My ladder is 2 too short I need to clean out my gutters. Badly.

Shit.

There should be some sort of ladder trade up policy.

It's about 12-13' or so to get up there... But the mess that's up there is going to be pretty hard to get out with a vacuum. We have a tree right over both sides of the house, and there's just so much green waste. Leaves from last fall, seeds, and a fuckload of branches. It's a job to be done by hand unfortunately.

Just get on the roof and clean the ladders from there? Bring a light garbage can up with you to throw the crap in?

So... how am I actually supposed to get ONTO the roof when the ladder doesn't actually reach? Let alone get back down...

I thought you meant the ladder just couldnt reach certain areas of the roof. If it can't reach any of it, sorry I was mistaken in my assumption

Nah, the corner you see there is the lowest part of my roof. Technically I can get slightly higher if I start on my deck, but it only adds about 1 foot. Not enough for me to be able to get onto the roof. Otherwise this would all be moot...

Damn, that is a lot of trees directly over the house. You've probably got to get up there multiple times a year to keep those clear. So glad I moved from a house that had a ton of trees surrounding it, to one without a whole lot. Makes upkeep and lawncare quite a bit easier.

It's 2 very large trees. I prefer them, because they help keep the sun off the house. But I can definitely see not liking it. I had to pick up a shitload of branches off the ground today. Heh.

Borrow or rent a truck. Back the truck up next to the house. Set up the ladder in the bed of the truck. Problem solved!

Get two ladders and set them up a short distance apart. Place boards between the two ladders to create a platform. Set up a third ladder on the platform. Problem solved.

Don't actually try these. The truck one might be safe, if the bed is stable enough, the ladder legs have enough traction, and you chock the wheels, but the second one is just a joke and is stupid dangerous.

There are screens you can get that will keep the leaves out of the gutter so you don't need to clean them.

Don't bother with LeadGuard gutters, however. We bought those and I still find maple pods and leaves clogging up the outflow pipes, they're extremely difficult to clean out, they don't work very well in extremely heavy rain, and in winter they accumulate icicles.

They're not terribly expensive, about $2 for 3 feet at Menards. But you have to install it yourself (which means you still need a ladder)

I don't worry about it that much. Though I was working out of state at the time so I just let it do what it does and rot in the yard. Good for the lawn.

If you have a leaf blower you can get this wacky gutter cleaning kit and just blow all the crap out.

It's about $55, and if you don't have a leaf blower, they run about $30-50 for electric and $60-150 for battery-powered.

This won't help TC, but the best ladder I've ever used is the Werner Podium. The top step is a large flat platform and the rails extend up past the top then wrap around as a guardrail. You can stand comfortably at the top and face any direction safely. The ladders are made of fiberglass, so they're safer to use around electricity than aluminum, and they're rated at 300 pounds (375 for their top end models). They're available in up to 14 foot. They're a wee bit more expensive, but I think it's worth it. It's the only ladder I've ever felt 100% comfortable working on.

Yea, I have one of those same ladders. Nice when you want to get on top of a one-story roof, useless otherwise. Thankfully my second story gutters get almost no leaves due to the trees in my area being mostly ash and maple. If there was an oak tree around though, forget it.

Ladders are dangerous and people get hurt on them frequently, so the manufacturers have to employ a team of lawyers to defend themselves from lawsuits, plus they have to carry liability insurance. That's why ladders are expensive.

Its actually quite a bit more than $20 with mileage and insurance. The adding the cost of a ladder rental on top of it it almost becomes the same price as just buying one.

Lean it against the house and clean them from there??? Looks like an easy reach to me. Obviously a taller ladder would be beneficial to see what you're doing, but your situation does not look overly difficult. Unless there're some other areas where the ground dips and the ladder doesn't quite reach that high.

also just buy an aluminum ladder (cheap) if they're within the weight limit. Way lighter and cheaper. Not as much load limit, but just fine for a person.

This is what Im planning on doing, but its not as simple as it may seem. I have to tilt the ladder out further for stability and then try to reach up. Ill be working blind and above my head basically.
