This is very bad because when the coil is frozen the AC starts putting out heat (ironically), which in turn makes it run harder which obviously doesn't work...

I cleaned it out, emptied the reservoirs, adjusted the filters and tried again and it worked great for one day... then it froze again.

ugh.

I really don't want to have to buy a new AC unit

That happens to some of the refrigeration units at the grocery store sometimes. They gotta pull everything out and spray it with hot water or some shit

does that work?

'cuz it's possible my unit still had some trace moisture to set up a freezing chain reaction and I just needed to dry it longer

I dunno about "works". It happens every so often and I'm not sure if it's the best approach TBH.

They have maintenance guys coming in all the time. Every time a unit goes down, stock needs to be pulled off the shelf and put in the walk-in cooler or freezer so it doesn't melt or go bad. But it seems like they're really hesitant to do anything more than 'bandaid' fixes

Do you have a normal fan you could put behind it? It might solve your problem (Believe condensation builds up on the coils, which freezes over time, but a fan will blow it off before it freezes so it shouldn't build up).

It's worth trying at least.

Usually caused by a couple of things:

  1. Clogged filter (sounds like you already checked this)
  2. Fan is broken / not working (there is a fan that blows across the coils. Without this airflow, the coils will start to frost/freeze up)
  3. You have a refrigerant leak. This will usually result in one part of the coils being frozen while the other size of the coils are clear.
  4. The thermostat on your coils that tells the compressor to turn off is shorted which will cause the compressor to continuously run and result in frozen coils.

Ok, I looked inside with a flashlight this time... one side looks a little old, a little rust; but the other side looks crazy rusted

...

I think it might just be time to get a new one :v

Hmm, sounds like it could be a lack of airflow across the coils, or your coils could freeze if there's a problem with the refrigeration system itself or it could be low on refrigerant.
