WWHD pretty much completely fixes that issue. Exploration is actually fun in the remake, instead of being a chore like it was in the original, to such an extent that I'd say WWHD is a legitimate contender for "Best 3D Zelda," when I would have said the original was one of the worst.

This game is beautiful. I can't believe how good they were able to make a game from 2003 look back in 2013. The lack of effort they put into remastering Skyward Sword this week is abysmal.

I'm at Windfall Island now. I like how the game doesn't really fuck around much, you constantly feel like you're progressing.

I had forgotten that they also updated the rope swinging controls. They weren't very intuitive on the Gamecube.

I beat Dragon Roost and went back to Windfall Island to get the Swift Sail from the auction. Took like 20 tries for it to even appear in the auction. Managed to get it for 189 rupees which apparently is pretty good.

I'm nearing the third dungeon now. The parts with Link's grandma are weirdly super sad to me, wtf.

I always liked how the music at this part is a remade Jabu Jabu's Belly theme from Ocarina of Time.

I have a Seasons file that I started a few weeks ago. I'm not really feeling it. I used to love that game. Now just little things like the screen scrolling in dungeons (as opposed to stationary like in Link's Awakening) and the terrible music (it's honestly really bad) are putting me off.

I beat the third dungeon and then the Forsaken Fortress.

I've always hated what they did to Tetra. Once she's revealed as Zelda, she loses her aggressive personality and gets relegated as just a damsel in distress. She literally has to sit and wait in the Master Sword chamber alone until Link returns.

I'm still playing it. I just best the Earth Temple.

I did a huge number of sidequests. I have most of the heart pieces in the game as well as a few pieces of the Triforce of Courage.

The Wind Waker can be defined as being a very emotional Zelda. There's a lot of feeling in this game. It's aged fairly well but there's some age showing for sure. I'll try to have it finished in the next day or two.

Beat the Wind Temple. I have made it a priority to not use a guide and I really got stuck looking for the Ghost Ship Chart. To my knowledge, nothing tells you where to go look for it. I found it by searching seemingly everywhere.

Wind Waker definitely is one of the best Zelda games, and the core of its story is one of the greatest strengths. The idea that Hyrule had fallen and was secretly buried beneath the sea is absolutely awesome. I also like that at the end Ganondorf explains that his motive was always revenge for the inequality between Hyrule and the Gerudo Desert coupled with the ignorance or indifference of the Hylians to the plight of the Gerudo. I think they could have built all of that up a bit more, but the game is nearly 20 years old so I need to be fair.

The last few dungeons were a lot weaker than the first three. Dungeon design in general was not a highlight of this game. Exploration was excellent, but I wouldn't have minded a bit more direction with the Ghost Ship Chart, which seemed to be a "just wander around the ocean until you find something that lets you progress". Difficulty was also weirdly imbalanced, I played on Hero Mode and the hardest part was the first dungeon. The first boss is also the hardest dungeon boss in the game, which is further backed up in a near side by side comparison in Ganons Tower when you fight all the bosses again. Puppet Ganon was harder, though.

One element I found interesting is that few characters outside of Dragon Root and Forest Haven even know there's an evil threat to the world. I'm not sure how I feel about that. Link's motivation comes from saving his sister and avenging her, the obligation to save the world is stated but not really SHOWN. As far as the Hylian people in the world are concerned, Link isn't really a hero at all. The Koroks really just see Link as "that guy that went and got Makar out of the Forbidden Woods", he didn't really save them all or anything.

All in all, a great game, as it always has been. Kudos to PotD for recommending it. I might start Twilight Princess next.

Though, comparing it to something like MM, where everyone knows the world's in danger and you get to see people react to it differently (I actually saw an opinion piece likening it to the world's response to Covid, particularly noting the people that deny there's any danger at all), that does offer more depth and room for interesting worldbuilding.

I replayed MM last year and also made a direct connection to COVID. It's almost spot on how people actually reacted to a major traumatic event.

And I see that perspective about people not knowing they're in danger. It's certainly a different approach but I haven't decided if I like it.

Unsurprisingly, the comments mostly amounted to "It's just a video game stop ruining my escapism by reminding me of real-world problems" (with no small amount of irony), but I thought it made some pretty decent points. One of the things I love so much about MM is the ability to explore how the townsfolk react to the apocalypse, and the parallels to what's going on now are hard to deny.

I started Twilight Princess HD. I'm playing on Hero Mode here, too. I've never done this for TP, mainly because they mirrored the world like the Wii version (why).

The Wii version was my original version, but I got the Gamecube version in like 2010 and never played the Wii version again. I'm really going to be backwards playing this.

Graphically it's not as nice as WWHD. The art style for WW lent itself well to an HD remaster. Not so much for TP, but there's definitely an improvement.

Just the 3DS Master Quest. It was normal on the Gamecube. It being flipped made me not bother with it on the 3DS, too.

I'm back in Ordon as a wolf now. I really can't stand these parts. TP has the one of the worst intros of any Zelda.

They would have been a lot better if you actually gained new wolf abilities and stuff as the game progressed. You get a Midna attack not long after where I am, and then that's it.

The fact they shortened the wolf sections in the Wii U version tells me that most people didn't like the wolf parts either.

I've really not been motivated to play this lately, and I'll be taking a pause from it for a while now. I just got to the Goron Mines.

There's a lot of filler in this game compared to WWHD. The motivation to rescue the village kids is decent but I'm not feeling as immersed. The wolf sections are still as bad as ever.

The first dungeon felt notably longer than most WW dungeons, which actually is a good thing. I've always found TP's dungeon design to be its strong suit.

One thing I'm noticing though is the camera controls are really bad. Like the camera doesn't want to do what I want it to. WWHD has great camera controls, I don't know why this one is having issues.
