In fact I actually get (physically) upset if a movie doesn't have a training montage for a character and he's immediately good, I am visibly shaken if that ever happens.

It's one of those tropes that you love to see, and eternally thankful to Rocky for starting it.

I like the montage in Edge of Tomorrow where he keeps getting killed and eventually turns into a jaded badass.

The best one is from Rocky IV. Great music, and it shows how the 2 opponents are doing the same training but in different ways (one primitive, while the other using equipments supervised by specialists).

That movie is so surprisingly good and weirdly didn't get any traction or high gross.

Return to the 36th Chamber is basically a big training montage with a little bit of story on either end

it is iconic, however it always struck me as ironic that they showed Drago taking steroids and Rocky lifting rocks while Stallone was definitely on steroids.

I think the real irony is that the American is training in so called "primitive style" while the Russian is doing equipment with specialists

I like the one in the force awakens where Rey closes her eyes for a couple of seconds.

Family Guy had something like this, where Brian went through this big training montage with Stewie doing a bunch of physical exercises, only to find out that the exam in Brian's college class was coming up and he didn't study at all for it during the training montage. He ended up failing the class.

I can't remember what other show did an "overtrained" type of subversion similar to that

I'll be honest I actually didn't like that much, quite frankly I would have liked if there was a bit more of a training segment to feel earned if you know what I mean.

Weird, that montage is on TV as I typed this. I got FG playing in the background and that episode and exact scene just happened to be on lol.

Also, the training montage from the Star Wars RotJ episode where Chris/Luke trains with Yoda is mixed in with the actual montage from Rocky IV.
