Power Rangers - 4/10

It's been so long since I've seen the Power Rangers, I forgot the movie wasn't the original US entrance for the Sentai series. Caught me off guard when the characters were just there as if I was supposed to already be familiar with them, as in my mind I guess I was expecting what, in actuality, was the first few episodes of the US tv series. Also, I don't recall seeing any Sentai scenes at all, so I imagine the movie was 100% original material, which is a shame because the cgi in the final scenes was painful and easily the worst part of the movie. That and some of the pop culture references. I can't imagine either parents or kids caring about a Brady Bunch Reunion reference at the time.

Also, I was unaware that they're still making Power Rangers. I know when I watch PlutoTV, Tubi and other random 'watch tv' apps there seems to always be a Sentai channel with endless variations of the show, but I thought the US amalgamations of them were more a 90's and early 2000's kind of thing and then it stopped. Nope.

The ending was well timed, because all of the fireworks were going off at exactly the same time as all my idiot neighbors decided to set their own off. Can't wait until midnight. Hell, if it wasn't for the ridiculous dryness that is Oregon right now they wouldn't have even waited until July 4th, as people around here usually turn fireworks into a two week event just to make my dog as miserable as possible for as long as possible.

Haven't had a chance to watch any lately but I will post a rating for Portrait of a Lady on Fire awhile because I saw that one in the last year

The reductionist in me wants to say this fulfills the expected tropes of a gay period drama (and the cynic in me feels like it wasn't a coincidence that Ammonite came out within a year of it). That's of course discounting everything this film does right, which is, of course, a lot. Cline Sciamma (who also directed Tomboy, an LGBT movie I loved for largely similar reasons that this succeeds) specializes in slow, long shots that emphasize the longing desire of its characters. In Tomboy, it was the longing of the main character to be seen as a boy. In Portrait of a Lady on Fire, it's the longing to simply be seen, by each other. The whole film focuses on that idea of seeing and being seen; the basic concept is about painting a portrait, an act that specifically requires extended periods of simply staring at another and recognizing their features.

I don't know that this film is one I'd want to watch multiple times. Maybe years later to look back, but the slow pacing and buildup also make it something that's difficult to just sit down and watch for the fun of it. It didn't hit me as hard as Tomboy did, and I found myself more in a position of "I respect this" than "I enjoy it."

I want to give it an 8.5 but I'll round down to an 8/10

That does make me want to raise the question:

What are your favorite "Twin Films?"

essentially, films that came out around the same time (usually within a year or two of each other) and are about very similar subject matter. Portrait of a Lady on Fire and Ammonite are one of the most significant recent pairings.

There's a big list of them on wikipedia, but of course there are more than what are listed there

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Twin_films

I'll look at the list in just a second, but the only movies I can even think of off the top of my head are White House Down and Olympus Has Fallen, and I haven't seen either of them. I'm going to assume there's a lot on there I never would've thought to compare in this way, though.

Venom & Upgrade because it's hilarious

But some others I like just going down the list:
Dr. Strangelove/Fail Safe
Roar/Savage Harvest
The Howling/Wolfen
The Day After/Threads
The Return of the Living Dead/Day of the Dead
Dark City/The Matrix

Some are kinda questionable though, like they seem more rip-offs or a capitalization on the same idea? Like Quiet Place and The Silence, or Gremlins & Ghoulies.

So these are the pairs on there where I've seen both movies listed, in order of favorites. Order is a bit loose as I like The Road more than Rambo or Commando, but I like all three of them quite a bit more than The Book of Eli so I put the pair with the weakest movie below the middling pair.

Also, unpopular opinion but I like Dark City more than the Matrix.

Dark City - The Matrix
The Return of the Living Dead - Day of the Dead
Rambo: First Blood Part II - Commando
The Road - The Book of Eli
Mission to Mars - Red Planet
Freddy vs. Jason - Alien vs. Predator
The Amityville Horror - The Shining
Street Fighter - Mortal Kombat

There's two movies on my watch list, The Raid and The Wanderers, that would give me two more pairs on this list if they get picked here or if I just decide to watch them for any other reason.

Yeah, even of the list of eight pairs I've seen there's a couple I wouldn't have put on this list myself.

Yeah I'll agree there's some that are questionable, and others that I hadn't thought of at the time but make a lot of sense in hindsight. To an extent, I think it's because they can happen so many different ways, so some are basically ripoffs, while others are coincidences, and still others are intentional competition.

A few that aren't necessarily my favorite movies but my favorite examples:

Jobs - Steve Jobs
Once Steve Jobs died, it was basically a race to see who could put a movie out about him first. Jobs won the race but ended up with a much more poorly received movie.

The Jungle Book - Mowgli: Legend of the Jungle
Fun fact, Mowgli was actually intended to come out the same year as The Jungle Book, but ended up with several pushbacks, so by the time it actually came out, it was essentially written off, after Disney's had been such a success.

Happy Feet - Surf's Up
Probably the first one I actually remember noticing in real time. I would've been about 14 or so when Surf's Up came out, and I distinctly remember thinking "wait, another one?" before even knowing what twin films were.

No Strings Attached - Friends with Benefits
This has to be the most well-known examples, to the point where it kind of became a meme, because these were literally the exact same movie. No Strings Attached was even originally titled Friends with Benefits but had to change it.

some of my other favorites:
The Road to El Dorado - The Emperor's New Groove
Freddy vs. Jason - Alien vs. Predator
The Prestige - The Illusionist
Repo! The Genetic Opera - Repo Men
The Raid - Dredd
Goodbye Christopher Robin - Christopher Robin
Skate Kitchen - Mid90s

PS: @Camden I highly, highly recommend both The Raid films, they're excellent

From that list I'd have to go with Thin Red Line/Saving Private Ryan, Fear of a Black Hat/CB4, and Babe/Gordy

A loose one that comes to mind is Elephant Man/Raging Bull. Both black and white 1980 best picture nominees where the title character has the famous line "I am not an animal!"

Although their releases were five years apart so it doesn't fit the criteria listed, Black Swan and Whiplash have been my go-pair as far as thematic similarities go.

So Netflix Indonesia has noticeably different library compared to the US, but I'm glad I found some of our movies there:

Saint Maud
6.5/10
Psychedelic and dark, I get what the movie is trying to do, but it just doesn't stick the landing for me (unlike those nails sticking to Maud's feet).
I like the premise of "unhinged zealot tries to save someone's soul in her own twisted way" but Maud is just too unstable and violent to make the process exciting. I liked it when she tried to get intel from the new caretaker, but afterwards she just...sneaks in in the middle of the night and tries to baptize Amanda or something.
Also, the moments where we see/hear her delusions are cool, but we need either more stark juxtaposition between her reality and what other people see, or just blurs the line between reality and fantasy a bit more. Great, haunting final shot though.
I also appreciate its relatively brisk runtime.

I've actually watched Synecdoche, New York before, so this Kaufman approach felt familiar.
It was a satisfying watch and kept me guessing at the true nature of the characters throughout the movie, with some tense moments. It was not the easiest watch but it could keep me engaged most of the time. I love the mystery and the descent into madness and the musical references. I especially enjoy trying to catch every little hint that there's something off and try to piece together what is actually happening.
It's also great how the dialogues in themselves wouldn't be crazy weird but the delivery and context just make them very chilling.
Though, as expected, the ending was left ambiguous and I had to consult TV Tropes to read what it was all about.
Also, the random trivia reminded me of something the Zero Escape series would do.

Hoop Dreams (1994)

A true story about following your dreams and navigating through a life of poverty trying to rise out of it. Of the two co-stars, I was more interested in Arthur Agee's story. What St. Joe's put him through was wrong. And making his parents, who were struggling to make ends meet, pay to release his transcripts was bullshit. That cashier guy that the Agee's were negotiating to pay off their debt was an asshole. Like when Arthur Sr. went in to hug him you could tell he just wanted them to leave and didn't care, putting on a fake smile. St. Joe's coach could have helped Arthur Agee, I have no doubts, but yeah, I think he didn't believe in him, gave up, and let him get kicked out during a school year. I'm glad Arthur Agee got some type of revenge, making it farther than St. Joe's did during his time in High School. That coach had the look of regret on his face when he was watching Arthur in the Final Four playoffs. On the other hand, it was sad to see William Gates suffer through injuries and having a coach who was too busy trying to win than taking care of his boys. Gates should've sat out until he was fully recovered. Fuck that greedy coach.

Power Rangers

Honestly I feel like I would have rather recorded an entire commentary track or something because I wanted to say something about literally almost every moment even if most of it boils down to lol look at this

I had the biggest fucking smile on my face as the Higher Ground cover started for the skydiving. Everything is so corny and I said I would mark down how every time I cringed but all the cringeworthy moments I thought there would be just made me laugh instead since I was fully on board with the ridiculousness as the nostalgia just flowed all over the place from everyones color-coordinated outfits to the rollerblading montage right after the skydiving to show how XTREME they are (pointing out that there is a conspicuous lack of Tommy shots here because Jason David Frank actually could not rollerblade).

I think a distinction I have to point out about my history with this movie which is probably different than most peoples is that I never watched an episode of the show until sometime in my 20s. Im unsure as to whether that was because I literally did not know that the show was a thing when I was a kid or what but I just watched specifically this movie over and over so the cast of the original Red, Black and Yellow Ranger means nothing to me. The Green Ranger did not exist to me and this movie was basically the entirety of the Power Rangers to me and I was still fucking obsessed. So of course when I finally saw an episode of the show years later on Netflix or wherever after this obsession had faded I was immediately struck by how BAD the show was lmao. And by that I mean it reaaally was catering to its target demographic in a way that was so blatant that it was exhausting (yes I know that the same could be said about the movie). There are childrens shows that are more watchable for adults but when it came to this show, I was checking out after the tenth WACKY sound effect during the supposed comedic scenes (ended up speeding through most of the important episodes eventually because I had never seen them but I cant say it was an enjoyable experience). So obviously I have nostalgia goggles on when it comes to the movie and thats the main reason of the difference in my perception of the two but the movie has so many moments of unintentional (but is it really tho) comedy that I have a genuine affection for which makes it so much funnier.

There are just so many great moments that I could spend most of my time just going over every scene and line and maybe this will be on my list of potential projects that remain unfinished for eternity. Like the whole rollerblading scene. Where are they going? Why is going through the construction site a shortcut? Imagine the scene without the music! But BY FAR my favorite thing about this movie is the CONSTANT BACKFLIPPING. Notice how in the first big fight with the ooze monsters (you ooze you lose) after Kimberly knocks one of them down and triggers a fart that she says seeya while backflipping away but then Billy comes right after saying Right behind you ALSO BACKFLIPPING AWAY ITS SO GOOD and then to add to that after they morph they start posing and flipping and the monsters just take that time to FUCKING RUN AWAY AAAAAaaaa

Some more general comments to end this with: Ivan Ooze is actually just a really fun and charistmatic character with some of the best lines along with Kimberly. Also hilarious that the great power they go searching for is literally referred to as the great power. I reactively let out an audible hoooly shit when the CGI ooze robots showed up because it was so jarring. I think probably what my attitude changed towards the most since the last time I watched this was the whole subplot with Fred and the kids in that I found them significantly more annoying and wanted to go back to either the Rangers or Ivan as soon as possible.

Anyway still had a blast. 8/10

non-stop backflipping has to be the worst way to navigate a fight

also why wouldn't you just morph immediately when fighting bizarre killer monsters

does your morphing really take long enough for that entire gang of monsters to escape? That seems like a design flaw

having two of them be tiger-based seems lazy, especially since the White Tiger isn't even an extinct creature

topical Brady Bunch reunion reference I totally get in 2021

"Have a nice trip, see you next fall! Bye-bye. Gotta love it."
I REMEMBER THAT LINE WORD FOR WORD 20 YEARS LATER

the sword flies through the air like wild toward the hanging cord, and instead of cutting it, IT STOPS IN MID-AIR AND USES LASER EYES ON IT?!?!?!?

is the purple phlegm scene really necessary ffs who wanted that

*infinitely backflips through the sky* *slowly traverse rocky terrain so as not to fall*

THEN IT CUTS AWAY AND THEY'RE ON A WIDE CLEARED PATH, WHY WERE THEY CLIMBING OVER THOSE ROCKS ANYWAY

the rear talons are not touching kimberly, how is the bird creature holding her

woah how did I not remember this amazon babe being in the movie. Think the last time I watched this was pre-puberty :|

"We're different. We won't fail." *immediately fails* fucking classic

is that dude listening to fuckin They Might Be Giants

"Let's get sticky!" is the worst tagline I've ever heard

you literally juts met these people why do you claim to already know this much about them

fuckin Adam Park gets the frog, and her justification for it is that "oh kissing them makes a handsome prince" when literally she just talked directly about how great everybody else was

so the mind control ooze only affects parents. Does that mean it knows whether they have spawned offspring? How does that work?

*staring dramatically into the distance* "It's time."
yeah no shit kimberly was saying you guys had to hurry like 20 minutes ago before your whole roping ceremony

you took over a professional construction operation full of modern equipment; why are you having everyone do the excavation work with pickaxes and bare hands???

So for a possible future nomination, if there's two movies that aren't related to each other at all as far as story and world go, but they were initially released as a double-feature similar to Grindhouse, can I nominate watching both movies together as one movie even though they are technically two unique movies?

I've done very little research on the movies so I'm not even 100% sure I want to watch them at all yet, but I liked the idea behind them.

oh shit a Jurassic Park reference from when Jurassic Park was still a new thing

ah yes the one neck bone that holds the entire skeleton together, how did I not think of that?

dude is fucking mind controlling them into mass suicide???!? and this is a kid's movie?!??!!!?

if they're made of reanimated stone why do they dissolve in water

so 1. dissolve in water, 2. had some stone fall on it and just died (despite being made of stone??) 3. got split in half, sure and 4. got kicked into a wall and EXPLODED?????

She caught me off guard when I was watching the movie. Everything else in Power Rangers is in a giant costume and then all of a sudden they're like, nope, put her in a fucking bikini. Not complaining, though.

Also, after googling her to try and remember what the characters name was, apparently the role was supposed to be played by Mariska Hargitay from Law and Order: SVU but they fired her during the middle of the movie.
