While 2020 wasn't the best year for anyone, it was especially tough for United States Postal Service employees as the agency said thousands of mail carriers were attacked by dogs in the past year. The Postal Service announced on Thursday that more than 5,800 employees were attacked by dogs in 2020. "From nips and bites to vicious attacks, aggressive dog behavior poses a serious threat to postal employees and the general public," the service said in a statement. The Postal Service also announced which cities and states had the most dog attacks, with Houston topping the list of cities and California being the state with the most attacks. The statistics were announced ahead of National Dog Bite Awareness Week, which began on Saturday and goes through June 18.

Here's the list of top 10 states and number of attacks:
  1. California, 782
  2. Texas, 402
  3. Ohio, 369
  4. New York, 295
  5. Pennsylvania, 291
  6. Illinois, 290
  7. Michigan, 253
  8. Florida, 198
  9. New Jersey, 179
  10. Virginia, 169

Nobody uses their spray cuz we dont want to hurt the dogs even if it means we get hurt by them.

That top 10 list is basically just the US states ranked by population.

Worthless list.

None; they were all Chihuahuas.

The real numbers are much higher than this-- one of my best friends is a mailman & he says it's a constant thing, just most of the time the dogs aren't enough of a danger to bother with.

Florida's relatively low on the list for its population. Florida must be better than other big states at training dogs. Or they have fast mailmen

Yeah, that sounds about right, Here in Texas nobody gives a fuck about making sure their dog doesn't bight the letter carriers or doesn't get out of the gate and if their dog bit someone "Well you must have antagonized him/her! my dog is a sweet angel that would never hurt anybody!" And if you dare tryy to defend yourself the owner will either shoot you or assault you

I work for Australia Post. My delivery round is done on a small motorcycle. Last year I hit a dog that ran out from an open gate. I fell off, but no serious injury.
I have been chased by dogs many times.

All of them

one time the postal driver couldn't deliver any mail because the dog got out when i was living in the boonies as a young adult. somehow the dog didn't manage to go onto the highway (still couldn't get mail delivered that day).

it had to be put down because it attacked another dog (and put down i don't mean with "putting to sleep"). i wasn't there as it happened.

note: not my current dog. it was the one before that.

Some of those lazy fucks also use any dog as an excuse to get out of work. Ive had my mail lady leave a could not deliver due to dog note on days when I was home and kept my dog in the house specifically because I was expecting a package. And Im not talking about an isolated incident, this happens at least half a dozen times a year.

I do understand I have a larger (50-60lb) dog that barks and could be scary to a stranger. But at this point she just assumes hes out 100% of the time and never pulls in the driveway to honk or anything, even on the weekends.
