I'm really tempted to take the latter especially since medical bills can eclipse a million. But the money has so much more use. If I could get away with eating as little as possible while remaining a healthy weight (including ceasing eating all together) I might consider the other option.

If it includes the ability to never get poisoned or injured no matter what you eat, I could probably make more money with the ability.

Plus what's the actual money? Does the lack of the other comma signify anything?

Mo' money, mo' problems

$1M isn't enough to retire with early on and the sudden influx of wealth will just make you a target for beggars and thieves.

Meanwhile, the ability to eat cheap/quick food and/or "delicious but bad for you" food and get the same nutritional benefits / lack of drawbacks as someone starving themselves on expensive and/or unappealing "super foods"? Fuck yeah!
Only real downside is if you have a spouse/kids/family you live with. They still need to eat smart, and that's gonna be tough/awkward if you're trying to maximize the benefits for yourself.

At face value level I'd go with the million dollars because I'm not worried about health issues and have no desire to eat like a glutton.

But since this apparently is super power level "eat literally anything in any amount and be fine" I'd be a fool not to take it. The first thing that came to mind is that I could eliminate nuclear waste and probably make a ton off government contracts doing so.

Anyone who picks the money clearly has never had severe GI issues while traveling abroad.

I didn't even have to think about this. If I had an iron stomach I could eat whatever and not have to worry about getting fat or sick. There are so many foods I hold off on because I'm concerned about putting on weight. There are so many times I have gone to a tropical country and had terrible diarrhea and vomiting.

Fuck a million dollars I'll make that at some point in my life.

Pfffffft, eating. There's the advantages of being able to eat whatever I want which is beneficial in the here and now and could be a life saver in a survival or SHTF situation, then there's doing crazy food challenges for e-fame which might very well be worth more than a million dollars.

The money for sure.

You can withdraw about 30k indefinitely which is a bit under the median American income. If you wait 10 years you can likely be withdrawing closer to (but not quite) the median household income indefinitely without adding additional savings. Combined with what you already have invested, youre looking pretty good.

Its enough money to let you pursue pretty much anything you want unless you have a super expensive hobby, and if you have a super expensive hobby then it lets you choose a job where you can do that hobby for your income.

I wouldnt retire today if I had 1M, but Id easily be able to. Most likely youd have way more money in the future, even if you retired today with 1M and withdrew 30k a year.

No one is saying a million dollars isn't a lot and if you need the money then sure, go for it. I'm making around $65k per year and am living comfortably. There isn't anything I need or want right now that I couldn't pay for, or at least be willing to wait for. A million dollars would certainly be a nice chunk of change but it's not really that important in the long run for me.

An iron stomach though...me not having to worry about eating certain foods when I travel and never having to worry about becoming fat would be absolutely incredible and life changing.

Its less about hard work and dedication and more just buying the right degree program and willingness to move to where the job is. Youre paid more based on degrees than skills in many careees. Its probably not a happy path if your interests dont align with one of the common high paying degrees. Then theres friends and family to consider also.

100k is low enough still theres a recipe to get there though in the USA, but whether its worth it even financially is an entirely different issue. Its definitely outside of the norm though.

I feel it just puts you in an awkward spot where you still need to work but now you're the "rich person" that sticks out from the group. I make decent money now in a job I don't hate and a million at least until the bubble bursts, just buying a house would eat up a huge chunk of it.
Meanwhile, health is priceless (or if you live in the U.S. w/ our health care, it does have a price and you hope to never discover what it is) and strict dieting is really tough. If I can avoid all the health pitfalls of a non-perfect diet while getting the optimal nutrients w/ the freedom to eat anything that's tasty or cheap or quick and easy, that's amazing. That's just plain better than money, at least to a certain extent that's way above $1M.

that anyone can get to where you are with hard work and dedication

...technically just about anybody can. Most people won't, but that's not because they weren't ever capable of it. You can look at the absurd number of people who make six-figures and reached it through a variety of means to see that it's doable. And most angry posts about "oh, this can't happen!" are just shitty attempts to justify limiting beliefs.

If you want it and you're willing to put the work in, you can make it happen eventually. I wouldn't necessary say everybody could make seven figures since that's a bit harder, but if you're doing something you can easily scale up, it's possible. If you're relying on a salary/bonuses to hit that number, that's not as likely. However, even a salary can get you to six figures.

Meanwhile that ability -- which could make you millions -- is something that the super-rich would pay a fortune for.

A million is a lot more money than most people will ever have at their disposal at once, and suddenly getting that much is clearly going to be life-changing, but it's still "not that much" in the sense that it doesn't mean you'll never have to worry about money again. Depending on where you are, that might not even be enough to buy a decent house, let alone a fancy one while still having enough left for any other luxuries.

Basically, you're doing pretty well if you've got a million to your name, but you've still got a ways to go before you can really be rich. This is part of why so many lottery winners blow their winnings so quickly: They think of a million dollars as being an incredible amount of money, not realizing just how quickly it can disappear if you aren't sensible about it.

The majority lottery winners are idiots for sure, as are people that don't think they can retire on a mil.

No one is forcing you guys to live in downtown east coast/west coast areas where you can't even buy a house for that much.

Assuming the million offered here is tax free initially, 8% on a mil invested is 80 grand, and even the laziest of investors can make 8% a year in stable years. Let's say you don't let it sit and instead take it out and it's taxed as income instead of long term capital gains, so you're left with maybe 63k after taxes

My wife and I combined make less than that now after taxes (we clear like 58k),and we live EXTREMELY comfortably in Central Florida and never want for anything and buy whatever we want and get annual Disney passes and take at least 2 vacations a year.

Maybe you guys... Just suck with money?
