and sure there were some good things
but most of the shit just sucked a lot

The only thing I really liked about the 80s was the indy and black music scene up until the 1984. If I had to pick bands just in punk and New Wave:

B-52s (surf-punk era)
Psychedelic Furs
The Clash
Romeo Void
Killing Joke
Marshall Crenshaw (50s throwback rockabilly)
Human League
Falco (the German hits that didn't crossover)
The Cure
The Pretenders
Klaus Nomi

It was mainly the grundgy, dirty guitar sound a lot of these groups leaned on. If you want a couple examples of this guitar sound, then "Rock Lobster" by the B-52s and "Rock the Casbah" by The Clash.

First wave hip-hop was great. The second wave of ska was cool too. R&B was cranking out good stuff also.

But overall, a lot of turmoil. Cold War, president shot, bad economy. I guess every generation goes through that in a way, but 80-82 was rough.

Yes and no. It's more sophisticated now. People don't shout the "n-word" as you're walking down the streets as much as back then. But they'll use the legislature to suppress your vote.

Also cops would harass you for being black back then with random traffic stops and full vehicle searches - and there were sundown towns - but they didn't shoot like they do today. Police shootings have gotten much worse. Even during Jim Crow, it was the lynch mob not the cops that did the killing (confirmed with relatives who survived Jim Crow).

The police are much worse than in the 1980s.

There was no internet or social media. A lot of pop culture is internet or social media related now and cultural influences are more diffuse. In the 80's it was mainly movies or TV. Or the underground.

I remember MTV being a really big deal and ESPN too. It shaped the way people viewed things in a big way.

The cool thing I remember from the 80's is that there were actual underground movements. Punk, hip hop, mod/ska. Not really sure if anything like that is possible anymore.

I remember that shit! My small town cop chief used the term "pot." Fucking boomer-ass boomer.

On a tragic note, he got in serious trouble when the town had a gun show and a 6 y/o kid accidentally killed himself with an uzi while trying it out. RIP. Police chief had been supervising the event but the father let the kid handle a weapon he was not ready for :(
