Finally... JUSTICE

One of the all-time great "FUCK YOU" songs that absolutely kicks your ass and makes you regret every sin you've committed in your miserable life. Gotta turn up the volume to painful levels so dople has its full effect.

Most evil match in the contest. This has such a style that it feels painful to vote against, like it's just the objectively wrong move to make, regardless of how much more you like the opponent. It's just sitting there, silently demanding you vote for it with puppy-dog eyes and smooth grooves. I'm sorry my son. Guess this is what I get for not needing to support Xaaaci.

weight of the world but two points harder on the scale of rock hardness

The first of many funny "ok boomer" responses, i'm sure

Robocop Title reminds me of the MMX ending theme, but without MMX nostalgia or instrumentation I like. Cosmic Hero is great and it was sad when it got banned.

Xaaci is not a song I would ever want to listen to on its own. It feels like great in-game BGM tho. Wait, Guile's Theme? What a neat new theme for Guile! I like the part at the one minute mark. Reminds me of Mega Man X in a good way.

Going from What Am I Fighting For to this is a real downgrade. Sunjammer doesn't really have anything going on either. Sounds like some dime a dozen arcade song.

Sunjammer Midnight Special

Title Theme (3.8 - 64th place) / Cosmic Hero (4.6 - 61st place)
XaaaCi. (7.5 - 33rd place) / Strange Sunset (8.7 - 16th place)
Connexion (8.3 - 20th place) / Sunjammer Midnight Special (9.7 - 4th place)

Finally we're getting to the best new music in Bracket D! Sunjammer Midnight Special... It does seemingly little things, but those little things sound so AMAZINGLY good to me...! (as a result, it's no wonder somebody already called it "a dime a dozen") Problem is, it's hard to really describe what's going on... but it's like you got the predictable parts, and then you got these unpredictable prog moments where everything just changes (the metric feel, the ostinatos go away, etc.).... like 0:20 - 0:23 is one of my favorite things ever, even if it's still 4/4 there (crazy bass stuff). The insertions sound almost random, but they're done so tastefully.... the parallel fifths at one spot, the triplet subdivisions mixed in another spot...

Also, yep, Yoshitaka Hirota loves his nasty scary sound effects doesn't he? Certain parts (like the end) sound unmistakably like Shadow Hearts. (that reminds me.... 3 Karma: Decisive Battle, one of my failed nominations this year, only getting 5 noms, so CLOSE to getting in... oh, well, I don't like that track as much as my other noms, anyway) Strange Sunset... those piano chords, man... this mix of jazz I can really get behind!! As for Connexion... gives me such a Super Metroid ocremix "Kindred Night" vibe with the choice the way the percussion is done (and the meter/tempo)... I love Kindred Night! Even some of the lyrics are similar in character...

RoboCop Title Theme is this serene little piece with "cool chiptune sounds", but the melody here is way too simple. Like, the whole appeal behind this is "whoa this sounds cool on a GameBoy", but even for that there's better stuff. And also, why is a song about ROBOCOP so calm what is this I don't even.

Cosmic Hero gets into VGMC pretty often, and honestly, each year I can't even remember what this sounds like until I put it back on. The synthwave beat is decent, but usually there's something better in each year.

gotta vent out my NEGATIVITY alrighty then

---

AAAAAAAAAAAAA XaaaCi is my 2nd favorite song in the whole contest!! Hot damn this is some of the craziest shit I've ever heard! I LOVE these sort of edgy nihilistic lyrics placed upon dark chanting that just gives off this feeling of the end of the world, and the way this mixes chaotic dissonance with bits and pieces of pretty melodies is nothing short of amazing. That part at around 5 minutes in sends a chill down my spine every time I listen to this. Easy 10/10 song here and I really wish there was more music that sounded like this (seriously if you guys know any send me some lol)

Oh hey, Guile's Theme but not the overused meme one. I actually really like this song too, but it managed to find itself in the least close match of the day (I wouldn't be too sad if XaaaCi. loses to something like this though)

---

Oh hi Haloweak, this composer also has some pretty neat tunes in Muse Dash. Girls Frontline is one of those games with better music than it deserves, but this is some really pretty singing here.

I can't get over how goofy of a video game name "Caravan Boomer" is. Looking over the composer information for this game @ https://vgmdb.net/album/109337 this is one hell of a lineup lol. I feel this MSX2 FM synth actually fits Shnabubula's style pretty well. Close match here.

Title Theme

Sunjammer Midnight Special

-(sometimes i feel incredibly socially isolated because of my sense of humor: it is actually painfully specific. as much as i lean into the goofy things i say or do or enjoy, i find it difficult to laugh at most things that have intent to be funny. it also used to be incredibly rare to find the brand of things that actually speaks to me: absurdism/surreal humor, presented in non-cliche ways, or at least the ways i personally read as such. I had my home in the ytp community pretty deep for about 10 years and the more esoteric directions of that realm fed this side of me for a while. but one of the first popular-ish things I ever saw that properly defines what i can connect with on this topic: Dilbert 2 (and dilbert 3. which has a beautiful cover of robocop gb title theme in the background of it). These days i'm more into PilotRedSun especially his newer stuff, but nothing quite fulfills the niche as well as those two creators. There's a reason for it i think, it doesn't call attention to its intent. It's obviously "intentionally bad", obviously funny, but it's not like "this is the joke: right here, here it is" spelled out to me. It's just a surreal world with entirely different rules that i can get immersed in, but rules that are SO absurd that it's impossible for me to avoid laughing. (i was talking with kao about, in a way this lines up with my taste in music, preferring unexpected traits, and indirect expression of emotion or intent. things that don't make sense, but somehow "work" to evoke their emotion in the end)
~~~~~
I'm thankful that in recent times this category of humor's become more prominent. I'm admittedly a bit irked that some reduce the idea of this sort of thing down to "memes" (especially because memes as a concept of being about repetition of the same ideas, get in the way of "unexpected nonsense"), but i am thankful that these days i can just talk to certain people in entirely nonsequitors, nonsensical image edits that abuse compression artifacts for no reason. and around the right people, this will click with them, they will think "sweet bro and hella jeff" "dilbert 3" "pilotredsun", instead of looking at me like i am a crazy man from another planet. Dilbert 2's popularity was one of the first things to make me feel like there was a place for me and that i was no longer alone, at a time when it was once incredibly hard to find things as fucked up and nonsensical as it. thank you chef boyardee
~~~~~
needless to say, it's hard for me to separate how important this track is to me from cboyardee's cover of it in dilbert 3...i REALLY really like cboyardee's arrangement, it highlights the bittersweet emotional element of the chord loop, makes the melody feel a lot more alive (and the etherealness of the dilbert version contrasts the crude art of gritty bloody office landscape that makes the world of dilbert 3, which is perfect for amplifying the surrealness of the video). I hear these things in the Game Boy version, but it's very hard for me to feel the same emotional intensity from it. dunn's version is a lot clunkier, the chord arpeggios mechanical rather than soft and floaty chord pads like the dilbert3 version. It's probably not quite the right direction to have gone from the angle of loving the dilbert 3 version first, rather than loving the gb version on its own first. I still enjoy it, absolutely love the chord progression and melody, but it's kinda like the ff9 song from yesterday, i love the composition but find the arrangement too mechanical. i would much prefer to listen to a cover, and only get into this if i can imagine what a cover sounds like of the tune. good thing i know just where to find a cover of this song that i unquestionably love)-

-[oh yeah it's the cool synth wave song; i don't find this particularly memorable (even though i say all the time that that doesn't matter) but i like the mood of the composition and texture of the timbres. one thing i'm noticing is that simpler harmonies feel thicker than they are and i almost feel like that's by association, that that's what music that sounds like this should have...so then i put things that aren't there in]-

-{i didn't expect to be voting robocop title until i thought about it yesterday, but in hindsight i shouldn't be surprised. beyond the personal emotional attachment i have to the track, i really do adore its chordal/melodic content. even if this isn't my favorite version, that aspect is still there, and i can still hear it. it's great. difficult match}-

-----

-(i feel like when i first heard yoshitaka hirota shadow hearts songs in vgmc i was like "this is bad because i dotn't like vocals and the metallic sounds are too harsh" but now i think that i was just being stupid and i LOVE shad9ow hearts music and my favorite songs are either the harsh yoshitaka hirota ones or the even harsher ryo fukuda ones....it's crazy this composer worked on sonic shuffle...!
~~~~~
1:32-1:45 is probably one of my absolute favoorite moments of any section of any song int he contest by far and part of it is because i find it so hard to even tolerate listening to. and like, i spent like a decade of my life watching the loudest possible ear splitting volume glitch videos every day and shit. I LIKE harsh, and this song is too harsh for me. i can't handle it, it hurts, it feels like someone is scratching parts of my body off, it legit is hard to stand. and i LOVE it. I love every moment of this fucking song, especially the parts i hate the most. Immediately after 1:45 there's some legit really cool layered industrial percussion intersecting with each other in CRAZY @_@ ways that i find very fun too. this song is so DARK, i always say i like things that feel dark. 4:00 is fucking insane metric modulation to shift tempos to the new tempos (actually it's probably not really and i probably just interpreted the tempo as being different as what it was because i am so silly) and reminds me of the later bits of "Time Paradox" from super monkey ball banana splitz which makes sense because apparently Yoshitaka Hirota wrote music for that game and probably that specific song in hindsight. the fadeout of the insane distorted drums at 6:40 to the end is one of my favorite parts
~~~~~
i think the mildly more important aspect of this track for me is the very specific aesthetic; its EXACTLY THE ZONE I WANT. and i do feel this way about the darker hymnos in general, the vocals give it just enough exotic world music character, but when electronic elements dominate the track and REALITY BREAKS and everything is in the glitched up darkness zone of floating fragments of the earth in the void of tv static consuming all items it's just so good. just enough rock, just enough prog, just enough spicy harmony, just enough actually /beautiful/ moments. It's so difficult to find music that hits these perfect balances for me, and although i've dug deep enough to know where to look for these examples, i still see the rare finds that touch every corner in one way or another as a beautiful treasure)-

-[strange sunset is EVBERYTHING WRONG WITH BOARD 8, what the fuck are all these painful sounds that are too loud they make me sad : ( why is a woman screaming at me? what did i do wrong : ( ( ( (( ( ( . street fighter exhimo45amtohi has the really cool super sweep jazz fusion. songs with the chill chords that i am traumatized by if the song is too much like "the good one that is ' the banger' " from the darkness of punkishmsned himo touch your lbraltm sim socunk the panning on this song is all waykcy . AYaKO SASO IS SO GOOD AT JAZZ FUSION and i agree, it's because of songs like this, and blood vessel of the city, she is always "in the shadow" of shinji hosoe who is more famous by 1% but they are both s o good. honestly i am bad at telling them apart but i think there's things i hear in saso songs i don't hear in hosoe songs which are mainly a rhythmic freedom, which you hear to a degree here. saso's stuff is more "alive" and more feels like it would be playing by the band "dimension" which has fun with tricking you into thinking their erratic hits are playing at specific times vs not or something]-

-{amazing pair...}-

-----

-(connxion is so epic and i wish i could vote for it. 6/8 is cool and cbouncy. SUPER full produced sound design. i like pretty much everything i've heard from girls frontline but i only listened to an arbitrary portion of the ost (well it's not that arbitrary; i focused on the basiscape contributions to it and then the ones that are in vgmc or were otherwise linked to me), but really like i like everything i heard. this does a lot of things i might not like if the instrumentation was different. progressions/melodies i'd cringe at if this was like, a chiptune, but it's not, it's big epic song with cool clicky electronic drums and dramatic vocals : ) and cool whispering and cool strings and cool tense pads in the background that don't change chords even when everything else in the song changes chords. this makes it feel like a DARKNESS (she said the word "darkness" in the lyrics when i typed that word so it felt fitting to type) it feels like the evil hum of a dark machine hlooming in the hbackground ready to eat your thoughts so that ytou become a soulless person whos eyes are the color red)-

-[shnabubula is in my top tier of favorite composers, in this song i'm actually less focused on his composition than usual for him, but actually more enthralled by the sound design. this might seem kinda backwards but i'm really interested in OPLL as a soundchip particularly. I probably place the entire OPL line (including vrc7 as seen in lagrange point) as my "tied favorite soundchip", so that includes this song! But i actually don't consider opll to be commonly used in an interesting way, part of that is it's very hard to! It's one of the most limited fm synth soundchips....arguably THE most limited fm format (the main competitor for "most limited" is VRC7, which is OPLL but with less channels and different sounds, but imo despite being cut down opll, you're still able to layer the entire nes soundchip on top of vrc7 though, so imo opll like this is actually more stifling...which...is cool! THE CHIPTUNE PUZZLE).
~~~~~
OPLL as a format's limits boil down to:
1) you can only play 9 notes at hte same time
2) you can only play one user-defined FM patch at a time, and otherwise have to choose from a list of 15 hardcoded presets if you want more than one sound playing at once.
-------so basically if u want to make a song that is timbrally varied, you have to either carefully place where you use the custom patches in the composition of the music (since you can't play more than one at the same time as each other)...or you can just rely on using the 15 presets in interesting ways. This song does both!!! However there was one other major limit shnabubula had to work with on this game: the song could not take up more than ~4 kilobytes (caravan boomer barely had room to squeeze as much music into the game as it did), which is a huge, huge limitation for something as musically dense as this song.
~~~~~
what's cool about shnabubula's approach to fm is a tendency to never stick to just one patch on a given layer. just jumping all around with repeating the same note but on every repetition having that note be on a different sound. This is all over his FM stuff tho most of the other examples i can think of of such a thing aren't in stuff that's easy to find online at the moment. i can upload/link examples if anyone is curious about other cases i'm talking about.
~~~~~
obviously i still appreciate this compositionally, it has odd time and polymeter, the sorts strange parallel harmony stuff i dig. shnabubula's melodic style can be really addictive too! all extremely "me" things. but the real treat here is FM being used in a way i want FM to be used, that i rarely get to see it be used. i can go on about how it's impressive within the technical limitations, but MORE IMPORTANTLY "it sounds cool", these constantly changing fm patches like every note just sound fucking cool!!! every 16th is a different timbre...vibraphone-like timbres being quite common in the song too which makes me VERY happy
~~~~~
being a homebrew game for a format that has few other methods to make music in said format: this song was written in the very 80s way of being made in a text editor using MML, and you can see the code for it here:
https://f.msxplay.com?id=bd55e405
if this sorta thing interests you in how it works, it's fun to mess with it and see how what changes you make to the text can alter the music

Cosmic Hero was one of my favourite discoveries of this contest, but I still feel a little bad about putting my vote in for it. I'd honestly kill to see what Dunn would pull off with hardware better than the game boy.

Ar Tonelico songs always seem to have a lot going for them, but the problem I have with that is that there's more chance of me not vibing with it. And in this case, it's the static. It is honestly near unlistenable to me, which is a shame because the other six or so minutes of this song fucking rocks. Like really, truly, I enjoyed most of this song more than Strange Sunset, but that one bit really messes with my senses in a way that makes me sad :(

Match 3 is two songs that I genuinely enjoy, but don't feel particularly strong about either way.

Match 2 is so, so painful. And yet that somehow makes XaaaCi even more fitting.

it's unfortunate i have been too lazy to do rankings lately because today's got some ones at pretty noticeable extremes. hopefully once i'm not trying to play 50 videogames(demos) in a couple of days because of steam next fest (actually i've only got 15 downloaded but still)... for now i'll just say i'm mad match 2 happened and strange sunset is almost certainly comfortably in my top 20 for the contest, but i can't even consider voting for it
