Board 8 > Is the best boss battle of all time from a Metal Gear game?

It seems like I see Metal Gear on most top 10 lists regarding boss battles. So I wanted to put the series against everything else. Any game with Metal Gear in the title counts.

Sorry, but best "boss battles" go to Monster Hunter, No More Heroes, and some Souls games.

Gonna go with Bloodborne's Lady Maria here, but that doesn't mean MG doesn't have some phenomenal boss fights of its own.

That's just me personally though. I've never really been a fan of long drawn out boss fights which has become more of the common trend since the early 2000s. It kind of wears out its welcome and makes them all run together in my mind. I think they are more memorable and exciting when it's short, but difficult.

Yes and no.

If I told you my favorite boss fight came from Persona 5 Royal or Devil May Cry 3, and you told me your favorite came from Metal Gear Solid, you would not be wrong. They're incredible boss fights especially the final battles of 3 and 4.

They might not be your game. But if you've beaten or even watched MGS3 or MGS4's final battles, would you say that they could qualify as among the best in gaming?

I don't think we share the same notion of objective quality. Best I can do for you is a respectful recognition of their place in the culture, although if you want my honest opinion I think MGS4's final battle is comical

There are a few contenders at least. It also depends on how you value it, like is it just gameplay or the scene surrounding the boss battle.

Nah, I can appreciate bosses like The End, The Boss, MGS4 Final Battle, and the entirety of Revengeance but I'll still be taking the high-end Soulsborne bosses like Artorias, Fume Knight, Abyss Watchers, Maria, (Bloodborne Spoilers) Gehrman, (Dark Souls 3) Friede, Gael or over in Sekiro with Lady Butterfly and Owl (Father) personally just for a start. A lot of emotionally powerful JRPG ones as well if we stray away from the gameplay side of things and just focus on atmosphere/impact.

• Metroid Prime 2 is noticeably absent from this discussion. The Torvus Bog boss (the giant insect in the poison pool), Emperor Ing, and Dark Samus all rank high IMO.
• MGS is loaded with great bosses as well. Sniper Wolf would probably be my favorite from a gameplay standpoint. The Boss from a story/emotion standpoint.
• The Elevator Crab fight from Castlevania: Order of Ecclesia has stuck with me for well over a decade. Easily one of the best Vania bosses from a gameplay standpoint. Props to Legion in SotN for the WTF factor.
• Ghot from Majora's Mask is fun and unique because of the Goron gimmick.
• RE7's Garage Fight and Chainsaw Fight were insanely fun (though admittedly clunky). RE3 Remake battle with Nemesis on the rooftop was epic (assuming you played on Hard mode)

Castlevania: Lords of Shadow has an amazing intro fight as well. Early 2010s Konami had that down pat.

Well, if you're not a fan of the series, the final battle of MGS4 probably does come across as comical. It's straight up fanservice in almost every way, but that's what I love about it.

The answer is probably no. I think MGS is particularly well known because shooters and stealth games aren't exactly known for their boss fights. Plus, the ratio of unique or grand boss fights in MGS is fairly high.

Overall, Shadows of the Colossus was the best overall, but both the Ocelot fight at the end of 4 and Psycho Mantis were fantastic.

Actually, thinking about it, there were a ton of really great MGS bosses; Fatman, Vamp, Metal Gear on Metal Gear fight etc

Maybe from a lore/character perspective, they're top tier. From a pure "fun" standpoint, I can't say that's the case.
