The Southern Ocean is now being recognized, along with the traditional four of the Atlantic, Pacific, Indian, and Arctic Oceans.

https://www.nbcnews.com/science/science-news/national-geographic-adds-5th-ocean-world-map-n1270318

National Geographic announced Tuesday that it is officially recognizing the body of water surrounding the Antarctic as the Earth's fifth ocean: the Southern Ocean.

The change marks the first time in over a century that the organization has redrawn the world's oceanic maps, which have historically only included four: the Atlantic, Pacific, Indian and Arctic Oceans.

The Southern Ocean has long been recognized by scientists, but because there was never agreement internationally, we never officially recognized it, National Geographic Society geographer Alex Tait told the magazine.

Its sort of geographic nerdiness in some ways, Tait said. Weve always labeled it, but we labeled it slightly differently [than other oceans]. This change was taking the last step and saying we want to recognize it because of its ecological separation.

The Southern Ocean stretches from Antarctica's coastline to 60 degrees south latitude, excluding the Drake Passage and the Scotia Sea, according to the National Geographic. The newest body of water makes it the second-smallest, after the Arctic.

Its news to me. I only new of the Atlantic, Pacific, Indian and Arctic. Although as a kid, I always thought it was weird that the north has the Arctic Ocean but the south didnt have anything.

Although Id have thought it would be named the Antarctic Ocean. Southern Ocean sounds bland.

Have you seriously never heard of National Geographic? When I was in school all the classrooms had them. The first boobies I ever saw were big flappy aboriginal boobies in one of those magazines. I think the teacher caught us looking at it and threw the magazine away lmao

I'm fairly certain the southern ocean has been at least somewhat recognized for a long time, it's just that now Nat Geo is recognizing it as well. Tbh, I wouldn't be surprised if they recognized it previously but they randomly decided to start making a big deal about it.

Part of me thinks National Geographic is recognizing the Southern Ocean now so they can use it as (one of several) measuring sticks when discussing climate change, as the Southern Ocean stands to expand a good deal as Antarctica shrinks.

Antarctica isn't a giant land mass it's all ice.

If you melt all the ice underneath it's just a sparse archipelago with the largest island somewhere around the same size as Japan.

I know theres various approximations as to what Antarctica would look like if you removed the ice, but I dont think any of the ones Ive seen show it as an archipelago.

Edit: Okay, maybe if you melt all the ice an account for the heightened sea level?
