I don't plan on circumcising if I have a son. I've been with multiple uncut guys before. It's not a big deal. The surgery is unnecessary (though there are some exceptions for medical reasons to circumcise) and can be botched. I'm not religious. Rest of the world does fine without. Nah thanks.

it seems like the popular belief is "my dick is cut so i'll get my son's cut too". which makes sense to some degree because that's what you're used to. but it'd be weird if a female was pushing for circumcision...like what would that purpose be other than for purely cosmetic reasons? seems kind of weird caring about how you want your child's genitals to look, or that you think other people will find his genitals "gross".

I can understand how it became a tradition for ancient Jews, since living in a desert region with limited access to soap and water means there are clear health benefits to not having to worry about penile hygiene (and, in a pre-germ theory society, "health benefits" and "God doesn't hate you" are pretty much interchangeable). Continuing it today is very much a matter of tradition for tradition's sake, but I can at least understand where it came from.

For Gentile Americans, the tradition was started by Dr. Kellogg, who was a puritan that proposed it as a way of making sex/masturbation less pleasurable to discourage people from doing it (for women, he proposed burning the clitoris with a bit of oxalic acid, but that never caught on), since sex was such an immoral thing. It caught on, since there were enough puritan influences floating around back then for society to like the idea of cutting down on all that sinful sex-having, and has since become a tradition as fathers pretty much just say "might as well make his look like mine" and don't question how utterly pointless it is.

Aesthetic preferences like that are very much a matter of social expectations. Being circumcised is the norm, so anything that deviates from that is weird (especially where the stigma around foreskins usually comes with the assumption that those that have them don't understand how to clean them, which is largely baseless). It's nothing really inherent in it so much as it is what you've been raised to expect.

That said, justifying surgery like that with aesthetic preferences really isn't okay, even if we ignore the fact that said cosmetic surgery is being performed on non-consenting infants. Try reversing the sex: imagine if you felt that vulvas looked better without the clitoris, and stated that in an effort to pressure women into getting a clitorectomy (or to justify having such a procedure performed on an infant daughter). You'd see a pretty massive backlash, and quite justifiably so. So why is it okay to say something equivalent about men?

It's more extreme (circumcision makes sex less pleasurable, a clitorectomy makes orgasm all but impossible), but the logic is the same: Chop off part of your bits so you don't like sex so much, then pass it off in the modern world as just being a cosmetic thing because that's easier than trying to come to terms with the reason the tradition was started. Had Kellogg's idea of burning the clitoris caught on, clitoral scarring would be considered as aesthetically normal now as circumcision is, with all the same people jumping to defend it for exactly the same reasons despite how obviously harmful it is.

Really, scale aside, the only difference is that you wouldn't have the cosmetic industry promoting it, since clitoral scarring doesn't produce products they can sell the way that circumcision does. And if you want something more comparable in scale, there are several other parts of the vulva that could be cut off to effect a similar goal, which the cosmetic industry could also turn into a cheap source of human collagen.

It's mainly Muslim/Jewish countries like Iran, Indonesia, Israel etc but not that prevalent in Europe or Aus/NZ at all. Or the Caribbean here. Or Africa minus the Muslim parts. Though the latter is an odd case where it became much more common in the last 10+ years because of health reasons. The US is the really odd case where its extremely common despite those religions not being the dominant one. I guess the puritan thing is to blame.

Yep, when I talk about it being the norm, I'm specifically referring to the US. Globally, it's mostly limited to being a religion thing.

If I end up having a boy at some point, I don't plan on doing circumcision even though I'm cut. The only thing I'd even be slightly concerned about is that being uncut is somewhat socially stigmatized. It's becoming increasingly common though and I think 20 to 30 years from now, circumcision may be seen as weird
