Texas joining the race for most atrocious voter suppression bill:

https://twitter.com/LinaHidalgoTX/status/1398700044036063243

https://twitter.com/marceelias/status/1398792032311726084

https://www.texastribune.org/2021/05/29/texas-voting-restrictions-bill/

  • Makes it easier to overturn an election. You simply need alleged fraud and the election challenger no longer needs to show that fraudulent votes resulted in changing the outcome.
  • Allows partisan poll watchers "free movement" in a polling place and makes it a crime for the poll workers to interfere.
  • Ends Souls to the Polls by prohibiting voting on Sundays... before 1 PM.
  • Ends drive-thru and 24-hour voting, which had been disproportionately used by minorities
  • Restricts vote-by-mail
  • Makes voter registration harder when TX was already one of the more difficult states
  • Makes it harder for people with disabilities to qualify for vote-by-mail. It had been that you qualified if there existed the "likelihood of needing personal assistance or of injuring the voter's health" but apparently that was too lenient and they turned it into only allowing it if a voter is "not capable" of voting in-person

Texas House and Senate had passed different voter suppression laws. They went into closed-door conference and came out with this - which went beyond what either of the original bills had had. It's also being rushed through like crazy. They came out with this this morning and didn't tell the democrats on the committee or let them see the formal draft of the bill at first. Text only went public today. TX GOP Sponsor literally holds a backdoor meeting without cameras to brief his caucus on it and they're trying to ram it through tonight. Kicked out one of the only reporters from the area and access to electricity for his laptop all so they can ram this through in the middle of the night on a holiday weekend when no one is paying attention.

While the original statement is a bit extreme, it's not really lol worthy unless you're in a bubble, plum.

https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Democracy_Index

The US is ranked 25th globally, considered to be a Flawed Democracy. We've been slowly dropping ever since the index was first created in the mid 00s. For further context, though, we're right behind France and before Portugal, so the dictatorship comment is out of place given the current structure of things.

If these sorts of laws pass, you can bet that we'll be going down! So it's not particularly funny in my book.

Liberals rail against conservative American exceptionalism, then have casual American exceptionalism.

Military power and democracy historically do not go hand in hand. America being #1 in military power and #25 in democracy seems about right. Of course we want to reverse that trend, and some of these laws are worrying, but from an outsider perspective it shouldnt be surprising.

To identify that in the absolute current scope currently, we are not in a dictatorship. We enjoy freedoms that many people in the world lack.

However, if you can understand cause and effect, you'll recognize that laws that are antithetical to democracy would cause our democracy index score to decrease!

I mean, while you could rightfully argue that right-wing voter suppression is nothing new, I think it's a bit naive to overlook the massive acceleration the GOP has taken in anti-democratic rhetoric and policy in the past 5 years.

States across the country are passing laws that are completely eroding the guard rails of democracy at an alarming pace after their actual attempt at crashing through them from the president failed. You've got laws like this Texas one, Georgia, and across the country. (14 states enacting 22 laws as of two week ago and that's enacted. 61 more bills are moving through 18 state legislatures. And all but two states have had them introduced.)

Beyond the actions against voters directly, you also have states like Arizona that stripped their Secretary of State of powers regarding elections for having the gall to deny The Big Lie. As well as other bills that take power from either executive or local officials and place them in the hands of the state legislature (where shocker land means more than people and the GOP has generally gerrymandered themselves into a permanent majority.)

Not to mention that the GOP is trying its hardest to "move on" from the 1/6 insurrection as if nothing happened with no consequences and even gaslighting about it by saying it was "like a normal tour" and "peaceful patriots." And with no consequences and this wink-and-a-nod attitude they're basically inviting for it to happen again just this time it working out for them.

~~~
By the way, update on the Texas bill. It passed the Texas Senate just after 6 AM. Texas House is expected to vote on it later today and then it goes to Abbott who is, of course, expected to sign it into law.
Read post 117 and ask yourself the same thing. Then ask yourself what would happen had Trump done it.
If you are not equally outraged, you are a partisan buffoon and I don't care about your opinion.
Well, for one, you literally didn't even read the thing you're supposedly outraged about, so it's hard to reply to that. Try actually finding out what people were talking about first. There is something people are acting upset over, but it wasn't "oogling a 19 year old" because that didn't happen. It literally was impossible. I'll let you figure out why.
Spoilers: It takes about five seconds of reading, so you may not like it.
Not one comment in here about Biden oogling a 19 year old during a presidential speech.
Amazing.
What you're pretending to be outraged about is supposedly him oogling a 19 year old girl. You likely assumed it was just some random 19 year old girl in the audience because you don't ever read anything.
What actually occurred is that a veteran and her family were sitting on stage during the speech. What he was trying to do, while thanking the family for being there, was comment about the girl, an elementary school aged girl, sitting there very prim and proper and well behaved during the entire speech instead of fidgeting or acting out like kids that age usually do. It came out creepy because he's a rambling old man, which is a separate issue. It wasn't oogling a 19 year old, as there was no 19 year old, and it wasn't "sexualizing" a girl, unless you've got a barrette fetish or something. It was an old man rambling in an attempt to praise a child and the mother who raised them well and, let's be honest, a lot of old men come off creepy as hell these days because society has changed since they were our age.
There's absolutely an issue with the fact that we have a rambling old man as president, but that's a different issue and literally all of the top choices were rambling old men, so it's not a problem that's going to be solved anytime soon, apparently.
EDIT: I can only assume anybody supposedly upset over this has gotten upset any time a grandmother has ever said a little boy was looking/acting like a "little gentleman," too. Damn, horny grandmas!
Yes, because old people have been calling well behaved children "little lady" and "little gentleman" literally forever. It's the latest example in "MAGA morons gotta find SOMETHING to be upset about!"
Atleast, it was.
Now they're "outraged" that Kamala tweeted "Enjoy the long weekend." They've already moved on from this because they weren't actually outraged to begin with.
You probably missed the memo since it contained words.
Another update on the Texas voter suppression/we can overturn elections based on feelings law.
https://twitter.com/lmcgaughy/status/1399210497526874113
TX House Dems succeeded in stopping it for now. They left the state capitol to deny a quorum. Fourth time in TX history such an action was taken. TX legislature had to get it done by tonight for rules reasons.
Unfortunately, Abbott is going to call a special session to get it passed anyway, but it does buy some time until that happens if nothing else.
Not likely.
Texas Senate is 18-13 GOP. House is 83-67.
We can pretend that you "only" need 3 in the TX Senate or 8 or 9 in the House but I'm going to put that down as "lol." It had passed the Senate on a party line vote after they had voted to suspend their rules to ram it through.
