- Apply to 5000 job postings, most of them requiring a 20 minute assessment
- Hear an actual reply from maybe 10 of them
- 6 are rejections
- 2 are for jobs that are completely different from what you saw in the listing (and are likely MLM schemes)
- The remaining 2 jobs require 3 separate interviews that require you to take off on 3 separate days
- Even after all that, there's still a strong possibility you'll get rejected anyway because the company already had somebody in mind
- Also piss in this cup to prove you don't smoke marijuana in your free time

They actually had a documentary about those on either HBO Max or Netflix (can't remember) and how they're blatantly discriminatory.

Not to mention that 90% of the time, the "test" in question is basically a test to see how much of the company's kool-aid you're willing to drink

The two times I've really looked for another job has taken over 6 months. Im on month 7 right now for my current search.

Hell, Ive gone and put my resume on desks, and no call back. One place I really wanted to work at called me for an interview, and I got Covid the next day... I called and told them that it'd be two weeks or if they wanted to Zoom, thats cool. The guy on the phone freaked and told me to call when I was clear, so I did. They never answered or called me back, and I see the ad for the job is up still- three months later

There's a real fun catch-22 in a lot of fields around here: having a security clearance is basically required to get a job. Your application will not be considered if you don't already have one at most places.

You have to have a job that will sponsor your application for a security clearance. It is absolutely not something you can get on your own. No amount of "grit" or "hard work" or "determination" will change this. You cannot get one without employer sponsorship.

You can't get the job without a security clearance. You can't get the security clearance without a job.

I have met 100% of the other qualifications for a job, had multiple people vouch for me, and even had someone tailor my resume specifically to get through a particular company's filter. I was told, specifically, that I couldn't even be considered because of the lack of security clearance for an entry level, sub 50k/year (in an area where that is not in line with CoL) position with no real experience requirements.

read through most of the posts ITT. Don't you get the feeling that we're going through a second industrial revolution? The psychology of there are 1000 people who want this same position, so what makes you special? Now get into the damn bucket with explosives and put them in the mineshaft is back.

These are the trends that got us where we are, in chronological order, but they don't replace each other, they are all going on right now at the same time right now:

Population growth, corporate consolidation, technology making certain jobs unnecessary, sweatshops (for manual and manufacturing jobs), outsourcing (for intellectual and knowledge jobs) and finally automation.

These things are, interestingly enough, things governments have pushed for hard in the past and still try to sell as a good thing.

I'll leave you to draw your own conclusions as to what this means, but I know you're going to reach the same conclusion we all did big companies tell governments what to do, and it was all about squeezing out small companies, individual labor power and the old rules in order to enrich and give power to said big companies

Next time you read a new story going full chicken little about slowing population growth or labor shortages or STEM shortages or any stupid shit like that, remember this is all manipulation

one last thing: when you hear the word competitiveness it sounds good, it sounds avantgarde. What it means is reducing cost. When you hear about the American Competitiveness Act, or when you hear about shit-eating phrases such as making the company more competitive, or the workforce needs to become more competitive what they actually mean is we need to reduce cost and inch closer and closer to third world standards of living, starting with your own salary

A lot of these stem from issues of lazy hiring managers or ones that can't think for themselves. A lot of that is an issue with a lack of training for hiring managers. It's often "here's some questions to print out and ask. Do your best."

Headhunters are often genuinely good at their job and there's a reason why they don't actually work for the company. I wish more places would pony up and use a professional.

It's only going to get worse. Boomers can't/wont retire and will live until their 90's and will never ever give up their cushy management positions. Meanwhile millennials, zoomers, and the next generation will be fighting for the entry and mid level stuff until we die.

You have to be highly specialized in this market. Ten years ago I knew that I'd have to have a master's degree to really succeed in the job market. That's generally true unless you have highly valued skills. It took me years to get to the point where I didn't have to submit myself to the humiliation described ITT, but if you subject yourself to the ringer, eventually you can become marketable. I don't recommend it if you can avoid it, of course.

Haven't had in-person interviews for over a year though, so it hasn't been as fun lately unless you count "abruptly hanging up" as a win (which I do when it happens).

I hate the mind games and back and forth. I cover compensation in the first call and have no problem sharing the range when asked. Id rather know that its worth it to the candidate or not before moving forward and wasting anyones time. If it happens to be a big pay bump for them, I feel really happy I helped get that for them.

As for what to say, you need to do your research and know what the market is offering for the same role and level. Glassdoor, indeed, and other sites will have ranges to look at. Ask your peers. Decide on your range then ask for about $5-10k higher. That gives you wiggle room. Best case they match it, but most likely will meet in the middle and offer what you were actually hoping for. Ideally try and get 2-3 offers so you can come in with more negotiating power.

Ive been on both sides, and while job seeking is worse by far, it still sucks for the employer as well.

1) put out job ad
2) 200 responses
3) 197 of them are from people overseas who barely speak English and are looking to immigrate
4) out of the 3 left, one has no experience, one has been out of a job for 10 years, one looks like he wants to replace the manager
5) repeat the process
6) finally find someone who looks like a good fit. Call them in for an interview
7) they never show up
8) repeat, find someone who turns up for an interview but interviews poorly
9) repeat twice more, finally find a good fit, send a job offer
10) they ghost us

yikes. Im not a manager or anything so I have no say or knowledge as to pay etc, I just sit in some interviews for technical input etc. but its not easy street for employers either

You are talking about the 0.1% though of everyone trying these things. Twitch metrics I think say if you have 100 viewers youre already in the top 10% of twitch or something like that. The people making Millions off of streaming and the like for the most part are rare and for some still actively have to work in the form of editing.

But yeah honestly the employment situation is awful these days. Seeing that my field basically demands a masters now just to get in the door is obscene.
