Plenty of states don't do them, without hearing tales of flying deathtraps killing everyone.

I respect the idea and am glad they find the problems, but I shouldn't need to pay a mechanic $700-900 in consecutive years to pass a $20 inspection just so the police don't pull me over. My car wasn't going to fail tomorrow.

I wonder if there are any CEman who work in auto insurance risk who could tell us if it makes a difference.

Yeah no I actually hear quite a few of those stories from states that don't require a regular state inspection.

It's usually more mundane stuff like crashes killing the drivers/passengers.

Or driving down any given highway in Ohio and seeing no fewer than four abandoned wrecks just on the side of the road.

I think it's just a revenue generating scheme. When I went to New England from CA, they wanted to charge me to check the lights, wipers and a few other things to get a new plate.

I said "eff this". Kept my CA plates the whole time I was there

In my experience it's a Northeast thing. Vehicle inspections yet the most beat up cars I have ever seen are in the Northeast.

Concept is fine, but I think the standards are pointlessly high for the purpose of generating revenue. It should simply be a standard of "is this car an active danger to the driver and those around them?"

As someone who works in the automotive field in Pennsylvania, I can tell you that state inspections save lives.

There are often times that drivers have serious problems with their vehicles that they don't know about, or are ignorant to.

Just one example are holes in the floor or undercarriage body like rocker panels inner rockers allowing exhaust fumes to get into the cabin of the vehicle. We're patching these types of things all of the time for customers who if not for inspection, would never realize they have this problem until it is too late.

Like someone mentioned above, this really is a northeastern/northern thing where we have to deal with the winter weather and the products used(like salt) to treat the roads that destroy the metal of our cars and trucks.

I grew up in a state without safety checks and there was never an issue. When I lived there a state with safety checks it was abundantly clear it was just a revenue thing lol. They don't actually check anything integral to the vehicles safety.

nah tc its for your safety and everyone elses safety

they should actually enforce yearly repairs or bans on driving for every car that fails to go through mandatory yearly maintenance. Otherwise ceased by state to protect other drivers.

idk thats the type of stuff you like right?

I've narrowly avoided crashing into a rear axle that literally fell off the rustbucket car in front of me. I think inspections would find this sort of thing

I just don't think I should be forced to fix it right now when it's not an immediate danger to me or anyone on the road.

Like I said, nothing wrong with the concept and I'm fine with certain safety issues having to be fixed right then and there to pass.

I'm sorry you're so upset with my opinions on public health crises that you tried to make a bad comparison.
