Welcome to the re-branded contest. There was some confusion over the "of the Year" terminology and I realized that saying "of the Year" is not as indicative of the UotY format as I figured. Moving forward, we'll just call it what it is: the hunt for Board 8's favorite video game character.

There was a nominations topic used to determine our field of entrants which I'll be listing in the next post. There were 188 characters that reach a tally of two or greater nominations. Basically if you got a count of two nominations, you are in the field. While I didn't intend for a double nom to mean immediate entry into the contest, the number of nominations wasn't there to allow for a higher barrier to entry, and, given the participation in nominations, I didn't feel throwing over 200 characters into a prelim would be a good idea. Instead we'll roll right into Round 1. To get to 200 characters, I basically used my best judgment on historical GameFAQs contest support and my perceived popularity of the character on Board 8 to select the final 12 entrants from the pool of 156 characters who only had one nomination. In hindsight I think I know a better way to have gone about nominations, but you live and learn and I'm still excited about the contest ahead. Thank you to everyone who nominated and provided input during the process.

As for Round 1, the characters with the highest nomination tallies will be the headliners of each group. Ten characters had 5 or 6 nominations, so they are obvious headliners. 16 characters had four nominations. Six of them reached four nominations without a double nom, so I'll throw them into the headliner pile. That leaves four more characters to choose from the remaining ten. I'll use my best judgment to select the remaining four. I'll post all that information tomorrow. Later this week I'll be drawing all the Round 1 groups. I'll do it live in the contests tab on the Board 8 discord. After that I'll post all 20 groups in this topic. The contest will begin in earnest shortly after.

This topic will be used to post results of each day of the contest as well as be open to any discussion regarding the contest or matches or anything adjacent. It will also be where group and match assignments for each round will be posted once they are fully drawn. I will also field any questions, comments, or concerns as they may arise. I will also be an active participant in the contests tab on the Board 8 Discord should you prefer that forum. In the posts to follow, I will post the official list of entrants as well as the scheduled rounds and a brief description of the rule set used.

For full disclosure, these are the characters I allowed in based on my judgment. The criteria I used was a combination of previous GameFAQs contest seed, previous GameFAQs contest results, and my own perceived popularity of the character and their respective game(s) on Board 8.

Round Formats:

Round One (200 characters)
20 groups of 10 characters. Users vote by assigning +3, +2, +1, -1, -2, and -3 to characters. The bottom three placers from each group are eliminated.

Round Two (140 characters remain, 120 participate)
Winners of each group in Round One receive a bye in this round. Groups from Round One are randomly paired together and the characters from each group face off. Individual matchups are determined by finish in round one. 2v7, 3v6, and 4v5. Users vote by splitting five points between each character in each match. In essence, you are voting 5-0, 4-1, or 3-2. The losers of each match are eliminated.

Round Three (80 characters remain)
All characters participate in Round Three. Characters are randomly put into eight groups of ten characters. For each group, users vote by ranking them +10 to +1. The bottom five point getters are eliminated.

Round Four (40 characters remain)
Also known as the World Cup round. Characters are randomly drawn into ten groups of four characters. Each character faces the characters in their group round robin style. Users vote as they did in Round Two by splitting five points between the two characters in each match. Winning a match gives you +10 to your score. The bottom two in each group are eliminated.

Round Five (20 characters remain)
Also known as Boot and Immune. Characters are randomly drawn into two groups of ten. Each day users vote to boot one character and immune one character. The character with the most immunes at the end of the day moves on followed by the character with the most boots being eliminated. Boots and immunes are aggregate.

Round Six (10 characters remain)
Also known as the Golden Parcel round. Characters are randomly drawn into 1v1 matchups. Users vote by ranking each character participating in Round Six +10 to +1 once. Each day, however, users may award a golden parcel to a character of their choice which gives that character +5 to their score. The loser of each match is eliminated.

Round Seven (5 characters remain)
A nebulous round. This time I've decided to do a round robin format similar to the World Cup round. Each character faces each other once. For each day, users vote by splitting five points among the four users participating that day. However, both matches must receive at least one point. I'm open to tweaking this format as the contest rolls on if I figure out something more interesting (my original idea was using score differential to determine points so winners would get positive points and losers would get negative points, but that seems like it would snowball quickly, which maybe that kind of chaos would be interesting who knows that's why I'm keeping this open to change). The bottom two placers are eliminated.

Finals (3 characters remain)
Users vote by giving one character +1 and one character -1. The winner is Board 8's favorite video game character.

I chose Goro Majima, Phoenix Wright, Miles Edgeworth, and Princess Zelda from the batch of characters with four nominations that got there by way of double nomination. Majima, Phoenix, and Edgeworth I chose because I wanted to avoid them ending up in the same group with either each other (Phoenix and Edgeworth) or their in-game counterpart (Majima and Kiryu). Zelda headlines because she's Zelda.

I'll do the draw either this afternoon or tomorrow afternoon. Round 1 probably starts on Saturday.

I can if it's important to you. I was going for consistency within the franchise. Ryu and Vega don't have last names and I generally don't see Street Fighter characters recognized with them. Of course I know very little about Street Fighter in general, so if this is a sticking point I'm happy to oblige.

Fair enough, I dont feel too strongly one way or another.

The only generic pokemon being Spinarak is hilarious.

I'm okay with most of these being left out. I don't think the point is to mimic the actual contest as much as possible. I did nom Vyse and Maya so it sucks that they didn't get a second but whatever.

CATS is a glaring omission obviously

The lack of Persona love was surprising to me, but I guess I contributed to that since I love the modern Persona series but didn't nominate anyone. No character from the series had more than one person nominate them. Those that made it in either were given a bolded nom or, in the case of Yu Narukaimi, allowed in on my discretion. Honestly, if Ganondorf or Princess Peach had received a single nomination, I most likely would've chosen one of them over Yu. He was among my final cuts.

this is why I think having baseline "assumed to be included" characters is good for a contest like this. people don't want to waste their noms for famous characters, but they want them to be in anyway.

IDK, does anyone really care enough about Peach to miss her absence? I think you can argue that it's good for there to be no (or very few) auto-locks based on fame alone.

I think having characters with fame is a good barometer within a contest. Like we'll see here shortly, many characters will place ahead of Mario from Group 3. I don't think that's Mario being unpopular so much as an example of characters Board 8 likes as a community more than general public would.
