Theres only one spot in my entire house I can plug my router into and its on the opposite side of the house from all the devices that use WiFi. I just set up a new game room/office in the basement and its about as far away from the router as can be, and the connection speed isnt the greatest (paying for up to 500Mbps, getting less than 50 down here. Had it upstairs before and would get at least 150).

I can pay Cox like $100 to install a new outlet in a more centralized location or I can buy an extender and plug it in around where Id have them put it, but how well do they work?

In my experience they are shit for gaming online. Made it unplayable for me, like lag every 3 seconds and low framerate and got kicked off of every game.

not well. any wifi to wifi extenders, even ones in regular routers, will slow down things because half the data its sending is being used up by maintaining the connection.

paying for 2 modems isn't very costly, but if you're rich i guess yeah go for it.

unless you're willing to run ethernet through your walls (i have mine routed along the basepanels on my floor) into another router running in AP mode, you could try these powerline adapters

https://www.amazon.com/TP-Link-AV600-Powerline-Ethernet-Adapter/dp/B00AWRUICG

you plug them into the walls, one into the router and the other into the whatever you need. they channel the connection through your power lines in your walls. in your case, i would plug one end into your router, and then buy another router and plug it in on the other side, and run the second one in Access Point mode or whatever its called on that model (DHCP turned off, look for that). then you could have another wifi network just for that area

but it might be bad if your power lines are old and worn, or if your circuitry is weird. but they're cheap enough to say hey give it a try and do some testing.

Depends on your house layout I guess. My router is downstairs in my living room behind my TV, and I'm currently on my computer upstairs in my office which I also use for gaming. In my office I have a wifi extender plugged into a socket, an ethernet cable running from it to a network switch, and another ethernet cable from that to my computer. My home is about ~1500 sq ft

I've done a ton of speed tests using multiple sites because I spent a good bit of money on the equipment and wanted to justify the purchases, and it's pretty much the same speed it is when I had my laptop directly connected to my router by ethernet cable (300/~300). But I'm also using a wifi6 router and wifi6 extender which may make a difference

Router: https://www.amazon.com/ASUS-RT-AX3000-802-11ax-Lifetime-Whole-Home/dp/B084BNH26P
Wifi extender: https://www.amazon.com/WiFi-6-Range-Extender-Booster/dp/B088H2FCHL

The part about the range on the ASUS router is kinda bs because without the extender the signal was weak and my gaming PC connection was laggy at times. The extender completely eliminated that problem while being in the same spot.

Unfortunately, due to the constraints of Wi-Fi signal, your best option is to have an additional coax/fiber outlet installed. Alternatively, if managing one cable via channels along your floor or however you want to do it doesn't bother you, you can run cable from your router to a switch about halfway to your basement, then run that cable down to your basement to your device or another switch and plug up your stuff into that switch. By switch, I don't mean nintendo switch. An unmanaged switch or two would be ok for this setup, but you'd have to decide if having those cables around bothers you or not.

Speed is fine, but it will be significantly laggy

Yeah I contacted Cox and its only $60 to relocate the router so Im just gonna do that. Theres an outlet in my living room thats right above the new game room so Ill be like 10 feet away from it, separated by the floor. Way closer than I was when I was on the upper floor so hopefully Ill actually get closer to those 500 speeds Im paying for.

and if not I can probably drill a hole in the floor and run an Ethernet cable down there where it wont stick out like a sore thumb.
