weird how the kid whistling turns the music off

"touch me again you'll be chicken wings in the morning" ok yeah that was pretty good. Ya know what's not good? This robot CGI. Like there's aging badly and then there's whatever the hell this is

literally every car in the city has been abandoned and the MONORAIL is what you think is the fastest method of travel?

go go power rangers theme never stops being a fuckin bop

no fuckin way does every kid in the city fit on one monorail

you know the monorail has like treads or some shit, you can't just put a piece of metal bird under it and expect it to just roll over and reattach on the other side

ok lord zedd and rita repulsa cheering for the power rangers is so great

THE SLIGHT KNEE RAISE IS THE IN CASE OF EMERGENCY BUTTON

DOES IVAN OOZE HAVE SENSITIVE HUMAN TESTICLES

not even gonna begin to question how this great power shit works to somehow repair a whole facility and bring a dead man back to life, this should really be a bigger deal, they can literally reverse death

"hey, anything's possible. I resurrected the dead a few minutes ago."

so I guess all the parents and kids remember everything. hope none of them are traumatized by being mind controlled into hard labor and attempted suicide or anything

UH OH. WE'RE IN TROUBLE.

5/10

Portrait of a Lady on Fire (2019)

So I watched this twice, the second time sober, and I appreciated it more.

I counted 3 times where a lady was on fire in this film:

  1. When Marianna is stripped naked near the fireplace trying to dry herself from jumping in the ocean to save her canvases. It looks like she is on fire.
  2. When she accidently lights the headless portrait on fire.
  3. When Heloise and Marianna have a moment near the fire, and Heloise dress catches on fire.
One thing I didn't understand. When she was seeing what seemed like a ghost of Heloise in the hallway. I think this happens twice. And then they have one moment of looking at each other when Heloise chases after her in the white dress and says "turn around". Did Heloise have a twin sister?

Anyway, I'm a sucker for love stories. When I saw that she was holding the book open to chapter 28 in her portrait with her child, that almost got me. In a happy way. Bittersweet ending. 9/10

On a purely audiovisual level I really enjoyed this - I'm a sucker for black and white film, especially the way its stylized here with the grainy stock and blown-out contrast. The 90's breakbeat music was totally up my alley and scores bonus points for using Autechre(!). A b&w movie with a techno soundtrack is a unique combination. Kinetic editing further affects an intense, spiky aesthetic that works as an expression of its subjects neurotic state of mind. Eraserhead influence is noticeable.

However some things about it don't work for me. There are weaknesses on the surface - thin characters and vague plot points paired with a ridiculously self-serious vibe - although I guess I could say the same for Enter the Void and I loved the way that came together. I think something about Aronofsky's style just leaves me cold, I had the same problem with Requiem for a Dream. Another part of it is I don't think the math angle is quite as deep as it wants me to believe, and here the vagueness works against it.

I do like the various themes - computers and consciousness, numerology and pareidolia, Jewish mysticism and the Wall Street cabal. A lot of movies by and about Jewish people are very self-conscious about the stereotype of greed (A Serious Man, Uncut Gems) and I'm sensing some of that here in the character starting out gaming the stock market with what turns out to be the Hebrew name of god, later rejecting materialism in the name of truth. I'm also fascinated with the mystic intonations. This is random but last year I saved an interesting comment on the music theory subreddit that's strangely relevant to this movie's esoteric side - https://www.reddit.com/r/musictheory/comments/g0n45n/my_friend_said_calling_sounds_tonicized_stable/fnb64h4/

I suppose you could read the whole thing as the psychodrama of a mathemetician going through a brain tumor. I wanted to like this more but I gotta call it like it hits me 6/10

Read up about Orpheus and Eurydice. Completely forgot about that story (it was the book that she gave Heloise and drew inside). That makes their last moment together and the ending hit even harder.

Mighty Morphin Power Rangers: The Movie (1995)

As a kid, there were two things that I was obsessed with: the Ninja Turtles and the Power Rangers. I remember seeing this in theatres, and also the next movie with car Zords. This was a trip down memory lane. It's funny how much of this stuff I kinda remembered. I did forget about Dulcea, too, which is weird. She's hot af. It's a shame she didn't have a bigger role. Her character is straight out of Chrono Trigger (Ayla).

The CGI didn't age well. Especially the Zord fights. But back then that shit looked amazing! There were some cheesy one-liners, but some of them were OK. Kimberly had a lot of puns. The fight that had the most was when they fought those four rock dudes at the monolith. "Back off boulder breath", "hey, lava-head!", "let's rock his world", "talk about a splitting headache".

Super corny but I enjoyed it mostly cause of nostalgia. Ivan Ooze was a character, fur sure. I use to watch the show but other than the green ranger drama and white ranger, I don't remember much. Did they adopt these sacred animals from this movie into the show?

Alot of stuff didn't make sense, but the funniest is how they bring up ryan's comet out of nowhere. Did they even mention it early on? The knee to the crotch for emergencies, aye-yai-yai-yai-yai.

The soundtrack still slaps, though. 5/10

They end up with the same ones in the show but they look a little different since it's not CGI. And it was already their third set of zords, they had to churn out the collectible toys.

Five movies in two days.

Pi (1998)

This movie was bizarre. The way it started off I had some Fight Club vibes, and then some Matrix vibes when the Drum & Bass kicks in. I didn't mind the black and white, and the dialogue between Max and his Go playing friend, forgot his name, the one who had the strokes, they were interesting. Same with Max and the random Jewish guy who suspiciously would show up everywhere he went. This movie was just strange. Like you were in the mind of someone going insane. Or someone suffering from a brain tumor or mental illness.

That guy in the subway that was bleeding out, that was himself, right? And him coming across a brain on the stairs and poking at it. Made it seem like it was his brain. That scene near the end was pretty gruesome, if only for a second. I really don't know how I feel about this one. The premise was interesting with him finding the 216 digit number, but then they lost me with the religious stuff - God's real name is a 216 digit number!? I mean, I do like the theory of God being a super computer, but I usually keep that to myself so others don't think I'm crazy. >,>

So for a possible future nomination, if there's two movies that aren't related to each other at all as far as story and world go, but they were initially released as a double-feature similar to Grindhouse, can I nominate watching both movies together as one movie even though they are technically two unique movies?

I've done very little research on the movies so I'm not even 100% sure I want to watch them at all yet, but I liked the idea behind them.

yeah as long as there's reasonable justification you can nominate anything since it's a different matter whether people will vote for it

So, what movies are people here looking forward to in the future? I saw the trailer for Memoria today that piqued my interest, and The Green Knight has been something I've been interested in for quite a while now.

Also Dune, which I hold out no hope for as far as being good but I'm still going to watch anyway.

easily gonna be Last Night in Soho for me as #1. Edgar Wright directing a psychological horror starring Thomasin McKenzie and Anya Taylor-Joy seems like something that's basically made for me.

Also looking forward to the Marvel movies and Suicide Squad, in particular excited for Doctor Strange: Multiverse of Madness.

Candyman I really hope is good because I loved the original but I'm hesitant to get too hopeful.

Last Night in Soho is gonna be amazing!

Also looking forward to Suicide Squad, The Green Knight & Candyman.

Although my top pick right now would have to be Terrifier 2. Terrifier is one of the best slashers of all time and Art the Clown is simply creepy as all hell, his performance is so dynamic and intense.

Old because it remains of peak twist Shyamalan.

Venom: Let There Be Carnage because I'm excited to finally see one of my all-time favorite characters in a live-action film. And the first was a bit of a guilty like for me. I love symbiotes in Marvel so it's hard for me to outright dislike it.

Halloween Kills since the previous Halloween was surprisingly great and brought the series back to its roots in a really enjoyable way, Jamie Lee Curtis was really on her a-game.

Don't Breathe 2 is a must even if it kind of just looks like the same movie again.

Resident Evil: Welcome to Raccoon City because it sounds promising but I'm not holding my breath.

And this is probably way off for now but Something in the Dirt, the next Benson/Moorhead movie!

I'm Thinking of Ending Things (2020)

This movie seemed like it was going through someone's life, someone's memories, and I thought it was Lucy's memories for a majority of the time. But the last 20 mins or so, pretty much from the Ice Cream pitstop, it seemed like it shifted to be more of Jake's. I'm so confused. Who the hell gets Ice Cream in a blizzard?

But I guess that was the point. Things were just a little off. It all started during the awkward dinner scene. I also vaguely remember seeing a couple rehearsing a dance in a school hallway and looking terrible and out of sync. And then we get that dance scene towards the end with professionals, which was my favorite part of the movie. I noticed the janitor coat in the washer when Lucy went down to the basement to clean the nightgown. It all seemed like a lucid dream. Is Lucy the dream?

The long talks in the car got old after a while. They just dragged on about random shit. Jake has the personality and charisma of a serial killer. Everything became just so gloomy and depressing. Though I couldn't stop laughing at how horrible the makeup was on everyone in the scene where he accepts an award or whatever. It looked like they just grabbed a black Sharpie and drew wrinkles in.

Eh, 6/10, I guess.

Is Lucy the dream?
An interpretation that I read and I think makes a whole lot of sense is that Lucy and Jake are dreamed up by the Janitor. Specifically, Jake is an idealized, younger version of the Janitor, who was a smart and diligent kid (winning those trivia and earning that badge) but socially awkward, while Lucy is the idealized version of a woman who the Janitor saw once at a bar and wishes he'd had the courage to talk to (despite that she was at the bar for an anniversary with the girlfriend). Moreover, Jake and Lucy are there as some sort of representation of the Janitor's internal mental struggle whether or not to end himself ("I'm thinking of ending things.")

The Memory Police (???) - mentioned above

Kate (2021) - found this while randomly browsing letterboxd one day and it's been on my watchlist since. literally only because of the name

Cleopatra (???) - biography written by Stacy Schiff that i read years ago that i randomly found out was getting adapted and directed by fucking Denis Villeneuve. i don't know if they're going for a historically accurate biopic or more dramatized version but whatever it is i'm fucking down

So, the double feature I was thinking about nominating was Aragami / 2LDK. They're a pair of movies made by two directors because of a challenge, where they each had to make a ~60 minute movie in one week, taking place in one location with only two main characters, one director using men and the other women, one of whom must die during the movie. After the movies were over, audiences then apparently placed their ticket stub in a box for the movie they enjoyed more. Probably not going to end up nominating them mostly because I find myself interested in the idea of the competition more than either of the individual movies.

Outside of things like film festivals which are more free-for-all, are there any other kind of 1v1 competitions like this?
