Kinda feel like I have to side with the city given how much obnoxious shit she did.

Also the random allegation of racism is once again ridiculous. Racism used to mean something, but now it's leveled at any non-POC that a POC (or BiPOC) is in an argument with. I still remember that one black actress accused a cop of arresting her due to racism, the usual professional and amateur racebaiters automatically siding her, and then TMZ or somebody releasing a video showing that she had been doing *exactly* what she was accused of doing (iirc, having sex in her car).

And then one of the professional racebaiters had the gall to suggest that she apologize to his community for faking it, rather than apologizing to the cop she'd slandered and him apologize to the cop he slandered/libeled (especially since iirc the cop's family might have death threats or something)

Other than that, I like concept of different-looking architecture. It's a shame that they can't just zone an area where people can do stupid shit to the exterior of their homes (so long as it's not dangerous) without anybody complaining

Imagine being the previous owners when you realize that someone was actually willing to pay nearly $3,000,000 to live there. The fact it even sold at all is an outright miracle.

The article says it's in an "upmarket neighborhood", which in California means the land itself may be worth a couple million.

Happens all the time in the most expensive parts of California, some areas are so in demand that people will buy house+land then fully bulldoze the older big house just to put up a new one. If they want to live in that area there are 0 empty lots to buy.

Why are her neighbours' property values her responsibility? Provided she's not actually endangering anyone (which she isn't) and is following the zoning laws and all relevant building codes, who is the city to dictate what she does with her own property?

Makes you wonder if the George Floyd incident was actually racist, or if that's just how the world saw it during a particularly stressful year. Maybe that is something that we'll never know, except we seem sure that we do. Either way, the circumstances were enough to change the flow of history.

And the fact that they don't care is why the town has to get involved. If they were reasonable people, it would have been unnecessary.

Getting nostalgic?

For a time when criticizing racism actually meant criticizing racism? Yeah, a little bit. But at the same time it's a sign of how much society has changed that there's no longer enough racism to fight that many people have to try to find or invent trivial matters to offend them. The bigger is just it's become a blanket criticism for ANY interaction between a POC and a non-POC, which is both an issue on a slander/libel level where there's potential harm as well as on a cry-wolf level where actual racism is more likely to be ignored.

The kinda kicker to the George Floyd case is that the same thing almost certainly would have happened to a white man in that situation, but nothing would have happened to the cop and you wouldn't have seen any protests over it. You certainly wouldn't see cities building statues if a white man was killed by Derek Chauvin. Keep in mind that we've seen multiple incidents of unarmed white youths being killed by cops where, even when the cop shoots an unarmed white 20 y/o male in the back who's wearing headphones -- and the whole thing is on bodycam -- the cops were exonerated of all wrongdoing, claiming, "Well, there's stuff you can't see on the bodycam! He knew he was disobeying orders by walking away!" If that same video of a white youth getting shot in the back, then wrestled to the ground, handcuffed, and left to bleed to death on the sidewalk involved a black youth, that city would have torn to pieces.

Because f***ing over your neighborhood is a dick move?

And where do we draw the line there? Should she be sued for painting her house anything other than the three most popular shades of beige, for fear of harming property values? Should she be sued for having anything other than grass growing on her property? For driving a car that might harm the neighbourhood's image? Hell, given the anti-Asian racism running rampant following Covid, one could suggest that the mere fact that she's an Asian-American hurts her neighbours' property values (since there are many people who wouldn't want an Asian neighbour). Should she move out to be considerate of that?

Let people exercise some individuality in decorating their own homes. There are more than enough cookie-cutter suburbs out there governed by totalitarian HOA's for the people that get off on exerting that kind of control over their neighbours' lives. If that's what her neighbours want, they can sell their houses to people that don't hate fun and move to one of them.

Of course, all of this is without pointing out that you're generally quite defensive of people that come under fire for flying swastikas and confederate flags on their houses, citing freedom of expression and whatnot. How interesting that property values don't seem to matter there, yet are of the utmost importance here.
