It's not like anonymity is a new concept. Lots of people used to write opinion articles under pseudonyms so that people didn't know who they were. The Internet has just made it easier for your average person to do the same.

That said, I try to avoid social media since it is basically millions of versions of your drunk uncle telling you why the government is stealing your thoughts with weather balloons and satellites.

Are you a coward if you say stuff that would get you punched in real life... ...over the Internet?

What if they also say it irl? >_>

While I'm guessing the implication to this stance is that people wouldn't say that same thing irl because it might be dangerous (which itself is inherently problematic), keep in mind that you also have people who believe something but never fucking say it all. So then the question becomes would somebody be more of a coward if they didn't say certain things offline or if they just didn't some things at all.

Otherwise, keep in mind that any opinion, no matter how innocuous, could be met with violence and the fact that somebody might react violently to something in no way invalidates an opinion. The opinion either stands or doesn't stand on its own merits.

What I type on the internet I'd actually say in real life so no. If I get punched then I get the added bonus of getting someone done for assault. "This person said mean words to me!" doesn't justify physical violence.

stuff that would get you punched in real life

I'm not sure this is even a thing anymore. We're now multiple generations deep into a society that has pushed hard on the idea of violence being completely unacceptable, anti-bullying, and "toxic masculinity" to the point where most people these days are total wussbags. Added to the extremely litigious mindset we've had since the 90s, most people aren't going to punch you no matter what terrible things you say, because they're too passive and awkward and afraid of being sued.

Except in very rare cases, the sort of people who feel entitled to be walking shitbags on the Internet are also completely comfortable being walking shitbags in real life as well, and will rarely get meaningfully called out for it.

That's largely untrue. The left has actually tried to normalize and glorify violence as a solution, including through propaganda like Popper's Paradox. Then on the other side, they don't necessarily buy into left's claims demonizing violence (or, at least, violence that isn't done by them to achieve social and/or political results.

Tell that to the leftists who were citing it to justify physical assault against people who said things they disagreed with.

Im a little quicker to get snappish over the internet. But I've done it in real life plenty too. I work in a prison so it kinda comes with the turf.

Also to those that said mean words dont justify violence. While true I understand why dude punched me when I told him the best part of him ran down his mother's leg and she shoulda swallowed instead.

No i aint that stupid. A ex friend of mine that got a chip on his shoulder cause he couldnt beat me at a soul calibur 3

If I said that to a inmate id deserve to be more than just punched. Worst ive said to a inmate was "stupid people do keep me employed" which was in response to him claiming he was a taxpayer so he wrote my checks

Long story short he finally got on my last nerve. He would always come up and talk down on my profession calling us glorified security guards.
