I'm Thinking of Ending Things

Full disclosure: I actually watched this one about a month ago. I was going to rewatch it for this, but I'm too busy with other stuff this week.

Luckily(?) I was already spoiled beforehand anyway, so at least I don't have to worry about not noticing all the foreshadowing. As far as I can tell, just about everything that happens is the old janitor fantasizing about how his life could have gone better? And also he's trying to decide if he should kill himself? Most of the movie seems to follows dream logic, which kind of made it hard for me to care much about what was happening. (It'd probably be different if I hadn't already known the girl wasn't real but that spoiler made it obvious that none of this was "real".) I do like the ideas, it'sjust hard to love a movie when you don't care about any of the characters. One thing I do love: Assuming Jake is the janitor's idealized version of his younger self, it's interesting that he's kind of a jerk whose girlfriend doesn't seem to like him much. It says a lot that even his perfect fantasy self is a screw-up.

8/10

Seen Escape and Melancholia, though I was tempted to leave Escape on here since I haven't seen it in about 25 years would be my guess. But, I'd still mostly rather watch the new ones.

I watched it around the same time as Another Earth and Coherence. I always get them mixed up with each other and can never remember which ones are which on name alone.

It probably doesn't help that I thought they were all kind of average.

every so often i cut stuff from my watchlist but do keep that list in a different sheet of a spreadsheet so i have a primary watchlist and secondary "true" watchlist which i've told myself i'm fine with never getting to as a coping mechanism

so my primary watchlist is at 88 right now and my secondary at 101. actually made a huge dent in that last year during quarantine

It started as a text file but I eventually bookmarked everything on a torrent site Gamefaqs may or may not want me to use the name of. I still keep track of everything in a text file though, because I've been doing that with things since the 90s and I can't see myself ever changing.

hmmm i'm not sure whether bookmarking the pages for me would end up with me watching less or more. it's right there when the mood hits but it would just be more stuff to organize that i wouldn't want to spend the time doing

i think i actually started with a word doc and then the watchlist feature on some sites but excel spreadsheet has been my go-to for everything for a while now

Melancholia - 9/10

The opening sequence is striking. Depression or a similar mental illness can certainly feel apocalyptic at times, so I like the metaphor, and cosmic sci-fi is just a cool backdrop for the main story.

Justine's wedding is nightmarish, not just because it's painfully awkward, but also from the passage of time and everyone's behavior seeming slightly off. Everything that can go wrong between Justine and those close to her does, and one could imagine having this kind of irrational fear before a big life event like this.

Overall it captures feelings of sadness and despondency very well, while making our personal troubles seem insignificant, because after all, a giant death planet could come along and smash us up any day now.

Melancholia

That wedding was a disaster, and I really hated the bride after she fucked some other dude after denying her new husband. That was just wrong and raunchy on so many levels. I dont care if youre going through some shit. Go on a bender instead, hoe.

Anyways, after she said she could taste ash in the meatloaf, it was clear that she was clairvoyant (I think thats the word). She knows what will happen and thats why shes been acting the way she has (still hate her, nice rack though).

This movie made me feel depressed. Maybe my serotonin levels were low. First half of the movie was definitely better than the last half. I wanted more back story on the planet, or atleast like news coverage of what the scientist had to say about it. 6/10
