I finished Zelda and then lent the game to my friend. He called me up and was describing things I wasn't familiar with. That was when I learned about the 2nd quest.

Simon's Quest is the only one that's just poorly made.

I beat the original Zelda as a kid....by playing it. I have never beat Link's Adventure without save states because the last palace is bullshit, but I did figure out everything without an issue of Nintendo Power and GOT to it as a kid. And people claim that game is broken.

Metroid I never beat cause I got bored of it. Too redundant going up endless chasms.

it's also just a matter of quantity. there weren't many games, and people didn't own tons of games and have huge backlogs like now

most games didn't even have saves, so you just play and memorize the same things from level 1. with save slots you could at least experience new stuff every time you wanted to play and figure out solutions by doing everything possible.

This, I'd imagine. No smartphones no internet no social media, they could completely immerse themselves in the game and spend all day trying to beat it.

yeah, I can only speak for myself but I'd be lucky to get maybe 2 games a year

there's also the fact that many of today's games are like 200+ hour slogs that take forever to finish

Morph Ball is right at the beginning. Go all the way right and down for Super Missile iirc, return to the first shaft & up left for Longshot, iirc.

yep

Then keep exploring the right side of the area for E tanks & the MorphBomb. Then I tend to take out Ridley in Norfair first (down and right again) So I can grab Jump Boots & snag Varia on the way to Kraid. This can be accomplished very quickly. I have a rough outline of the game in my head. Its easier to do if Im playing it lol

You can snag the Ice Beam on the way to the bombs

even though he's officially the 2nd boss, I guarantee most people take on Ridley first

his lair is right below Norfair and that area has tons of missle pickups, and the Hi-Jump Boots, so it's just more convenient to do him first

also, Kraid and his lair are way tougher to get through

Yeah, even though I gave up on Metroid I did make it to Kraid, never Ripley.

But if there's some strategy where beating Ripley first is better, I wouldn't know. Metroid didn't have my attention until SNES, for the reason TC elaborated on. Too damn repetitive.

In Fusion, the only part I really get lost at is the shaft you need the SpeedRun item for around where you get the Ice Missiles. And Im not so great with the final bosses. The only part that really gets me about Super Metroid is Draygon & the water level. Ridley tends to beat me up a little too.

I did ridley before kraid (though I never actually finished the game). honestly, NES metroid's map design is appaling, though I can't totally blame them since I'd guess some of it is technical limitations. so many rooms are near-copies of each other and everything just looks the same

Zelda 1-2
Mega Man 1-2-3

When we say we burnt every bush we meant it literally. Yes it took days to get through it all but we did. We would make paper maps recording our progress and compare notes with our friends. The same thing happens today it's just that instead of 4-5 kids it's the collective thousands in a single community documenting everything into a wiki

The first quest of Legend of Zelda can be beaten through trial and error, perseverance, skill, etc.

The second quest is borderline impossible without assistance. There's a power upgrade that you need to realistically stand a chance and it's hidden behind an invisible wall in the far corner of the overworld. It's the only invisible doorway in the overworld map and it's the only one that is off center.

The game might as well ask you to punch in a ten digit code to win. You'll never get it without aid.

Those 2 specifically could be fairly easily done on one's own minus 1 or 2 parts. The only thing I had trouble finding in Zelda was, I think it was the 7th dungeon in the second quest. Hidden in the forest near the old level 8, but in an odd place, but you didn't have the red candle yet so try bush, leave screen, go back, repeat. The kid on the playground that found it was god for a day or two. Then word of mouth takes some edge off. It was common to know to use the silver arrow on Ganon well before you got there. Metroid's only truly obtuse part is the one vertical hallway early on you have to bomb a path through to progress.

Besides, you think those are bad, try early RPGs. Dragon Warrior, Final Fantasy, Might and Magic, Phantasy Star. Games where even the goal is unclear without a guide.
