Been playing through it rather slowly. I just got to chapter 6, while doing as much side questing as possible. I had to advance the story so I could open up a few more sidestories and parts for my slot car racer. I'm finding the humiliation of Nishiki fascinating. He's still the sniveling little bitch of a Yakuza, who's only fit to take his anger and frustration out on women. He obviously matures to the point where he's a cool and confident family man, but no one respects him in the organisation at that time. The fact that they all wish Kiryu were there instead of Nishikiyama, when Nishiki knows that he's the reason Kiryu isn't there, is further salt in the wound. I like it.

Grovel and beg, you little worm. Prove you're worth more than the dirt they rub on your face.

Oh, @CyricZ - Majima is currently inactive for story line reasons. That means he won't crash the party during minigames, yes? I got him to play MesuKing with me once, but that was before I got rank C in Majima Everywhere. I'm assuming that I need him active before he'll start crashing the party in minigames.

I just completed Yui's substory in the Cabaret club. Fucking lmao. I didn't expect to see this softcore shit in a video game.

Okay that's a holdover from 0 and not the norm.

In 0 there were dozens of those videos tied to women in minigames, substories, etc. You viewed them at a video parlor.

The Kiwami hostesses are extras they didn't put in 0.

In most games, once you "complete" the hostess you get the lovey dovey fade out and fade back in with them outside the love hotel.

It's a struggle, because I find them engaging, but the completion is daunting. Things are opened up, but I want to do them as soon as they're opened up despite being horribly underpowered for them. Case in point the coliseum.

Oh the coliseum can be rough depending on the game. For Kiwami, just wait until you unlock the komaki tiger drop then cheese your way through it.

Haven't had too many yet. So far, he just comes out of a nearby alley to ambush me. He appeared behind me at the Smile Burger once, which was pretty good.

Man, karaoke is difficult to siteread when you have to think about where the buttons are, where on the screen the next track is, and how many times you have to press a button in order.

I got really sick of him popping up everywhere once I got to S rank. Hes a pain in the ass, especially in breaker and slugger.

It's more about the character than the story. Rin felt very young and shallow to me, whereas Yui felt a bit more fleshed out and organic. The difference between someone just out of high school and someone who's been out for about 5 years.

Anyways, I just finished chapter 6. They're treating Haruka as a kidnapped person, huh? Technically that's true with Majima's shenanigans, but looks like this 10 billion yen thing goes much higher than the Tojo clan.

Oooh, some more Nishikiyama context. I'd almost forgotten about it. Anothe wakeup call from another patriarch, this time the Shimano dude. I'm very curious to see where Nishikiyama gets his courage from. Will he finally have enough of being compared to Kiryu? He's been in his shadow the entire time.

Yeah I like how they put the flashbacks in there and show the process of him slowly breaking. In the original game Nishiki is just suddenly an asshole after your 10 year prison sentence.

Poor Nishki. They've done a good job of contextualising his fall and rise. Even though he's "an asshole", he still remembers his past.

I'm kind of torn on how you progress from here. 0 and kiwami 2 are the two best games in the series, with kiwami 2 not only being a remake of 2 in the dragon engine, but also being a sort of greatest hits of the series, it takes a lot of the best stuff in the series and thus kind of becomes the essential yakuza game in almost every way. Yet I don't want you to not play the others either, as they're all good.

I plan to go to Yakuza 0 after this. Kiwami is more or less an introduction to the world. They speak of stuff that happened in his past, but I'm okay with that. I like the idea of prequels.

You'll be floored at how alive and bustling Kamurocho feels in 0(and the rest of the games) compared to Kiwami. You'll also notice that the city ends up being a character itself throughout the games. Once I get full control in each game, I always like to run around the city to see what's changed over the years.

That's why kiwami 2 is so, so good, and so much better. Sotenbori and kamurocho feel lively in it, and it feels so seemless when going into buildings and stuff.

I did this exact same thing, loved it. It felt so nostalgic visiting places that had changed over those decades. Was such a strange feeling.

It's pretty good, yeah. Hard to get the timing down, because if I go too soon, it's just a straight kick. If you go too late, he's already staggered, and you can't seem to activate it after the first attack. The guy _really_ needs to telegraph his attack, or you need to be good at anticipating when he'll use it. Beating Komaki by using it felt good, though. Felt like a proper anime fight.

You'll get the timing down eventually. It's fantastic for grinding through the coliseum. It'll end fights so quickly and you'll have fought those guys so much you'll know their attacks.

Still mucking about in chapter 10. Here comes my issue with dissonance with these games. You're supposed to hurry to Shinji and Reina's position, which is heightened by the tense music being played. Instead, I've been bowling, racing slot cars, and drinking a lot. I'm at the point in the story where I just want to complete it before doing anything else, because the story events compel me to do so.

I'm in Chapter 11, about to head to Shangri-La. Mopped up the 2 outstanding substories that I had available and finished off Majima's SSS ranking. I doubt I'm going for the full completion, as I'm getting more enjoyment out of the story than anything else.

Now that I'm done, I have to admit just how much I appreciate the fact that the game is just focused on telling a story and entertaining you. Suspend your disbelief, because you're watching a Hollywood movie. Explosion in the final act right next to a critically injured person, and making no effort to move them? They survive the explosion via magic inscrutable plot barrier to give a final speech before they die from their wounds.

He lives on top of the gate to Tenkaichi St. Little sleeping bag up there.

You mentioned before about the game being weird with urgency in the main plot, but you could still do anything you wanted to. I think that's an artifact of it being a remake of the first game. Future games in the series are better about cutting off your ability to explore when things are serious and urgent.

Also in the first game on PS2, you couldn't explore once you began the final chapter, because it automatically threw you into the big fight leading up to Millennium Tower. It's so weird how you actually have to initiate it and that's when all the bad guys decide to show up.

He has an apartment in kamurocho until the end of yakuza 2/kiwami 2, though you only see it in cutscenes. After 2, his home is the orphanage until 5.
