducing their body size to get through tight spaces, then regrowing everything once it gets on the other side. That way brings back flashes of the Newborns death. Or even reshaping its body as needed, recalling its bio-mechanical design. So, elongating & stretching itself. Etc. also, the large head may help reduce death by cranial injury if it has an array of duplicate neurons & lobes in case some become damaged.

Id love it if it had a third brain too, located in the thorax, so even if you decapitate the Xenomorph.... it can continue to attack & possibly even reform its head. So, in that way, the things on its back could be a set of secondary sensory organs too.

On the contrary. If you pay close attention in ALIEN. It does slink to a small size to crawl in the vents. Or towards the end before Ripley jettisons it out to space. My headcannon is they have the bones of snakes , no matter the size they can easily slink their way through even the smallest space

also on another note. Giger had a mild phalic obsession in his art. Along with tubes and such. He did after all edit an xray of a bulls penis and use it as a bands album art. Haha

I mean, you know.....

Presumably, the original space jockey & decidedly organic derelict craft are part of the same species as the alien. The tube that runs from the space jockeys face into its chest is extremely similar to that of the aliens design. Also, the derelict vessel resembles the aliens head structure in some ways. So, originally, who knows.....

an adult alien could become a space jockey, and create a goddamn space ship out of bio mass.

Yea

That sounds right.

So. We just summed up the plot for the show. Aliens turning into ships or bio-organic factories to spout more

1 becomes 100000000.

course. Just remembered. In AvP. There was that scene where a lil alien bursts out of a dead one. But idk if thats canon to scottts lore or the EU of things.

Yep

Dark Seed is right up my alley. I am just waiting for the opportune moment to play it. Theres two of them, if I recall correctly.

His art absolutely tells a story, which is very special for just how surreal it really all is. Theres this perfect mixture of familiarity meets alienation, attraction meets repulsion, man meets machine, male meets female, life meeting death, and so on and so forth. Its washed, but sheen. Heavy contrast. Honestly? He may have been the greatest artist of the modern era ~ opening up a door for entire waves of other surrealists to follow, and sort of bridging the gap between fantasy & abstraction a little bit there. What I love to see is his continued fixation on the Xenomorph, Derelict, & Space Jockey archetypes. Thats how most of us were introduced to him and he was correct in sticking to that subject matter. He also seemed to genuinely enjoy it. So, I love that

His art style is iconic. Theres also a game called Scorn coming out either this year or next. Where the art and creature style is mimiced and sort of tribute to giger himself. Usage of tubes and phalic style nodes and what not.

and yes there is two darkseeds. I watched a playthrough of the first one. And i will say this. It was a very enjoyable story. Atmosphere too was top notch. But i wont spoil it. So. Rom it, emulate, pirate, ebay, do something and play it

the best Giger-inspired games that Ive played thus far have been ones involved with Naotoshi Zin
  • Shadow Tower Abyss
  • Kings Field 4: The Ancient City spoilers
  • Dark Souls II requiem for Bloodborne
Just the mixture of alien & occult, the use of females as a theme, obscure bio-machinery, a dark realm, promises of power & warnings of doom, etc ~ They hit those notes perfectly for those games.

Demons Souls had the Giger elements more on the back burner, so I guess their original intention was to return to the Gothic Medieval style from the first Shadow Tower before it became Demons Souls or whatever the story was there.

Miyazaki seems more opted to have collections of fairy tale creatures & mythology, which is leaning back more towards the original intention of their RPGs anyway I think. As opposed to rescaping everything through the lense of Giger & Lovecraft. However.....

It is worth noting that the former/latter is what has proven to really stick with people. Theres always two sides to any story.

I think Tolkien & Jackson would agree.

If we want to really redux this whole thing. We should be modeling after the original Dracula novel free of the proceeding cornerstones, and likewise with the original Frankenstein, going back to Da Vinci & Escher. Gamewise, needs to looked at towards Metroid & Resident Evil trilogy. Those babies are essentially how we go to where were at anyway. Actually I think theyve been doing a pretty darn good job with that, all things considered.

Man

Did you ever play the Aliens RPG back in the day, like with books and dice? It was pretty cool and went into depth about why the aliens look the way they do and how they function--even why their blood is acid (basically, they're body runs similar to an elaborate car battery).

Not at all. Spoilers: The last few levels take place in an alien spaceship (complex? It's been a while) and those levels were literally designed with Giger and it's very obvious from his aesthetic. I mean, you can just look it up--his name is in the credits.

The UAC = Weyland Corps?

I think the games take that link one step further with the inclusion of a malicious engineer/android. On that note, I must admit that I am cheating. If there is a juicy link between Prometheus & Doom ~ at the moment, Im not in a great position to go check on it. :)

Later
