I kinda wish late night talk shows had people on who actually wanted to talk about shit. Literally all talk shows are for is advertising movies and music, and the in-between jokes are weak and childish.

You have so many old actors and directors you could bring on to just shoot the shit, and it'd be great. Still advertise your guest's shit, but don't make that the core of the show.

Only late night talk show host I give a shit about nowadays is Conan O' Brian and he's leaving TBS for HBO max, which I'm not subscribed to.

Imagine watching Colbert... The guy literally can't function without thinking about a grown-ass man post-presidency.

I'm guessing talk shows have to rely on that marketing to make their money. Likewise a lot of guests probably wouldn't bother doing it on their own time. Especially the ones that attract viewers.

Honestly if you're into that sort of stuff I think podcasts are a much better medium. No talk show structure to worry about. No audience to entertain. Just people talking. Although even Conan's podcast these days primarily gets people on to promote things it still at least has most of it as just them talking. Doesn't feel like it's a bunch of producers steering a conversation in the right way.

There's also the actors roundtable on YouTube that has well regarding people just talking.

I think the biggest issue talk shows have is that the internet has made their product rather redundant. We have alternatives that don't rely on such commercialization. We just have to listen to people shill mattresses and ball trimmers for a few minutes.

That's why I loved Craig Ferguson's show so much. "Oh you're here for X, here - done, now how about that Y?"

I'm still sad I only ever found out about it in his last year.

It's for reasons like this that I loved Craig Ferguson, and have sorely missed him since he's been off the air. I think it was his Scotland trip that this really sunk in for me - him just having a good time and shooting the shit with Mila Kunis, Michael Clarke Duncan, Rashida Jones, and whoever else he took with him. I would pay good money to have those on DVD so I could play them to go to sleep by every night.

Colbert's late night show has always been pretty fucking bad. He's a terrible host. Wish he would have stuck with the Colbert Report.
