I watched that sketch to see if it was as bad as I thought it would be. It's awful, but like it's not just awful because of Elon. The entire thing is so bad. YouTube channels make better game sketches than that with a fraction of the budget. Put SNL out of its misery.

SNL is a far cry from what it used to be. The funniest skit I remember watching was Debbie Downer with Lindsay Lohan. I just checked and this was in 2004 damn. Kristen Wiig also had some funny skits.

That's true. I remember older people complaining about it then and wondered what they were on about because it was funny to me in the mid 2000s.

I enjoy some sketches, but not all. I assume they make sketches to appeal to many demographics so that lots of people may watch. Since many people just end up looking up certain sketches on youtube, I guess it works... But Idk... While I don't watch many of their sketches, I have found a couple to be funny...

who is the audience for this

The audience for SNL is the same audience for late-night talk shows. Namely, "Middle America". The "Fly-Over States". The same people who still watch "The Simpsons" 20+ years after it should have been cancelled.

At a certain point, people stop watching shows because they're good, and just keep watching them out of a sort of social inertia. "This is what I've always watched, so I will continue to watch" is a comfortable, stabilizing feeling for people in a world that can seem incredibly chaotic at times.

Also stoners. Stoners will watch pretty much anything late at night (Adult Swim has repeatedly proven this for years).

Zangulus posted...
People don't seem to realize SNL has ALWAYS been hit or miss.

Yeah, but the trick is, SNL tends to cycle between periods where it's mostly hit/occasionally miss, where it's mostly miss/occasionally hit, and when it's a LOT of hits/very few misses. Or times like now, when it's almost entirely miss and where the hell are the hits?

There's a reason why people praise certain seasons (and casts) more than others, and why the show was almost cancelled in 1980. There's also a reason why so many movies have been spun off SNL in the past, but it's hard to imagine anyone making a movie about any of the current cast or their characters.

We're not talking about a show that has always churned out a lot of shit and a few memorable skits that sort of justify the rest. There were times when nearly every sketch was at least good (if not great), and there have been multiple times when people start asking "Why is this still on the air?" Usually, the success rate of the show shifts over the years as they change cast (with new, unexpected breakout cast members) and get new writers in, but SNL has sort of been in a slump for a long time now, and it seems less and less likely every year that we're ever going to get a new resurgent year where it's suddenly much better again.

I got news for everybody. SNL has always been like this. The vast majority is half-assed at best, boring attempts at quickly assembling something that was never going to be funny. All those great skits you've seen? They're the gems, the rare successes that you get when people with actual talent and skilled, but tight deadlines write lines for actors who have days to practice if lucky, often only hours. A bunch of miserably failed and easily forgotten skits, a good handful of memorable chuckles, and the occasional classic. If you don't believe me, seriously try checking out a full season of the first year.

People probably watched a lot of hour-long reruns back in the day so they caught a lot of it with the worst half hour cut out. Now people probably just watch older clips on youtube so it's even less clear what a full older episode looked like. I'd still say it's particularly bad now based on what I've seen, but I've like never in my life had the desire to sit through a full 90 minute SNL

In the old days of the mid-1970s when SNL debuted, their core audience were people who didn't go out on Saturday night thus that was their demographic and that's when SNL was really good with a cast that included Bill Murray, Dan Aykroyd, Chevy Chase, John Belushi, Garret Morris, Laraine Newman, and the late Gilda Radner.

The original cast is considered to be the best cast of all time for SNL and one can't argue with that. Eddie Murphy came along in the early 1980s and literally saved SNL and we all know what happened for Murphy after that.

SNL players are also sketch writers. A lot of people seemed upset at the idea of working with Elon Musk. Instead of making a spectacle by stepping aside/refusing to perform, I think the writers decided to sabotage this episode.
