I know its supposed to be eight hours sleep, eight hours work, eight hours of your own time which would be great in theory, but that doesnt take into account getting ready time and commuting time and end of day time. Or unpaid lunch breaks.

I feel like when all is said and done, I get four to maybe four and a half hours of true time for myself a day (except on my one day off obviously and my Sunday half-days). Thats just not enough. It would be one thing if I was done working completely in like five years, but Im in my mid-30s with only an associates degree and my only work experience is working at a grocery store. Im going to be working for a very. long. time.

And yes, I know that there are some people who have to work even longer than eight hours a day, and thats not right either (unless they genuinely love what they do) but that shouldnt be a thing at all.

I'm blessed now I work at a staples warehouse we've been slow and I'm salary so on mon-thurs I worked like 28 hours then my Sunday shift which is always 4 hours. So I'm salary and with 32 hours I'm making like $46 an hour lol I'm blessed no college either.

I work 10 hour shifts which is rough at times, BUT it means I get a full work week in four days and get a three day weekend.

But I also have another part time job so free time is still very limited.

I wish I had a Time-Turner from Harry Potter... but NOT so that I can do crazy time travel shenanigans or try to steal things or profit. I just want to be able to work AND sleep AND still have time to enjoy all my various multimedia

I'd be okay with a 10 hour day working 4 days per week. That cuts commuting and getting ready time dramatically.

But what we really need is to have the work week cut to 30 hours. With the unemployment that we have and with how much productivity we squeeze from workers, we can afford to pay more per hour and cut hours to improve the quality of life. It's just not profitable to do that, so we don't do it.

If you dont like the length of your day work part time.

you will take a pay cut. But thats how it goes.

in an era where people can be more easily replaced by robots and technology workers need to expand their skills and increase their value if they want to carry more value in their salary.

most industries arent there yet but the less value per dollar of salary workers bring to their employers the more attractive replacing people with machines and tech becomes.

I do something like this. I work for a school district so I have lots of time off. But when I do work a normal week without a holiday/break, I work 40 hours 5 days per week.

Eight hours of sleep is a ridiculously large amount of sleep. And it's not supposed to be "eight hours of your own time." There's no proscribed amount of own time, it's just whatever is left when you're done doing other stuff.

Have you ever stopped to think *you're* the one who's out of touch? You're complaining about having to a bare minimum. I could understand high schoolers bitching about working because they're immature (but they're also juggling work plus school, even if they're not doing a lot of work), but you're an adult.

Yeah, which is also an option. If a person downscales their life, they can have tremendous amounts of free time. That's one appeal behind the tiny homes movement. That would drive me crazy, though.

My normal work schedule kinda stinks too.

I wake up at 530 get ready for work and I have a long commute. So I get into work at 730 and get home at about 5 (before pandemic it was 530). So I try to sleep before 11. After cooking and eating dinner that's about 3 hours to myself. Sometimes I go to the gym so it becomes 2 hours or less to myself.

I would personally be much happier with a 32 hour work week. I have many side projects I'd like to work on and one extra day off is really good for the mental health. Other countries do it because those countries are much less serious about maximizing profits. I will probably move to one of those countries, where, tragically, rich people are taxed most of their money, so they tragically have less political influence.

Obviously you can't just sit on welfare all day because you're lazy, I don't support that.

But yeah you are all fucked in eight different ways.

And I think my AMP was its highest around Jan 2020 when I was the busiest I'd been in a few years because in addition to working a normal 40+ hours at one job, a friend talked me into working sales on weekends, and that was on top of some freelance stuff I had going on.

I'd really like your basis for believing in one of the many 8-myths. 8 hours of sleep. 8 glasses of 8-ounces of water. It's magic numbers and pseudo-scientific nonsense.

As science and history has shown, the 8-hour sleep cycle is unnatural which is why many people struggle to stay asleep that long:
https://www.bbc.com/news/magazine-16964783

The actual amount of sleep doctors recommend is 6-8 hours, but even 6 is a lot once you get used to sleeping less.
