I have a very rough idea of what it is and how it works, and I'm progressing it slowly, but right now it's so abstract that I can't see what its function could actually be. maybe I'm not creative enough.

that's the thing, it's an abstract system that doesn't really have an application. right now it's just a model of how it works... and I barely have that figured out.

my question is just, if something has a use should it be obvious right away?

In math, plenty of things were invented as novel restrictions/extensions of existing systems before finding an application in other fields years later. A slight exaggeration, but a lot of number theory was just for funsies until the last 100 years when computers and cryptography became a thing.
