This is a different kind of Top 100, mostly because it isn't either a top anything or ordered in any kind. What it is, are 100 moments I've picked out from 100 games both big and small, heard of and unknown that represent. The catch is this is of course my list, I'm not listing Fortnite or Among us here because IGN lists it as a top 100 game and need emergency street cred. These are simply 100 games I've experienced with 100 reallyyyy goood moments.

General Topic Spoiler Warning: There will be plot and feature spoilers for around 100+ games here. I will mark each section but there will be unmarked spoilers in this thread. I'll do my best to bold each section though

Honorable Mentions

Super Mario Bros. 3
Can't really give this credit since 99% of gamers never realized Mario 3 was a stage play until the internet really came along and made us realize in the late 2000s.

The first moments
Our first experience with well 2d gaming or 3d gaming or vr or online multiplayer are all just personal moments. So shoutouts to stuff like mario 64s courtyard experience running around chasing butterflies but thats not what I'm looking for here. There will be some Wow moments here but thats because of what the game does, not just breaking my person ground for first vr experience.

Spider-Man The Movie
The best part about this lousy movie tie in game wasn't found til years later. The fact the developers made a mode you play as Harry Osborn finding his dads gear and becoming the hero goblin to take his father down is years ahead of spiderman 3 but also just wild. Theres bits of dialog left where harry monologues to himself but overall the modes not finished. The glider is though and its fantastic to fly.

Final Fantasy Tactics Advance
Still not accepted by many so I'll leave it here. The realization that Marche is the actual villain of this tale, hellbent on returning to how things were at the cost of others. He is hellbent on wiping the world from existence.

Miitopia
Too subjective to really list. But the random mii feature made this just a hilarious blast everytime you met NPCs. Shame the npcs dried up at later parts of the game

Flipside
Worst Moment: Lufia: The Ruins of Lore
There is a point very late in this game where everything suddenly clicks. You are playing the remnants of an abandoned side game about Lufia 2. The game wanders aimlessly for much of the experience, you see this game has no Sinistrals because it takes place 15 years after Lufia 2. So whats it really about? Dekar. The game really only has character development for him and much of the games plot centers around him. Infact you even go to war with him and win it, he then retires and walks off leaving you a party member down (and your best honestly). In his place they give you a talking kobold thats supposed to be a blue mage...except they never finished programming that aspect of the character so your left at end game a party member down and in a lot of hot water.

Worst Moment: Sonic the Hedgehog 2 SMS/GG
The hang glider remains one of the worst control switches of all time. Even knowing how to use it, it is still very bad

Worst Moment: Rayman
This is a brutally hard game unlike future installments and when you finally get right before the end...they tell you to go 100% the game and get all the collectibles or you can eff off. After dozens of hours looking for sometimes invisible collectibles you get a final world that takes about 20-30 mins and didn't finish the last boss. Thanks.

Worst Moment: Mercenaries 2: World in Flames
Mercs 2 is a mess of a game that promised a ton and fulfilled none of it... but it builds up to you dropping a nuke on the enemy base. The catch is they are in a bunker so its like a bunker buster. The game warns you not to get too close after setting the detonator. This is just a lie though as you can walk right into the blast and nothing happens at all.

Reading the Spider-Man bit reminded me of the cheat to play as Mary Jane. Because she's a reskin of Spidey, the cutscenes aren't changed, so if you finish the game as her, you get to see Mary Jane kiss herself.

Final Fantasy X
The Moment: To Zanarkand

Best listened too with: https://youtu.be/5lP_anjF6rA

FFX is not my favorite of the series but its probably one of the more iconic games I've ever played. Its gorgeous start to finish, it has great dialog and cringy dialog (an FF staple!), an amazing turn based battle system, distinct characters you learn to love or hate, a fantastic soundtrack, and a world that stands out as memorable.

The game opens with a bunch of weapons piled together, the party you don't know yet sitting around a fire and then one guy gets up to utter this famous phrase

Listen to my story. This...may be our last chance.

Its a powerful moment and you haven't even started the game. Many hours later we get back to this moment and see it play out with context. Zanarkand, the fabled city is indeed no more. This is a major yet small arc of the story that has so much weight to it. We the player saw Zanarkand but we also had the hunch it was long gone. This arc of the story ends with the confrontation with Yunalesca and the reveal of what Sin truly is.

So much could have went wrong with this setup and it works so well never dropping the ball. Thank goodness the laughing scene was far removed from this part.

The Legend of Zelda: Majoras Mask
Day 2

Best listened to with:https://youtu.be/eS_42yIISl8

This may seem confusing when you consider all the great moments this game has to offer. Some silly, some gut-wrenching, and some that involve a wretched precise 3 day quest. Day 2 of the 3 day cycle Link is trapped in is the most eye opening thing to happen in the 5th generation of gaming.

Think back to the start of this game, you're in the woods and get tricked into becoming a Deku Scrub and then you encounter the happy mask salesman. You leave the clock tower and theres a town. But your focus is getting the great fairy fixed to get magic to then get into the bomber hideout to then spy on Skull Kid then grab the tear which you trade to access the top of the clock tower. You can do this in just a small amount of time but your first time may take well a bit more time if you are truly on a blind play.

The true magic here is starting day 2 and realizing...wait its raining? Wait people are doing different things? Day 1 hammers in that npcs are on a schedule but the card that the game keeps up its sleeve is each day is in fact different.

Each of the three days have their own theme to them:
-Mischief is abound but the world keeps going
-The rain slows everything down
-The panic has set in and people have fled

The Bombers Notebook only covers characters with sidequests but you can follow some of these characters like this guy

Have no actual quests behind him and yet he has an entire 3 day arc you can follow. Is it interesting? not really but you can actually track his life over the 3 days which is just a pretty wild concept for an N64 era game. The same goes with dialog, as almost every talkable NPC in the game will react differently to your collection of masks. If you want lore about say the trading post, talk to this guy with the Stone Mask and learn his theory about the trading post being a scam.

Overall its a combination of many small things taking a player interested in more than just hacking and slashing on a wild ride of a world that almost feels alive.

Castlevania Symphony of the Night
...But that's not all!

I'm gonna be honest I almost just went with the prologue. No game dialog is etched in my brain like the What Is A Man? speech between Dracula and Richter. Its a wonderful interaction and one I even used many years ago for a public speaking course as it was the only thing I could think of on the fly.

But that just sets the game up, one of the best games of all time and a game that really put a genre on the map. A genre that is now one of my favorites and is beloved by many even if the names debated a lot.

But there is another moment in this game that is just so incredible to those not in the know. Unfortunately its one of those known moments that is completely ruined by just knowing of its existence. Luckily that was not the case for myself when I originally played thru this game.

See if you just kill the Belmont who has become the lord of Draculas castle you get a bad end. But if you wear the glasses Maria gives you, you can see a spirit possessing poor Richter. Now heres the thing, finding this is a battle of fighting the castle itself. You have to explore a ton of nooks and crannies but its worth it. Upon beating him you expect to fight the big man but...you don't

The wizard Shaft swears he'll get you next time and then something truly strange happens, a cgi cutscene of Draculas Castle. Except what is this, a second upside down castle appears from above and connects the two castles. Welcome to the Inverted Castle, its pretty much the same locale you went thru but now upside down and chock full of new items, bosses and content to explore. The % of your map suddenly jumps passed 100% and when you thought you were near the end the goal post moved down the block on you.

Like many other famous twists in game history, this moment is mostly ruined. But occasionally you find a blind player who hasn't the clue and rediscovers this long lost magic once again.

Gravity Rush Remastered
The bus that time forgot

Just a good song: https://youtu.be/3zEeJ2X0uFg

I remember I bought my Vita (#teamVita) for Gravity Rush! I played thru the game and loved it despite the awful gyro controls. I think my true appreciation of the game came from the excellent PS4 remaster. I platinumed it this time and got to experience the beauty of this world at every corner.

To set up the game some Kat fell from I guess the heavens with no real memory of who she was. She ends up finding this cat that lets her control gravity, from here she helps the town which is being tormented by gravity storms and acts as kind of a super hero. She does odd jobs, has a short military career but overall mostly is the towns hero.

At one point she follows a trail that leads her to going down off the floating city farther than anyone has gone. She keeps going and as she does the game slowly starts zooming out and getting quieter and quieter. Eventually you fall so far you fall thru a giant tree. This segment literally is around 20-30 mins of just going down and down to drive home how far down you are going. Then Raven attacks, see raven is a brunette gravity shifter who shows up to attack you at various parts of your storyline and you fend her off, this time though Kat loses and falls thru the tree.

Kat wakes up in a strange cage in a stranger tree city filled with children. You eventually learn that these are a group of missing kids. Throughout the game you heard rumors and whispers about a bus full of children that fell off the edge of the world but when that happened is unclear. Kat eventually saves them with the help of Raven, they fix an ark and gravity shift it back to the town.

One of the boys Zaza is still very sad because of his lost sister Sachya who fell off the world and died. Well Raven reveals to Kat she is Sachya and then drops this bomb "Hmph. No one up there cares about these kids. Even if you found a way to get back to the city, everyone you knew would be long gone!"

It isn't clear at first until they arrive back in the main city and a year has passed despite Kat only being gone a single day. Yes the school bus had fell off the world ages ago, because in this crazy world time flows differently. Time flows normally in the city, it slows to a crawl the lower you go, and the higher you go it goes faster (An older man you can find at some point tells you about going to the kingdom above for decades but when he returns no one believes him as hes been gone a single day)

This moment opens up the Gravity Rush lore in a huge way and really begins the final arc flipping what you know about the world on its head. Its started so strangely out of nowhere as well that it completely trips the player up, gets you involved in a whole different story and then finally starts tearing down the curtain on some of this worlds mysteries.

Glad to see Gravity Rush get some recognition. One of my favorite bits from the second one is when you're investigating the thieves and you're told to jump down. Revealing a whole other town below. Then after completing that quest, you're not given the marker for the next one and have to discover the city above as well. A really great way to show the jump from the first game to the second.

Naruto: Ultimate Ninja Storm 2
Sakura Vs Sasori

The first Naruto Storm for a long time was a ps3 exclusive and one that people had some whispering good things. But the actuality is the game works but feels a bit sloppy in execution. The 2nd game looked to change things and you do get hints in the games first two tutorial bosses (Naruto and Sakura Vs Kakashi, and Gaara Vs that paper bomb dude) but these are just small tastes.

Its a really amazing choice to have the series big turning point for the epic scale feature to this point the series most useless character. Styling itself just like the anime its based on, Naruto Storm 2 makes Sakuras big fight against the puppet master of the Akatsuki incredible.

CyberConnect2 would perfect this style in a future release but this was the first time gamers were truly treated to their blend of hack and slash meets QTE perfection. Sakuras fight has big bombastic QTE scenes matched with smaller hand to hand combat.

Actually this fight is BETTER than the anime. It doesn't stop for flashbacks or monologues. Its just an incredible action piece start to finish. I think if the game opened up with such a bombastic fight this moment would be a bit lost, you go into this fight expecting a rather smalltime fight only to get something completely crazy.

It's one of those moments that is so hard to translate to words

Mad Max
Take Shelter

Avalanche made the Just Cause franchise and they also did this game to tie in with the movie at the time. They actually were working on a sequel but with the all mad max property freeze they ended up shifting that into what became Rage 2.

Anyway this game is a really dreary sandbox filled with sand, grease, dirt, fire and burned out structures. It is a good game but never hits great moments with the best parts being the vehicle combat.

At random you will encounter sudden sandstorms, these are a bit annoying but they happen. When you encounter one of the massive thunder sand storms that your breath is taken a back. I only ever encountered two of these storms and both were really powerful and frightening. And yet its the only thing that super stood out in this lengthy title. But it left an impression seeing lightning and sand being thrown around like some kind of disaster film.

Scribblenauts
It works...it sucks

Perhaps one of the most well known letdowns of the NDS era but also maybe success stories cause despite its shortcomings everyone became aware of this crazy ambitious game. Scribblenauts blew up thanks to NEOGAF at the time who caught wind from some E3 demos and impressions. The game from 5th Cell sounded crazy ambitious.

Type words and the thing appears and you use this to solve puzzles. Imagination was defined by your words and it sounded like the dictionary would be huge. Well their are many words there and getting stuff to appear wasn't an issue. The issue was the thing no one expected, horrendous controls.

For some reason controlling Maxwell was down not with the dpad but the stylus making the screen room cramped and the game would get super confused about what you were trying to touch or activate. Not to mention 5th cell did a ton of action puzzles relying on shaky combat. Another poor move.

The sequel Super Scribblenauts would introduce adjectives and dpad control, it also switched the focus entirely to puzzle situations making the game so much better.

So yea Scribblenauts was a wow I can't believe this works and then the hard realization that a few shaky design choices bring the entire experience crashing to the ground.

Dragon Quest XI
Waiting for Godot...

Best paired with https://youtu.be/7Dn61KjXlao

After the classic rpg part 1 where everything goes wrong and the world is doomed (this time the world tree falling apart with the heroes on the top of it) I was excited to get the band back together. Its a great narrative way of taking the cast you love and letting them breathe off camera to grow. If done right the reconnection ends up being a fun premise. Many rpgs, tv shows and anime have done this with great success.

So the entire 2nd part of DQ11 I was so hyped to get the party back especially Veronica and Serena because one was my bomb mage and the other was my healer. You actually recover everyone else first before getting these two. On the way to Veronica and Serenas hometown (their sisters) you encounter this black dragon. You actually don't fight him in the first part iirc because he was frozen? Or maybe you do. Either way hes not bad then, but now your without your best healer and damage flinger for magic.

After barely surviving the fight serena comes in to help you stunning the beast with her violin. But no veronica, Serena believes she went back home. When you get there though nobody is there, so one last place Serena suggests the garden where they used to play.

And then Serena spots her by the tree and she doesn't look good laying aginst the tree. Well maybe she looks asleep.

Her staff starts to glow, the Hero's hand glows and Serena suggests to touch it.

Suddenly its the end of part 1 and the World tree is breaking apart. Veronica uses her magic to suspend the others in a protective barrier and then blasts them across the world both saving them from the crushing, explosion of energy, and hiding them from the games big bad. And then Veronica...dies

And at this point my heart breaks. I'd been so excited to get back my mages this whole 2nd act of the game and I never expected this to happen. After this cutscene ends I was like ok they'll just....oh crap she just turned to dust in front of the rest of the partys eyes. It starts to rain and the party is heartbroken and angry.

I've played a lot of rpgs and this will always stand up as one of the most devastating moments for me.
