If anything, that guy should have invested in automation - then he'd have two Countaches.

Lol, he's simultaneously the opposite and personification of a wealthy businessman. Dude immigrated here from Pakistan and made his fortune designing and patenting his process. He LOVES being on site and will gladly take off his Armani jacket and work a spin closer lol. He honesty likes giving people jobs and opportunity and helping support the community. He did run the numbers on automation and rhe marginal increase in profits wasnt worth killing off 30% of the workforce.

They're not all evil

If they cant find skilled workers why dont they train new people that want to work but dont have the skills?

Sad thing about that is, at least here, roughly every week we get a group of new hires. Ranging from 20-40. Any that are selected for areas I supervise I train. Most don't come back the next day, some don't even stay the first day.

Because that costs money and time. They would rather a position go unfilled before they give on site training.

Unless it's some super complex job that's going to be largely impossible.

Robots don't need PTO. They don't need to take leave. They don't run up your medical insurance costs. They don't complain about sexual harassment and sue the company. They don't click on phishing emails and cryptolock your entire network. They don't make racist posts on twitter. They don't stage an insurrection at the capitol while wearing your company's badge. They don't need to be trained or given an office. Etc.

The accidents and the insurance cost would more than make robots worth the money. Factories around here a very slow to update though. They are basically the same as they were when they were built in the 1950s.

Would you risk your life in a coke plant to make $9 An hour?

Or inhale dust for 10 hours a day and get lung disease at 45 for $9 an hour?

It's really kind of ridiculous that they complain about not finding workers. They blame the workers for wanting better pay and conditions.

Why shouldn't he have nice things? He helps those he can in the community by providing them with a fair wage and a job for life as long as they show up and do their job. He also gives everyone $100 gift cards to Cub Foods at Thanksgiving so that way he knows all his employees can have a nice holiday meal for their families.

Have you seen the price of industrial robots?
Everything that is cost-effective to automate, already has been.

Well I just took around a look for the machines used to assemble cars. There's a lot of different ones that have different prices and all of them are necessary and prices seem to go from a few thousand to 50k per machine although the industry probably gets them wholesale so the real price is unknown but let's shoot for the moon here and say it takes $150k just to buy one of everything.

My job pays nearly $2 million a year in medical insurance. If $150k machines saves me $200k in insurance for employees I don't have to hire then it's already paid itself off in 1 year.

A $500000 countach would be $5000 per employee. That's not chump change, but it's only once, and likely to have been spread out as about forty cents an hour over five years.

Well, unless I'm misreading, you're proposing that instead of buying the Countach (which is not a $500k car btw) he should give everyone $5k...just because? All due respect, if you understood business, you'd know that random gifts/money for absolutely no reason actually decreases productivity by setting an expectation. Give them $5k for no reason, and 2 months from now, they'll be asking when you're going to randomly give them money for absolutely no reason again. Much like children, workers thrive on consistency

It's really sad (yet probably accurate) you think people aren't smart enough to know:

1) location (Kentucky, there ya go) and cost of living matter

2) you clearly cherry picked the lower wage listings. How many $15-$20/hr jobs did you ignore to compile your bucket of picturesque cherries?

That means absolutely jack fucking shit. How nice your car is is a useless metric for how well you're doing financially considering they're almost always financed

I've worked in and out of factories and retail in my early 20s and the fact is that the hours fucking suck, it's usually hot as shit during the summer, and while retail jobs aren't easy, now that they pay as much as most factories I'd never go back to working in one.

Manufacturing jobs not having enough staffing speaks for itself, and it ain't the workers fault.
