Just put in zip code 41144 and look at the wages. Costco and Walmart pay $12.50 to start. No factory around here competes with that. The call centers for Amazon and AT&T pay $12.50 an hour.

The factories don't even try to compete. They know that people with little education and little social skills will take the jobs No matter what, so they pay minimum wage, or as close as they can get.

Factories in your area may be great, around here they are not. They are old, outdated, dangerous, and underpaid.
I live in the area
There are definitely factories that pay well, there's just a lot of competition to get in. That's kind of how it should work though. If you can get a job at Lincoln Electric or ArcelorMittal you can live like a king here.

Its not just entry level shortage though. They don't have enough skilled labor either. Not enough mechanics, or electricians, or welders, or wood workers, not enough CAD people.

People just aren't doing those things these days, not like they used to. The pay is decent for an electrician, but who's doing it? People aren't using the pandemic time to learn to weld, or learn to fix CNC machines. They are learning to code, they are learning IT stuff. They are learning advertising and business.

We've told at least two generations "gotta get a degree" and stigmatized the hell out of vocational training in the meantime.

That's pretty accurate, although there has been a push for some of this stuff in hs career centers over the past decade. It's not getting the kind of enrollment as nursing and cosmetology though.

And for reasons I don't understand at all the entire area is brimming with die cutters/machinists which I guess would be mid level.

All things equal, pay, benefits, and hours, would you rather weld, or come up with ad campaigns?

Jobs like welding are not things most people would choose in that scenario. Some would, but not enough. I wouldn't.

Really think about the people you know that are trade workers like plumbers. I've known a few plumbers, it used to be a popular job around here. None of them were that well off. Not as well off as the office workers, and they were all worked to death. Exhausted after work, just spending time recovering from that days labor. While the office worker was just starting to live his life after work.

It just wasn't an appealing lifestyle, and I really haven't seen that it's changed much. Which is why not many people are doing it.

If absolutely no one will do a job, there is something wrong with the job. To suggest otherwise would be crazy. A relative of mine is always saying that people don't know how to work these days. It's one thing if a job has a lot of turnover every few months---that would mean that the work and pay were OK but that employees are on the lookout for something better. But when people flat out won't apply for a position, or apply but only stay for a couple of shifts, something must be wrong with the job.

If there is a $1 trillion factory job problem, then there is something wrong with an awful lot of factory jobs out there.

I mean....that would be the reason why.
Yep.
They need to raise minimum wage to actually livable standards but that would raise salaries across the board.
They want to keep the industrial class in check with low wages.
It will never happen.

I worked 12 hour shift work in my late 20s for a short time and the pay was not bad. Most younger folks don't wanna put in the work it seems these days.

Another thing Pound Garden and Trent won't tell you about these factory companies, if you injure your back from repetitive work the company will deny you L&I because "there is no proof the injury occured on premise"

Funny how they hate the idea Target pays a decent wage but fight tooth and nail about all the problems present at factories and plants. No one wants tire out their young bodies at a factory or warehouse and have busted knees before they have kids. The thing about Trent and Pound Garden is they love the concept of a corporation designed like Foxx Conn where the workers pretty much live in the building and only get enough food and shelter. I'll take it a step further. I suspect the fact that the premise of minority and black people get a decent wage starting really really bothers those two guys

https://www.huffpost.com/entry/worker-shortage-unemployment-benefits_n_609056c3e4b09cce6c21a850

it's almost like they posted this in response to this topic

At the time, millions of workers were losing their jobs every week, and nobody knew how bad things would get. But a few weeks after the initial lockdowns, businesses started recalling workers, millions returned to their jobs despite the extra benefits, and the jobless rate plunged. A spate of academic studies found the extra benefits werent stopping people from going back to work after all.

At $300 per week, the federal supplement is half what it was last year, but the criticism is twice as intense even though the previous doomsaying didnt pan out.

GOP be like "people make more money on Unemployment than working! Therefore we should end Unemployment!!!"
or you know, increase wages?

What do we have to do to get it through these clowns heads? If you want people to work for you, you have to give them some real incentive to work there. Its literally that simple.
