A Gallup poll released Wednesday found that adults from Generation Z are far likelier to identify as lesbian, gay, bisexual or trans (LGBT) than older Americans are.

An estimated 5.6 percent of U.S. adults identify as LGBT, according to the poll, a 4.5 percent increase from Gallups last update, based off data from 2017.

The results are compiled from more than 15,000 interviews conducted throughout 2020 with Americans aged 18 and up.

As for Gen Zers (those born between 1997 and 2002) 1 in 6, or roughly 16 percent of respondents identified as as LGBT.

Comparatively, 9 percent of Millennials and 3.8 percent of Gen Xers identify as LGBT. Just 1.3 percent of those born before 1946 and 2 percent of baby boomers identified similarly.

According to Gallup, the poll results stem from a time when Americans are increasingly supportive of equal rights for LGBT people, and with younger generations far more likely than older generations to consider themselves LGBT, the identification is predicted to rise steadily.

Does CE believe its a trend? Or does CE believe this is the result of people being more comfortable with themselves these days?

I think its definitely kids being more comfortable with it. Like, Im a teacher and we now teach (a little bit of) LGBTQ history/topics. I never had that as a kid. Never. Its so amazing to see the progress we have made.

I do think that there may always be people who want to identify as LGBTQ in some way, but I think thats more a response to the stringent boundaries/expectations set up for cis+heterosexual people, rather than someone merely, and perhaps superficially, following a trend. Hope this makes sense

Probably a combination of people being more comfortable coming out and bicurious kids wanting to wear the LGBT label.

Probably a combination of not only people being more accepting but the fact that being gay or bi comes with a social prestige in some circles.

More LGBT people can come out now which is incredible, but I do wonder the authenticity of "more gays" in Gen Z. As someone in that age group, there's a ton of people (mostly white women) who say they're bi all of the time even though they've never been with another woman.

I think more men would admit to being bisexual if it weren't stigmatized so much. Women can be open about it and they don't get as much homophobia for it.

Anyway, it kind of makes sense that a bisexual person would date more heterosexual partners than gay ones just by virtue of how many more straight options there are than gay ones
