why even keep score from throwing those balls through hoops if all it takes to win is to catch the golden snitch?
my wife was explaining to me that a game of quidditch doesn't have a time limit and keeps going unless someone catches the snitch.

I thought it was times tbh?

Winner is the one with most goals but the snitch is insta win.

Edit.
After a search it seems the official rules are:

The object of the game was to score more points than your opponents. Each goal was worth ten points and catching the Golden Snitch was worth one-hundred and fifty points. The game ended when the Snitch was caught or an agreement was reached between the captains of both teams. Some games could go on for many days if the Snitch was not caught (the record, according to Quidditch Through the Ages, was six months, although no one caught the Snitch.)[2]

You can catch the snitch and still lose cause its only worth 150

It happened in the World Cup match they attended in GoF

The snitch awards you 150 points and ends the game. It's the only way to end the game IIRC. Longest game of quidditch went on for 3 months (was said in the books).
In saying that, spoilers for Goblet of Fire it's explained in the books that Krum caught the snitch even though his team lost due to being behind the points because he wanted to end it on his terms

It's incredibly fucking stupid but it's JK.

Well *series spoilers I guess* In book 4, Viktor Krum grabbed the snitch while being over 150 points down, just to make the score less embarrassing.

The truth it, Quidditch is stupid, Rowling made nonsensical rules, on purpose I think. Theres also the theory that the rule made a lot more sense when brooms were slower, so games wouldve taken much longer.

Quidditch doesn't have time limits? I never watched Harry Potter, but I figured it would've run along similar rules as football.

There's a time limit in boxing, quidditch doesn't have a time limit.

Also no, catching the snitch is not insta-win. It gives a lot of points but one can still lose. It was brought up in the book at some point IIRC
Book 1 explains the rules and then it actually happens in book 4.

Catching the snitch ends the game and earns the team 150 points, but iirc this is never mentioned in the movies.

if your team is still down even if you got 150 points, why would you try catching the snitch? even if the other guy got it, you'd still lose. you'd only make your team lose.

Thing is, if your team is down by 150 points, then your team sucks

That's pretty much what happened in Book 4. Krum knew his team wouldn't be able to recover, so he ended it there. They were going to lose either way.

and the shortest game was like a half-second (the snitch flew up the Seeker's sleeve upon release)

the game is supposed to be dumb and 'whimsical'

That's only worth like 150 points or something. They usually win the game when it's caught, but it's not an insta-win. I'm sure someone else already said it, though

Why not just have the snitch be an instant win, but time can run out? It makes no sense to have the game only end when someone catches the snitch.

At one point in the books they mention that if they catch the snitch too early, they could win that particular game, but lose the year-long cup.

which sort of incentivises players to rack up as high of a score each game as possible rather than ending it instantly, but its still a stupid game lol

This is also a series where teachers (and prefects) can award/deduct an arbitrary amount of House Points for whatever reason

this actually becomes a plot point in Book 5 where Malfoy and his cronies are made prefects by Umbridge and of course every house besides Slytherin ended up in the gutter
