Got my gf and I Note 20 Ultras, since Verizon is having a buy 1, get 1 free sale. Well, they're back ordered and won't be shipping our phones until the end of the month. I've never had this happen to me in the past 12 years of phone buying. Sure, maybe they're out of stock sometimes, but longest wait was like a week. Why are so many people trying to get high end phones right now?

I wonder if it might be related to chip shortages that are effecting game console production

Probably all the free stimulus money the government's given out. Instead of using it to pay down bills or save for when the gravy train runs out in case they don't have a good job by then, people would rather live in the moment and blow it on useless crap.

And no, a high end phone is indeed useless crap. A $100-$200 phone provides all the functions you need just fine. The high end ones are status symbols.

Not at all, my gf right now has a 150 dollar phone, and her picture quality is fucking horrible. She has to borrow my phone(Note 9) to take any decent pics. We got our phones around the same time, and hers lags like crazy sometimes, while mine works almost like brand new. There are so many things better with my phone vs. hers that it's not even comparable. You really don't know what you're talking about at all.

Unless you're a professional photographer nobody needs the absolute best camera phones. They're just nice to have.

I got a Moto E3 (I think that's what it is?) for $50 on sale a little over 2 years ago.
the camera is pretty damn good. I regularly use it to take pictures of labels for batteries and other components in equipment at work so I can either look it up later or send it to co-workers that need the info. The text is tiny but is crystal clear when the picture is zoomed in on.
I legit don't know WTF beyond that level of quality people expect out of their camera phones...

EDIT: Moto E4, w/ an 8 MP rear camera

I loved Motorola phones, but we both had Moto G4s, and a lot of those had a problems that it'd lose the ability to connect to cell signals. When that happened and a lot of people complained, Motorola's answer was "get another phone". Never will buy another Motorola phone.

It's nice to have a phone with good camera when you have a family, especially toddlers and babies. My gf's phone camera is about as good as yours, but when you need to take photos of moving kids, that shit is useless, which is why you need a good camera. Also, you're not used to having a decent phone, but get one, and you'll never want to go back to a shitty phone like yours again.

So, your sales pitch for an expensive phone is, "you'll develop a co-dependency for expensive phones and feel compelled to overpay for the rest of your life"?
:P

Weird flex, but ok.
I'll continue to not know what I'm missing and save money. If I ever need a super high quality camera, I'll just buy an actual camera and it'll be cheaper and last longer.

Well, don't go around spewing nonsense about how cheap phones are just as good as actually good phones when they clearly aren't. I've had cheap, midrange, and expensive phones, and they're all night and day.

A phone is good if it calls people. Texting is even better. Video capabilities if you live near stupid people. Thats all one needs on a phone. Phones are for basic communication.

This has been the case for the last decade so it's very late of you to realise. If anything the hype cycle over top end phones is coming to a close, because they're not the status symbol they once were.

so, you're bitching about people using the stimulus for it's intended purpose?

I used a $20 flip phone with a 1.6 MP camera for 8 years. I upgraded to a G7 One two years ago, which is a $900 (CDN) phone (which is paid for through the $40/mo basic plan I'd be paying for anyway; I did not choose to spend that much money on a phone). The camera's better, obviously, and it's handy to be able to access the Internet and whatnot, but if I had to pay the full price of the more expensive phone, I absolutely would have gone for something much cheaper. It's just not worth the difference.

It's probably more a supply issue than a demand one. Electronics manufacturing worldwide has been hurt by the chip shortage.

The chip shortage for all electronics is a factor as well.
