There used to be a regular art and drawing topic here, always loved browsing through the different sketches and figured it was time for another go at it.

Figured in the interest of the topic lasting we would expand it to any sort of creative projects: sketches, painting, music, writing, electronics, programming, whatever sort of creative projects you've got.

I'll probably be posting things more on the drawing and design side but would love to see what everyone else is working on.

One of the things I've been toiling away at is turning an old GameBoy inspired illustration from a few years back into a deck of playing cards. I've kind of casually collected decks for a while and always wanted to make one; figured no time like the present.

I played around with the idea of custom suits (Carts, Buttons, Batteries, Dpad), but ended up just going with the standard hearts/diamonds/clubs/spades in the interest of the cards not being completely unplayable.

The 2-10 cards are fairly standard, the face cards are carts styled after different top games/series for the system, the Aces are the different systems, and Jokers are the Printer and Camera.

I have a few cards I want to redo the lineart for and not sure if I'll leave the face cards as lineart or add some sort of shading, but getting about there on the overall design.

Been practicing figure sketchingquite a bit, it's always been one of my weaker points and I just generally tried to avoid it so thought time to tackle it head on.

I've been sketching almost daily for close to 2 months and definitely seeing a bit of an improvement; still a long way to go though.
Not sure if GFaqs allows artistic nudity or not, so here's a somewhat filtered selection from the last 2 months from recent to old. (Don't mind the robots that appear when I don't want to draw a face.)

Oh wow, those cards look really cool. They're gonna look great when you get them printed.

I have a lot of ideas for projects but I never end up finishing any of them if I even get them started haha.

Haha yeah, I can definitely relate on leaving projects unfinished. Been trying to make a point of powering through projects instead of getting bored of them at the ~80% mark; we'll have to see if I can get that deck printed or if boredom strikes first and it goes on the backburner another few years.

Here are the main 3 characters of a slow burn project about robots in space that I've been chipping away at every now and then: Sugar Stardust.

????? - Sword + Pistol - Protag, thief with superhero complex
Null - Daggers + Gadgets - Stealthy ninja with a purpose
Float - Brawler w/ Gauntlets - The Vegeta, in the way of Nulls purpose. Works for evil org

All robot life originated from a single planet and to prevent overpopulation they spread endlessly through space.
As civilizations get further from the origin planet their designs are inspired by different eras of technology until it just gets to different sci-fi and abstract designs.
Drawing influence from Mega Man Zero, Jet Set Radio, and DBZ along with a smattering of others.

Planning on each character having their own ship with the main one being the Sugar Stardust named for its pink cotton candy-like exhaust.

I'm not quite sure what form this will all take first, but I've been slowly fleshing out a few possibilities.

-Animation of Null vs Float using Unreal. I've got an animation of Null trying to steal an item from Floats evil org roughly planned out in time with a song. Next step for that one is storyboarding+animatic

-Twin-Stick Shooter using Unity. This would be a roguelite using an existing topdown engine from the asset store so I dont get too lost in the weeds as per usual. Would try to keep it very small in scope

-VR Environment project in Unreal: Basically just model a scene of the world you can stand in and interact with a few things. Maybe a ship parked at a very gas-stationy refueling station

Your work looks nice so far. The influences are easily recognizable and fit in with the rest of your designs.

Two or three years back I picked up writing with mental health as a focus, and I've still been plugging along with that when the motivation is there. It's not something I'm comfortable sharing much since it's focused on the game DDLC and that's a hard sell usually.

I'd like to branch out into prose and other writing focuses but I haven't had much luck making that happen. A lot of the time I don't feel like taking the step out of my comfort zone, so I fall back to what I'm familiar with to avoid going too long without writing anything.

It's interesting how you're deciding between Unreal and Unity but with different game types. Do you have a background in Unreal but found a nice guide for Unity or something?

Thanks, trying to toe that line of homage to my biggest influences vs just copying elements.

I've heard of DDLC but was always told to go into it blind so can't say I know too much about that one.
And yeah, good to break out of the comfort zone from time to time but like you said it can feel like in trying to force yourself to do something new you instead force yourself to put off working on it.

Unity vs Unreal for me comes down to:
-Unity I'm fairly familiar with so I think I could more quickly whip a game together in that (especially using a starter asset, looking at More Mountain's TopDown engine right now)

-Unreal I'm more interested in in terms of animation and building virtual worlds without much of a focus on gameplay. Each new engine update they put out has me wanting to learn it more and Unreal 5 looks absolutely incredible.
I used to do 3d animation about a decade ago and I'm excited to see just how far things have come.

I'm definitely biased because I'm a Unity developer but Unreal is just, kinda difficult to use. It's so much easier to make something in Unity as a solo developer.

That said, nanite and lumen look really good.

Definitely with you on finding Unreal quite a bit more obtuse than Unity, one of the main reasons I haven't jumped into it too much yet. Hoping for good things on the UI side with UE5.

Here's something on the electronics side I started up a month or two ago:
Working on an NES-inspired controller made with an Arduino to play FFXIV with.

This is I think the third or fourth revision; I didnt have any soldering experience beforehand so it was a bit of a learning experience.
Made it mostly as a gimmick controller for gathering/crafting but managed to get enough different output from the limited controls to be able to run some dungeons.

Designed some PCB boards and had them printed up, next step is to solder in the components and make sure the board design works as I really didn't have much of an idea on what I was doing on that end.

After that I've got some planned changes to the code running on the arduino and I want to design a decent looking controller shell for it.
Not sure if I'll try to print that with an SLA printer myself or get it printed by a farm.

Really digging those cards, and the figure drawings are impressive! If you're ever on the B8 discord there's an art-and-drawing tab there; that's where I've been posting my stuff lately, but it doesn't get used a whole lot.

Very cool, dig the style and the world can always use more Parappa art!

Tabletop groups seem like pretty fun drawing projects, that looks like one huge group to tackle. Kind of fun to go through the 2 and match up the characters with their kirby.

and yeah, some of them are tough to match up without context (like Minerva, the blonde girl that turns into bizarre sea creatures) and the Whispy Woods with the gun was definitely one of the most fun to draw

Haha, that poor ape. How many All Star characters are there to go through?

And I'm always surprised at how long it's been since we last saw an Ape Escape game. With the original being all about showcasing the analog sticks I would love to see the team that made Astro's Playroom make an Ape Escape game to see how else they could show off the PS5 controller.

Working on redoing the lineart for the face cards and made it through the Jacks, hoping to try and speed through the rest of the art touchups this weekend.
Decided to add some color to the lineart to see how the carts would look as stickers as well.

I tried out the colored versions on the cards but probably won't go with that as I think I prefer the simplicity of the red v black.

Thanks! I've kinda hopped back and forth on using the colored art or not; I like the individual cards more with color but I like the overall deck more when it's monochromatic.

Going to make some small adjustments to the monochromatic carts so that the hearts/spades carts are lighter and the diamonds/clubs are a bit darker to match the suit symbols.

Oh, this is a cool topic. I've recently gotten into painting minis (minifigures). I've started to paint my own little Warhammer army, and I've went with Necrons (I know very very little about Warhammer Lore, I just like how they look):

Hot damn those mini-figs look great. And with also knowing nothing about Warhammer lore I think I would have had to go with the robo-skeletons too.
How long does it take to do a set of figures, quite a bit of layering to it?

Finished up the deck design, just in time for the long weekend to end!
Not sure what I'll work on next, thinking either start storyboarding out that Sugar Stardust animation or start planning out the second/third chapters of the Chester & The Bad Guy mini-comic.

Thanks! I would say each batch of them took about a few hours total, spread over two days. Well, technically three since I prime the models black first and let them dry. But one day I paint them the models, the next I paint the bases.

It's actually Toro and Kuro from a Japanese series, started back in PS1 era. It's pretty non-existent in the west but basically Sony's mascot in Japan apparently

Oh man thinking about SAI is a nice nostalgia punch, completely forgot about that software.

I've been drawing almost exclusively with an ipad and Procreate for the past year or so; it's so easy to draw with that I think I have to give it pretty much full credit for getting me back into drawing.
I tried drawing with a Surface device before but I just couldn't get used to the stroke delay on it; the ipad feels instantaneous in comparison. I think that was a Surface Pro 4, not sure if they've improved since then.

Then I use Photoshop for touching up and laying things out on the PC, I tried out Gimp but I just couldn't get used to the interface.

Very cool, so much detail to get in that armor.

Been working a little on some low poly modeling and texturing, but not much to really show from that yet.
I've also been playing a bit of FFXIV and decided to start drawing from that.


Starting to feel a bit more confident when it comes to sketching out forms, but I need to start trying to focus on taking things past the rough-sketch phase.
