You're crazy. The US government essentially enables the Mexican cartels and let them do whatever they want and have for decades.

Not even that will put a dent in cartel expenses unfortunately. They've branched out to more legit operations like avocados. Some even have their hands on gold mines.

Yeah I don't know what reality you are living in but it's not this one.

Afghanistan is a stroll through the park with a gentle breeze compared to what fighting the cartels in Mexico will be.

The US military needs to work by themselves in there. You cant really even trust the government either. They have moles everywhere. Give cartels members a weekend to give up. Shutdown all flying/exit for a weekend. And just do a Mexico country wide sweep for all cartel. Those that dont give up and our caught. Life in jail. But something like that will never happen.

without extreme action like that, cartels will never go away

And why is that? The Taliban have better weaponry, are motivated by religious extremism rather than money, and don't fear death.

Sure getting there is easier, but thats the last thing that is. The cartels outnumber the taliban, have more money then the taliban, have better weapons then the taliban, have better training then the taliban, and have absolutely no limits. At all. They kill innocent people just to send a message. A few years ago one csrtel rolled up to a casino and boarded up all the windows and doors and burned everyone in it alive. About 50 people died. This was must because they could. A year or two ago some head of the cartel or his son was being held by the police, so the cartel he was from waged war on and took over the city until he was freed.

Many of the cartel members are former military. They join the military for training then go into the cartels. They also have a lot of former special forces members. Imagine if a seal team decided to form a drug cartel and had no limits as to who they would kill. Think of the damage they could do. All the cartels together literally have a few hundred thousand people. They also control 20% of Mexico. This wouldn't be some simple go across the boarder and flush them out. Think of Vietnam times ten.

No, they don't. The Taliban have RPG-7s, mortars, and everything else the soviet union left behind in Afghanistan.

This is a joke right? Do you know anything about the cartels? Like, at all? The cartels use fucking submarines to smuggle drugs into America, do you honestly think they don't have access to mortars and RPGs? The cartels are worth billions of dollars. By some estimates they are worth more then the entirety of Afganistan itself. Any weapon the taliban has the cartels have better. And more of them. The cartels are fighting the Mexican military, and winning. Do you honestly think they could do so well with shittier weapons then 40 year old soviet hand-me-downs?

I don't see much coming out of this.

  1. 'The US should get involved' - We aren't going to get involved unless we are invited and if we do get involved it will just be back to business in the sense it has been for decades. The US will have the DEA down in Mexico helping out their law enforcement, coordinating use of US intelligence, and spreading money around towards catching cartel leaders. We aren't going to invade Mexico.
  2. The current Mexican president is conflict averse in regards to the cartels.
  3. The underlying issue of the cartels having enough money to corrupt vast numbers of people to their side in Mexico isn't going away any time soon.
