its an RPG right? and like other bioware games, is it based on D&D rules where dice is being rolled in the background for damage?

i ask cuz i went up to a dude and unloaded the whole damn assault rifle into him and it barely took off half his shield.

am i supposed to be switching weapons?

Generally you want to use tech skills to bring down a shield, either yours or your squads.

Use skills or smg to get rid of shields.

You need to get rid of their barrier/shield first usually, or use skills to disable them while you pump em full. Some enemies are also tanky in general.

And not really based on DnD in the sense you're thinking.

learn to detonate skills. become a biotic god.

It's a shooter game. Your bullets all hit; you need to use other skills meant for bringing down the shields (like overload).

but since im soldier, what are the advantages of the different weapons??

The Kotor games were based on D&D stat rolls, but Bioware didn't use that for Mass Effect.

If an enemy is tanking that much, you must have the difficulty turned up. You have to use abilities that deal extra damage to shields in that case. If you don't have any, use one of your squad mates

Smg is better against shields than anything else by far. Not counting tech skills of course.

Sniper is obvious.

Assault rifle or pistol are kinda the go to weapons and shotgun is for up close (obviously).

in ME1 you're a tank. soak up the damage and use weapon mods to add ammo effects to your kit. in ME2 and 3 you're less of a tank but you get powers that let you handle shields and armor a bit easier.

If you're going to be a soldier then different ammo types are going to be your jam. You should be switching that shit every new area, each different type is better against different enemies (and yes there's one for shielded foes). It's all in the item descriptions. ME1 had a SHIT TON of inventory management.
