Feel like making this topic whenever a deal hits for it just in case.

These are very good games that any genre fan should check out. You do not have to have played the original quadrilogy.

I've never played a .hack game, how does it compare to a typical rpg like final fantasy

To clarify, this is actually 3 full games in one, since it a remastered collection.

It's set in an MMO in game, which is the staple of the franchise. It's action based, but...it's tough to really nail down what to compare it too? It's not like Tales, for example, It's kind of its own thing unless someone else can think of a game in missing. It has a lot of fun with incorporating MMO like mechanics without actually being one.

Definitely one of the best "pretends to be an MMO" games out there. Cool visual aesthetic, gameplay isn't terrible, wide cast of characters, and fun worldbuilding.

I was looking through this sale now and saw Odin Sphere is available for $18. Is that any good? I was interested it in when it first came out on the PS2 but never played it

Odin Sphere is a very cool game with a great aesthetic....I personally do not think it is necessarily a great game. A lot of people disagree with me, I'm sure, but it does not hold up well. For Vanillaware, 13 Sentinels is by a LARGE margin their best game, and even for their action games I think Muramasa holds up a lot better than Odin Sphere. The visuals, music, and story for Odisphere are still great, though.

I'm tempted, but I feel like this will just be one of those games I never actually get around to playing, but it is only $7.49...

I played the first two volumes of the original .hack back in the day, and bought the third but my PS2 wouldn't read the disc.

These are very different mechanically and presentation wise from those games. I honestly do not think those are very good, especially in retrospect, and ESPECIALLY compared to G.U.

Original series games were a lot jankier, yeah. I thought they were mostly enjoyable but i didn't finish them either because I could never find a reasonably priced copy of the 4th game lol.

the .hack parts 1 through 4 games on the PS2 are some of the most repetitive games I've ever played. I liked the concept, but man was it not worth it. I hear GU is better, but they continue to sit on my shelves.

The sale though was solid, got a bunch of trails in the sky and Ys

GU remaster actually includes a cheat mode that gives you maxed everything if you really can't stand the gameplay and just want to see the story, and it doesn't even lock you out of anything (except apparently one achievement for hitting a specific level).

GU combat isn't perfect but it is much more arcadey compared to the first games. Lots of weapon switching, combos, guard breaking, etc going on.

I played ep 1, and found it enjoyable for a few hours until it got very same-y and grindy. I know literally nothing about G.U.

G.U. is still repetitive, but the storytelling and characters are WAY more fleshed out. It also adds stuff to at least break the dungeon crawl fest a fair bit. For $7.50, it is an EASY buy. It was one of my favorite PS2 games, and I am glad they brought it back to PS4.

It's great. The new version fixes a lot of the problems the original had and is a much better game.
