Never held office, still made history

Wow, I was real sloppy in my first attempt at this topic.

I tried to focus on more positive influencers, rather than someone like Jefferson Davis. And yes, I know Hoover was a dick.

I mean, technically he was a president...!

I think this has to be Hamilton or MLK, depending on if "could have potentially been president" is a factor or not.

Well, he was an American who was a president, but never an American president.

Amerigo Vespucci

You could correctly argue that he was not American, but without him, nobody else would be either.

Well without King George III there might not be America either.

I would feel bad that there are two names in the poll I don't recognize, but one was the Harper's Ferry guy and the other apparently wrote detective books.

Is the question who is most influential or who made the most history? Because those aren't at all the same thing. For instance, Henry Ford was incredibly influential on American industry, but not quite as important in terms of the history books. The answer's probably Ben Franklin regardless, but I figured I'd ask for clarity's sake.

Voted MLK after a bit of thought between him and Hamilton.

Susan B. Anthony/women suffragists deserve to make the list as well IMO. John Marshall probably deserves to make the list as well.

More than a chance. He was a bit of a celebrity to them thanks to his studies on electricity.

Franklin did so many different things I find it hard to believe the answer could reasonably be anyone else. Not that those other people are unworthy of being in the discussion, mind you, but they're in a battle for second place.

i feel like it could be one of the insanely wealthy uber-capitalists in the 19th century that monopolized things, but i'm not sure whether they were influential or just following the invisible hand of economics

i'm thinking like rockefeller or whatever
