Holo had been courting the EN crowd for a long time before EN debuted, Niji just kinda ignored the west completely until now, it just seems they're kinda brazening their way in, way too late. They have an uphill battle ahead of them to pull viewers away from vtubers they're already invested in, and there's only so many hours in the day for them to compete over.

From what I gather, they just got complacent and lazy with their success in Japan, but now that they're expanding more globally, the're behind the curve and now the small fish in a large pond vs how it was the other way around when they were only paying attention to the JP market.

They gotta get to that point though--for the 3D, right now their EN Vtubers are barely pulling indie numbers which is really unfortunate. Hopefully they get the ball rolling somehow.

eh, I doubt it, vtubers are generally about the personality and who they are associated with. holo has a whole "walled garden" community/family that's already ingratiated themselves with the west and that's a big draw. It'd be hard to pull viewers away from that and into a brand new one that hasn't treated them as a viewer seriously yet.

Random thought. One great thing about vtubers is it is making youtube live more popular. Im not sure, but I have never really liked twitch. I stream on youtube, so its good for me.

well, ok, maybe not literally their very first thing as a way in. but I'm just kinda trying to think of things that niji "objectively" has over hololive and that's the big one that comes to mind. another is game permissions but hololive's getting better at those recently

holoEN did way better than I ever would have expected so I don't really want to write nijiEN off too quickly. that said, hololive did have a sizeable eng fanbase (mostly through fansubbers but hologra did have official english subs iirc) for a while before they made holoEN, and niji doesn't really seem to have the same thing despite them having an official english subbed clip channel

In terms of Twitch v Youtube, it's entirely up to preference I think. Both have major advantages and disadvantages, though that should be obvious. Youtube was perfect for Vtubers because most of them are in Japan, and overseas support largely came from clippers and VODs, which Twitch is frankly nearly unusable for. Twitch is mostly for live shows, and even Twitch streamers still use youtube for VODs and clips. It's annoying to have to switch back and forth so you lose things like quality chat (arguably, since Twitch chat is also cancer lol, but Asian chat in general is polite enough for Youtube chat to work out) and streamers easily supporting others without active planning in favor of reaching a bigger audience.

For Niji, they did try to get western support, and yeah their official Eng channel as far as I can tell has much more of an attempt than Holo's channel, for which they don't even have a specific channel for EN yet I think? The only ones that ever had a grab for me are girls like Tsukino Mito who had the pretty good Tsukino Mito in 10 min series that had english subtitles. But I rarely hear people refer to that as a gateway to vtubedom amongst the western audience.

I guess also for some reason, Holo JP is able to create more Western friendly memes? Like it was a brief moment but if you think about whether or not Niji has ever achieved the same level of meme as the Hi Honey fiasco for example, then the answer is probably no. Niji has some pretty funny moments, but the ones I can remember are from Niji's 3D streams like when Ange had a comically tall pair of boobs or in their Apex streams where Kuzuha fell off the map while getting off the vehicle and was hysterically screaming while Alelu (non Niji and former Apex pro) nearly cried laughing while spectating. But those are just funny moments. I think something like a meme really sticks in your head and is applicable to a lot of situations and other streamers.

I dunno, I keep thinking and I think the only way NijiEN succeeds is if like everybody they brought in are famous people. I also don't think they should only stick to girls, but something tells me their first gen is gonna be like 5 girls

If Niji en starts collabing with big normie western streamers/youtubers they'll get traction since holoen seems to be allergic to collabing with...well anyone. I mean, we all thought a calli/cr1tikal was gonna be a sure thing, but that still hasn't happened even though both calli and charlie said they wanted to do the collab.

But Critikal rarely ever collabs with people unless it's one of those things the OfflineTV and friends circle set up or if it's with a Twitch streamer, and Calli lives in Japan, which makes scheduling probably pretty difficult

Also Calli did come on Gigguk's podcast, so it's not like she's being restricted.

I'm reminded of when subaru said she was one of the lowest in hololive for overseas viewer %, someone clipped her talkingabout that, and now she's pretty high up there and has a massive eng speaking fanbase. Or how aki's chat is like 50% english after that extremely extremely popular eng clip that basically saved her existence at hololive overall

one thing that youtube does really well for streaming imo is the whole scheduling streams in advance with a fixed url for that stream that is simultaneously the prestream waiting room, the stream itself, and the vod archive. Just keeps everything so much cleaner and makes it a lot easier to follow a specific person's streams imo

edit: and the extension of my first paragraph is that for whatever reason there were very few clips of nijisanji back then and there still aren't a ton now, and I think basically the best subbers quality-wise are/were mostly hololive subbers

Clippers have a huge amount of power still by breaking down multi hour streams and putting them into easily digestible, "poppable" 1-3min clips that can more easily go viral due to low time investment required on the viewer, so they act as billboards/previews of what someone can expect to get if they "attend" a full stream.

EDIT: And I do agree that youtube streaming has a great amount of features that twitch lacks. I just wish their chat functionality was more like Twitch's, I really dislike the youtube chat and mostly don't participate because of that. I will say, youtube seems to be a lot more consistent about their DMCA enforcement and TOS than twitch, which works out well for when the girls go a bit bonkers. Although miko's movie streams seems to be working out well for her on Twitch since she's doing them more consistently nowadays.

Also yeah I think Holo subbers were far more prominent, but I don't think it's out of dumb luck. There's just something about Holo JP girls then that just had massive meme potential. Like Pekora's laugh, Matsuri's bandages etc. I guess it's the infamous moe gap that's more in play than people realize. They're supposed to be idols, but they're saying crazy shit all the time that warrants subs.

But with Niji, most of them feel like regular Japanese people in their 20's just goofing off. There's no real break in expectation or Western audience relatability.

I know Niji also does like idol-y stuff depending on the streamer, but even then I feel like if Niji does Idol theme, the girls stay relatively seiso or purely focused on singing, whereas Holo's singing reps tend to also do crazy stuff all the time because singing is less of a niche there

CR (Crazy Raccoon, some sort of an FPS/TPS group of streamers I think?) Cup for Apex is going on. Been watching mostly from Towa's team's perspective, her teammates being Selly from the CR group and Bora from Niji KR. They just got champion on the 3rd round and are placing 2nd overall, though this is despite Towa accidentally getting autofilled to Lifeline and their team not having a Gibralter on the 1st round. Towa and Bora cried after they won, and RAS from CR came to interview them after the win, to which Selly and Bora kept heckling him to get outta their call and Towa yelled Shut up! in Korean lmfao. Was funny as hell

Matsuri is also in the tourney, so is Chihiro from Niji JP with ShibuyaHAL and Sumire Kaga. I haven't checked the full list but I only saw Matsuri because she got downed twice in a row by Selly sniping her with a Kraber, which was pretty funny. Also I think Chihiro is a part of Niji JP's 1st round of talents? Not 100% sure but I only started watching her recently, and she only sounds like a Pokemon to me
