La La Land
A Knight's Tale
Big Fish
Count of Monte Cristo
Before Sunrise

La La Land is one of my favorites, would pretty much always watch it again. It's been a while for A Knight's Tale so it'd be interesting to revisit that, I liked it at the time. Count of Monte Cristo I've seen a couple times and is solid. Haven't seen Big Fish or Before Sunrise.

La La Land and I think I've seen a few minutes of one of the Before movies, not sure if it was Sunrise. It was very slowburn, a bit slow for me.

Seeing everyone's answers so far it looks like the consensus that everyone has not seen is Big Fish, so I will add that to the list of movies I will keep nominating.

If you're going to nominate Big Fish, I think it's only fair that you also nominate Little Fish.

Also, I'm just learning that Little Fish is actually a movie and I'm interested in watching it.

Inspired by me watching Triangle (and rambling about it in the horror topic) what are movies with exciting concepts and intriguing stories that could be your favorites, but are held back by some aspect, whether it be plotholes or performances or something else?

This is something that I feel like happens for me most with psychological/surreal horror. A few that come to mind include Triangle, Vivarium, Velvet Buzzsaw and Color Out Of Space

Interstellar - Thought it was a surefire 10/10 through the first 80% of the movie. Then the end happened. I should probably watch it again to see if the ending ruins it for me as much on a second viewing but it really soured a movie I otherwise thought was amazing.

The Happening - This is more of an extreme case as I don't really like the movie that much, so there's no one thing that could be changed to make it one of my favorites or even close to being one of them, but damned if I don't love the concept. I don't really like any of the movie/tv versions of Day of the Triffids either which has a similar but not that similar thing going on. Plants just can't catch a break with me.

Melancholia

Bleh, way too artsy for me. I'm sure there's a ton of meaning behind all the symbolism, but I just wasn't interested enough in anything that happened to bother figuring it out. It probably didn't help that the characters were all such jerks that I was actively rooting for the rogue planet to hit Earth faster and kill them. Also, the way the camera never stayed still kind of made me feel a little sick.

5/10

Big Fish

Hadn't seen this one before, but it was nice to be reminded that Tim Burton can actually make good movies when he isn't being way too Tim Burton-y. The father-son conflict felt kind of clichd, but it works well enough as a framing device for the various stories. Pretty much all of those were great, and it was fun trying to figure out what "really" happened. They did a good job making them feel both somewhat believable and completely absurd at the same time.

7/10

i can't really think of an example that fits exactly because it's just minor nitpicks that sometimes keep my 9's from being 10's but i think the closest for me would be Amadeus?

like thematically it's perfect but i would love it a lot more if it wasn't in English lol

when i first saw Oldboy it was a 9 because i really wasn't feeling the hypnosis aspect but it was pointed out to me that it wouldn't really work without it and after rewatching it, i gave it the 10

I'm Thinking Of Ending Things - 7/10

Movie is about as far from what I was expecting as it could've been. I got too far behind so it's been weeks since I saw the trailer or thought about it and I was expecting an awkward comedy about a girl breaking up with a guy. Which I guess was true for about one car rides worth of content. And I loved that car ride, the main characters are just talking to each other for a good fifteen straight minutes and while it got close to that 'too awkward to be enjoyable' level for me it never crossed over the line.

I assume everyone is part of the one characters fantasy/dream built from a life of loneliness? Or maybe he dies at the end sitting in his truck and it's one long version of the 'life flashes before your eyes' idea, and at the end when he walks up on stage he's essentially getting his own, real lifetime achievement award since he's reached the end of it.

It also felt like the movie was designed as needing to be watched more than once to understand entirely what's going on, especially on the smaller scale side of things, which I didn't particularly enjoy. I kept seeing posters or books or movies, and all I could think of was that this probably means something but I'll be damned if I know what it is. Or when they stopped for ice cream and something was supposed to smell like varnish but it wasn't actually varnish. I thought maybe that was tied into him ending things in his truck and he was getting some kind of strange smell from the inside of the cab, armor all or something. I don't know, feels like a stretch.

Melancholia - 6/10

678.

My problem with Melancholia is the same the second time around as it was the first. Like I'm Thinking Of Ending Things, I enjoy one half of the movie far more than the other, but the half I enjoy here is the back half. If I'm only going to like half of a movie and we're splitting it down the middle, I'd much rather enjoy the start and be let down then never really get excited for anything in the first place.

Once Melancholia the planet starts to actually matter in the movie is when I get interested in it, seeing everyone grapple with the impending doom, or Justine having apparently already done so and moved on to acceptance because she knew it was happening. But the first half of the movie... kind of just makes me hate everyone and not care all that much what happens to them in the second half.

Big Fish (2003)

We've all heard a story from someone who is bad at telling a story. You lose interest quickly or are easily distracted. Some people are just naturally better at telling a story. There is a certain art of storytelling. You might know someone who tells A LOT of stories, and after a certain point, you start to wonder that maybe not everything this guy or gal is saying is the truth. How can it be? These stories are so farfetched and ridiculous. Entertaining, but absolutely ridiculous. That is the theme of this movie. A son gets tired of hearing his father tell these fantastical stories, over and over, and begins to not believe in them anymore. Big Fish has the same model of storytelling as Forrest Gump. And while I think Gump might be the better overall film, Big Fish tugs on my heartstrings way harder. I've probably seen this movie at least 10 times. And every time I cry. Even after this recent viewing. One of my favorite movies of all time.

10/10

Big Fish: 8/10

When I read the description, I didn't really think I would like it but dang it kept me interested. I loved the different stories with Edward, and the film did a great job tugging the emotions interspersed with the more lighthearted tone.

It was really neat to see all the people who were from the stories, albeit normalized, show up at the end for the funeral.

I was initially interested because it was Arthurian related but unlike 95% of Arthurian related things it had yet to prove itself to be bad. Then the trailer won me over.

Not sure if I'd go to see it in the theater or not, I don't really like the experience so something has to be 10/10 on the need to see scale to get me in one, but even if I wanted to I seriously doubt my local theater would get it.
