Who would you prefer to be the role model for the next generation of Republican Party leaders?

Trump 50%
Reagan 21%
Haley 6%
George W. Bush 5%
George H.W. Bush 3%
Liz Cheney 2%

lol if Dems dont win 22 and 24, we are legitimately sooooo fucked, and theyre not going to if they dont DO anything.

obviously, trump wasn't better than bush, but i'm desparately trying to take away something positive from that poll >_>

Imagine thinking it wasn't hyper religious in that Trump is now the messiah figure.

Eh...it was close enough to not matter. The modern conservative project is authoritarian and knows it depends on being allied with the authoritarian religious faction. It's obvious that Trump knew this despite not being a "true believer," and moreover there were still plenty of people in power in his admin who bought into it (Barr comes to mind immediately, Miller knew to write plenty of speeches of Trump about it).

Sorry to rain on your parade here but I do think Trump himself was concealing a lot of this!

...fact check please.
...What part?

That vote did happen and the amendment failed 48-49 as recorded (party line, 3 abstentions; but as noted it would have needed 60 votes to pass)

If you mean to ask why did it fail, I think the objection to it was that it would restrict some research into organ transplantation. Reading the text of the amendment there is a boilerplate bit that seems to try to carve out an exception there, but reading the transcription of the Senate leads in support/opposition I think this amendment is a direct response to that recent news out of China where they created an embryo that contained human and monkey cells.

Reading an article on that, it was an international team that was looking into new ways to produce organs for people in need of a transplant (by being able to generate replacement organs, possibly using the recipients' own cells to prevent organ rejection.) There has been some research in this by injecting human stem cells into sheep and pigs to try and see if they can create human donor organs but the article says it hasn't been working and this was another attempt at researching it.

There appears to be some ethics debates around it, which seems understandable - there definitely seem to be a number of points where this could go very bad, and the article describes those possibilities, but I think that's where the opposition to the amendment comes from.

They were less prominent under Trump but the substance never changed. It seems more minor to us now because it was already firmly established. You still have Fox News rerunning the War on Christmas scam and telling people liberals want to attack and dethrone God. Trump didn't need to personally affirm the propaganda as Bush did when it's already firmly in place and working at more local levels.

Also Trump found ways to make religious elements about himself like how he was trying to bill himself as the friendliest President to Israel and shit like that

Even this I less attribute to a Trump phenomenon than the general policy of both parties as they slowly trick us into thinking they are withdrawing US troops while what they are really doing is just privatizing it all to mercenaries. Its been happening slowly under all of them.

i also think that trump definitely TRIED to seem really christian (because lol @ the idea of a republican president not being christian). "look guys, i picked pence as my VP! i'm the friendliest president to israel ever! christians love jews, right?" it just came across very phony - i didn't buy for a second that he gave a flying fuck about christianity. on the other hand, with W, i was always like "yeah, this is totally a guy who knows every letter of the bible by heart."

but yeah, the policies weren't so different, so all of this is pretty inconsequential.

Okay, so, the Senate was expected to vote on the 1/6 Commission today. Now, it's come out that McConnell has enough votes to filibuster it... but then it somehow became an even bigger shitshow.

Okay, so the Senate has two things on its calendar and it has to do them in order. First is the Endless Frontier Act. That's the bill that has come up tangentially here with regarding the NASA/Space discussion as well as the whole "human chimera" thing from earlier in this topic. However those were just amendments to it and it's a larger science focused bill.

It looked to have bipartisan support and cleared an earlier vote with 68 votes... then the Senate entered stall mode and it wasn't clear why. Eventually it emerged that the GOP was like "whoops we lied actually we might not be able to go with this" which, I mean, of course they did. But then it further came out that it appears that what's actually happening is that Ron Johnson is throwing a tantrum because he wants to have an amendment regarding the border wall in this (again, remember, a science bill for the most part.) Furthermore, his amendment was already put up for a vote and was defeated a week ago.

For some schadenfreude here, this has totally fucked up the Senate's vacation plans. Thursday was supposed to be their last day before a Memorial Day vacation. Senators have had to reschedule and cancel flights to deal with this shit. Johnson wanted them to recess for 3 hours to read amendments... again? Rick Scott just went "fuck it" and wanted them to recess until June 7 and start the vacation. Both requests got shot down and they're again forced to work past midnight.

As I write, Johnson is up there spewing trash on the border and immigration. Not sure yet how much time he has but I assume we'll get this vote (and then the 1/6 Commission) super late. Again, the commission is expected to be filibustered but this has all entered even more clown car territory.

Anyway, the GOP stall tactics worked because "of fucking course" and the Senate struck a deal to push Endless Frontier until after the recess.

Currently voting on (beginning debate) on the 1/6 Commission. Will need 60 votes. Currently 45-30.

1/6 Commission "fails" 54-35

Rs voting in favor of it:

Cassidy
Collins
Murkowski
Portman
Romney
Sasse

Update 2: 11 Non Voters:

Blackburn
Blunt
Braun
Burr
Inhofe
Murray (D)
Risch
Rounds
Shelby
Sinema (D)
Toomey

My understanding is that there was a separate vote held prior for "attendance" in which 9 Senators did not vote. So apparently 9 of them (not sure which) just took off. Toomey was one of the 2 who voted in attendance but did not vote on the Commission. Unsure yet who the other is.

Update 3: Toomey releasing a statement that he missed the vote due to a "family commitment" but would have voted in favor of the Commission.

Party split:

Dem + I: 48-0-2
GOP: 6-35-9

Convinced Cassidy might be the smartest of the GOP Senators because he released a statement explaining his yes vote saying that if they kill this commission (where dems caved and gave them everything they wanted) it'll be the Democrats who get to set the narrative.

And I mean, the road here is almost assuredly Pelosi setting up a Select Committee for this which because the House is majority dem would be dem controlled. "Curious" what Manchin's reaction to this is now that we have seen there aren't "10 good people" but I'm not holding my breath.
